Hi all - Long time lurker, first time poster.
I'm looking at revamping my small-parts storage system - or rather, standardizing on a system in the first place! I want to bring order to the current chaotic mix of plastic drawers, bins, boxes, and bags. I plan to move as much of the small-parts inventory as possible to a set of those storage organizers with interchangeable plastic compartments of various sizes.
I've read all the threads and reviews I can find, but I'm still working on choosing which bins to buy. Obviously if I had Mythbuster-level money I'd make like Adam Savage and buy a hundred Sortimo cases, but that's not currently a realistic option!
However, the one thing I really do like about the Sortimo inserts is that they seem to be available in more shapes and sizes than almost any other manufacturer. In particular, they have some long narrow bins (the orange ones) that seem perfect for holding small quantities of fairly long bolts, which as it happens is a requirement for my shop. Most of the other storage case types would require me to use a more squarish insert to accommodate just a handful of long bolts, which would be less space-efficient.
So here's my question: Has anyone got any firsthand knowledge of any non-Sortimo organizer boxes that can accept the Sortimo plastic inserts? What I'm hoping to find is a more affordable Sortimo alternative with which I can use a few of the Sortimo inserts just for specific unusual sizes.
I think the answer is "yes" for the Bosch i-BOXX, since the Bosch inserts are literally made by Sortimo. The Bosch-branded boxes are a little cheaper than the Sortimo equivalent, but still somewhat pricey.
And I think the answer is "no" for the Allit boxes sold by Lee Valley and others, at least according to a thread I found. (can't post a link due to my post count here, but searching for "sortimo inserts allit" will find it on bethepro dot com.
Anyone know of any other combinations that might be compatible? I may end up ordering a handful of inserts and boxes just to do some test-fitting. Given the quantity I hope to wind up with, it might be worth the cost to do the experiment if it means I can find a cheaper non-Sortimo alternative.
Thanks!
