I have been reading the journal for about a month now and like so many others it's inspired me to get moving on the evolution of my garage. This is a newly built home so by design I started with a fair amount of space and due to an error by the concrete company a nicely finished floor. The first thing I built was the jumbo sized sliding door cabinets illustrated in an issue of Family Handyman. That got a lot of stuff off the floor and out of boxes so now I have some mental breathing room to continue with the next phase of the project which is building a set of cabinets along the west wall. These are basic face frame units built from poplar and MDF. They are hung 12 inches above the floor on a french cleat. Finding the right finish was a struggle but I finally settled on Rustoleum satin black. As much as I would like to be able to brush or roll the paint on it just doesn't give me what I'm looking for, so the final coat gets sprayed. My plan is to build cabinetry along the wall that will incorporate some bench top tools as well as provide covered storage for most of my stuff. I am just about finished with the next large cabinet (4X8 ft.) As others have done I will update as things move along.

It's looking good! Closed storage goes a long way toward reducing the visual chaos of the stuff we typically store (and use) in a garage.

It looks really good so far. What size is the garage? Looks like you have a deep garage with a truck parked in there and still room in front. I am working on mine right now and hope to have pics up soon. Good job and keep posting pics.

Got busy over the weekend and put up the very large and very heavy 4X8 foot cabinet. Glad to have an understanding wife as well as one with a strong back. With a minimal amount of discussion and some creative use of plastic milk crates we got it up on the wall. This is about as large a cabinet that I would build on the floor and try to hang, any larger and I think I would just build it in place (like the big sliding door cabinet). All in all the process is working out pretty well. MDF construction, inexpensive hinges (a pain to get the doors square), handles at just a buck a piece. The nice thing is they are very strong and you can load the shelves with a reasonable amount of weight and not have them sag. I also attached a drawing of where this is headed, a small plan but better than no plan.

They are basic face frame cabinets. 3/4 MDF for the box and doors, 1x2 hardwood for the frames. I will take some in process photos while I build the next one and post.
