I have been reading the journal for about a month now and like so many others it's inspired me to get moving on the evolution of my garage. This is a newly built home so by design I started with a fair amount of space and due to an error by the concrete company a nicely finished floor. The first thing I built was the jumbo sized sliding door cabinets illustrated in an issue of Family Handyman. That got a lot of stuff off the floor and out of boxes so now I have some mental breathing room to continue with the next phase of the project which is building a set of cabinets along the west wall. These are basic face frame units built from poplar and MDF. They are hung 12 inches above the floor on a french cleat. Finding the right finish was a struggle but I finally settled on Rustoleum satin black. As much as I would like to be able to brush or roll the paint on it just doesn't give me what I'm looking for, so the final coat gets sprayed. My plan is to build cabinetry along the wall that will incorporate some bench top tools as well as provide covered storage for most of my stuff. I am just about finished with the next large cabinet (4X8 ft.) As others have done I will update as things move along.
