I wouldn't update the first thread, just keep adding to the end of the thread. Most people that have already read this thread, will go to the end of it for updates, not back to the beginning.

Quick update, the yard is staked out, and they've come and cut up the sidewalk for removal. I'm expecting the footers to be poured any day now. Updated the first post with a more accurate layout diagram. I'll start posting pics when some real work begins.

If you do start other threads, remember to post the links under/ above yiur name at the bottom so others can reference the whole story.

Roger. Other threads will mainly be to get questions answered and final outcome documented here for others to follow. I'll put big highlights in the first post as I've found it hard to follow builds at times that span 50+ posts with all the comments and chatter between the action.

Re: New detached garage in the works

I'll post a couple of pics this weekend, but after an arduous battle with a nutty neighbor the building has commenced. It now looks like a bomb went off in my yard and the footers are dug. I expect concrete to be in them today if the weather holds.

Re: New detached garage in the works

Footers were poured. I've finalized lighting fixtures, bulbs, switches, and duplex plugs. I've sourced a pretty cheap place online for all the components but cross checking with the builder to see if their pricing is the same before going through the trouble of ordering myself. Doing black toggles and duplex plugs with stainless wall plates. Some toggles will be illuminated ON for various reasons, I'll get to that later.

Now researching insulation options to compare spray foam vs. standard roll insulation.

Re: New detached garage in the works

Not much of an update this week. Foundation block, concrete, and sand have all been delivered and are sitting in my driveway, but no other work was done. We had rain the past couple of days. I'm hoping the block will be installed Monday or Tuesday and then I'll actually be able to see some shape coming together.

Re: New detached garage in the works

Foundation started this week. I'm ready for them to get the debris and dirt cleared out and get some gravel and concrete in there so I can start to see it coming together.

After a three week delay due to some broken equipment and home closings the builder was working on they got moving again. I made a call to my Realtor who lit a massive fire under them and they got more done in a week than the entire time thus far. Keep these types of issues in mind when planning your project. It paid to have a Realtor in this case.

Concrete is supposed to be poured tomorrow. Upgraded to 4,000 psi ($150 total) and will be 4" thick everywhere but where the lift will be, which is 8".

Update 10/3/2015

Been a bit busy, so this will be a pretty big update.

Concrete poured (4,000 PSI 4" thick except where lift posts will be and that's 8")

Getting close.

Windows and line kit for mini split installed. I decided to upgrade to a mini split over a PTAC. It was a bit more money but will pay for itself in the short term with the MUCH higher efficiency. Thanks to those that recommended I check in to it as an option.

On the home stretch now.

Brick work is complete.

speedysgarage_30_38_web.jpg

As is the insulation (R-19 on the walls, R-38 on the ceiling, the rest will be blown in). Notice the compressor room is insulated to help with sound abatement. There is an exhaust fan in the ceiling if needed for heat control, but I doubt I'll have issues.

speedysgarage_30_39_web.jpg

They also caulked ALL seams in the frame on the interior.

speedysgarage_30_40_web.jpg

Low voltage is next for internet, satellite TV, and alarm system, then sheet rock which should be next week.

Went and picked out all the light fixtures today as well.

Place looks great Speedy. Really nice that your could due this as a new structure and match the house. I hope that my next house has a 3 car attached garage and room to add a shop. To me its the ideal layout. Looking forward to see the completion. Any plans for airlines?

The garage and house are beautiful. Hard enough to just get a nice garage built, even tougher to make it look like it fits and compliments the home. Every time I start to think about a detached garage that one point stops me. You've got to spend the serious bucks to achieve that look. Hats off!

Yes. I'm planning to run Rapid Air's "MaxLine" system for air around the shop with 3 outlets and a hose reel in the ceiling close to the lift for good measure.

Thanks. Aesthetics are just as important to me as function. When getting your quotes get several. I considered being my own contractor and hiring the work out, but got warned by several friends who work in the construction industry that there are a lot of pitfalls you have to really watch like insurance, etc which put me off. In the end I got four quotes for the complete job and think I came out very well for the work being done. The builder is the same that did the house and they do fantastic work. Surprisingly they were also the best price by 25% as well and have done several upgrades for me at no extra charge.

If it's not too late, read up a little on insulating the compressor closet for sound. I am not an expert but I know a little. The fiberglass will do almost nothing, it doesn't have enough density. There are many specialty materials that you can use but at this point, I think your best option would be to just have the drywall guys put two layers of 5/8 standard drywall with adhesive in between the layers on both the inside and outside face of the two closet walls.... ceiling too. I didn't look close at how your fan is mounted and ducted but be sure it doesn't become a megaphone.

A Quietrock sheetrock product is being used for the air compressor closet. It was delivered the other day and looks like two pieces glued together with some kind of sealer and the outside paper is a bit different from the normal stuff.

The gent came yesterday to run the rest of the low voltage for coax (satellite tv) and data cat6. He had to run the cables from the garage to the house then up in to the attic, and finally down in to the media closet where all the connections are located. He got it done and made it look a lot easier than I thought it would be.

However, when it came time to run the cables from the house to the garage there were problems that shouldn't have been there. Gray PVC pipes have been put in place to go from the house to the garage which is only about 7 feet or so apart. A big 3" pipe for all the electrical and a smaller 1" for the low voltage. He gets all that cable run through the house then finds the 1" pvc pipe is packed full of mortar from the brick work. It seems no one capped the pipe after it was run. He had to dig the pipe up (3 feet down) to get the elbow off and clear it. Got it done, but with the time change and the weather being nasty it wasn't a fun job. I ended up helping him finish up running the cables so he could get home at a reasonable time but a 2 hour job turned in to a 5 hour by the time it was all said and done. Amazes me that some foresight isn't used in these situations to put caps on any pipes until ready for use, or at the very least some duct tape to keep the clear. I wonder how much mortar is gonna be in the big 3" pipe for the main electrical lines.

With that over, sheetrock should be going in this week.

Is that some sort of special toilet set up like maybe a rear discharge? I've only ever seen them with the floor waste pipe needing to be centered 12" from the back wall. It looks like yours is closer to the wall ? Maybe it's just the angle.
I'm curious because I'm finishing my basement and my final plans made me wish I would have placed the waste pipe about 10 inches further north so I don't have to job a wall around it to create a 3' wide area that is 12" from the pipe.

Since the garage is below or the same level as the house plumbing I had to use a grinder pump on the toilet for waste water.

Quick update. They did 3 rounds of finishing on the sheetrock and got that knocked out. Trim guys came by and got all the trim/doors installed this week. Amazing how fast these guys can work and how good the work actually is. They showed up at 4pm and were done including clean up at 7pm.

Paint is next. I had planned to get some buddies to come over and paint it ourselves, but it's getting cold weather and close to the holidays so I'm taking quotes from pros now. Hope to have the paint done next week if I can get it scheduled. Shouldn't be long after that, final electrical, gutters, attic insulation, main door, and the final plumbing are what's left.

Nice build. i always tell people to make their garages at least 26' deep. but they never listen. Looks like you're making up for it now! Love the challenger! Im a MOPAR fan myself. I have an SRT8 Jeep, Dodge Ram, and a Jeep Wrangler.

Yep, bigger is certainly better. Once I learned I could get a variance to make it bigger on the property I made it as big as would fit and not look out of place next to the house. I wanted enough room to park a car or two near the door and still have a significant work shop area in the back. Should work out nice.

I love the Challenger. It's got a Arrington forged stroker motor (5.7 VVT based 6.0L) at 9:1 compression, **** crank, K1 rods, Mahle 2618 pistons, ARP bolts and studs, and Cometic gaskets. Slapped a Magnuson supercharger on top and makes a tick over 600 horsepower and 600 torque to the ground. It's a 6 speed manual with a McLeod clutch and RPM transmission and ran 10.85 at 128 a couple weeks ago in the 1/4 mile at Beach Bend Dragway. There are only 3-4 guys with 10 second Challengers that are 6 speeds. Seems everyone wants a boring manual LOL. I drive it to work a lot, and just take it out cruising. Drive it to the track and back home again. I love it. 18MPG city and about 23 or 24 HWY to boot.

Nice! Those VVT motors can make a ton of power. HHP is only a few miles from my house so I've seen a ton of their builds.

Mine is still the stock 6.1 with heads, cam, ported manifold, LTs, and full bolt ons. Its been 12.1@110 at a tick over 5,000lbs with only 500 miles on the setup. Haven't been back to the track since I dialed in the tune some more. It will eventually have a built trans, bottom end, and turbo setup after my shop and house are done.

My shifter is one thing that I'll say I REALLY do not care for on my car. It's a long, clunky throw and for some reason some of our cars (mine included) really does not like transitions to and from 2nd gear. I have thought about getting one of those Barton's but that's a lot of money for a shifter. Your car is amazing. I wish I had the time and money to do some of the things you've done to yours.

Thanks, it's a fun hobby and keeps me out of trouble, mostly, LOL

I have a Barton sitting on the work bench I plan to swap out over the winter. VERY nice piece.

You should plan to come to ChallengerFest in April next year. It will be our 7th year doing it and it's a blast. I'm the owner/promoter.

Got the paint work complete this week. After watching 4 professionals work on this for 3 days, I'm glad I hired it out. Cash is king, so keep that in mind when working with contractors if you want the hook up ;) I was shocked how inexpensive this was to get done and it looks fantastic. Took them SEVEN COATS on the red. I'd have gone nuts.

Primer coat (they then had to sand the walls smooth the next day)

speedysgarage_30_49_web.jpg

Paint finished. It has flat ceilings, eggshell walls same color as ceiling, satin for the gray including block, and semi gloss for the red.

speedysgarage_30_50_web.jpg

speedysgarage_30_51_web.jpg

They even carried the same scheme through to the bathroom and closet!

speedysgarage_30_52_web.jpg

I wanted the paint to give me a nice hot rod feel to keep me motivated and to make it enjoyable to be out in the garage and this is the ticket for me.

Electrical package was delivered as well and that's next a long with the garage door. Once that's done I'll have the HVAC mini split installed, diamond grind and epoxy the floor, attic insulation, and final plumbing. I think that's it! Probably 2 weeks out.
