Spindle Pulley, Craftsman 103.0305

Greetings,

I'm hoping someone can tell me why my spindle pulley is different than the pics and explanation I find here:

Well, apparently I can't post links. It's from FrankLee's helpful post entitled "The Classic Craftsman 100/150 Drill Press" and then down to "Spindle Pulley Assembly".

My machine is a 103.0305 - it says so on the plate on the base. I have the quill apart and find that the bearings there are Hoover 7202-10 instead of the 6202 I was expecting based on some reading here. This might matter to my spindle pulley problem.

The link above shows how to remove the spindle pulley, some retaining screws in the sides of the casting and a snap ring underneath that we are not to remove. Here's the question ... mine is entirely different. No retaining screws, no snap rings. Pics attached.

It looks like there are threads underneath the pulley but it's some kind of a coil spring.

What might be relevant is that the casting number on the head casting is 103-11407, while the PDF of the manual says it's supposed to be 11410.

So, hopefully that's coherent and the pics are the ones I meant to attach. I can do whatever other pics anyone would like to see.

Thanks for any help.

The King-Seeley 103.0305 is a predecessor to the King-Seeley Craftsman 100 series drill press. As you discovered, it is a completely different machine.

That coil spring is simply a spacer between the bearing and the head frame casting. It looks like the larger two steps are broken off your pulley. Remove those three screws from the pulley and it should pull off the bearing. IIRC, the bearing shaft is pressed into the head frame casting.

If the pulley does not easily pull off the bearing, use the largest wooden dowel possible that fits into the bearing shaft and gently tap off the pulley from the bottom.

I'm realizing that part of that pulley is broken off. Those 3 screws are just loose.

So, it sounds like that pulley should just pull off? Going to be a challenge to not break it, I suspect. It has the "flying head" that says Craftsman. I'll need to look for a "new" pulley.

Thanks for your response!

OK, it's pretty tight on there. I'm going to hold off on that part until I get a replacement pulley. If anyone sees this and knows of a source, I'd be grateful of a heads up. Meanwhile, it's off to the auction sites.

Do we know if the .0303 and .0305 pulleys are the same? Anything else that might work from a different machine?

Just to update this a little, I ran into a post mentioning a treadmill motor converted to drill press use and I'm going to do that so I can get my speed down while I look for a correct pulley. Something in me just wants an old machine like this to work the way it was designed. On the other hand, I have work to get done.

Well, here it is, in all it's glory. Running on a 1.5HP motor from an old Lifestyler treadmill I scrounged. I still need to make a control box of some kind for the board and wiring.

The only wrinkle was the motor shaft is 11/16". I just clamped it up in my vise, ran the motor and laid a file on it until it was 5/8".

Still a small rumble that I think is coming from the spindle pulley bearings but I'm not going to touch those until I have a replacement spindle pulley in hand.

I just acquired a 103.0305 and it has a very slight rumble in the front head pulley but I'm thinking it doesn't need a major repair. My main focus is getting the motor more vertical, like yours. Currently my belt rides across the top of the head.

I'm also missing my mohawk cover. Nice drill press though! If you replace the bearings please take photos and post a write-up!

I did the quill bearings, which was very easy. Lock the quill, twist the return spring handle a bit, back it out and let it unwind. Set the spring aside, unlock the quill lock and it'll drop out the bottom.

The spindle pulley bearings are up next once I find the spindle pulley. For now I've dripped oil into the little weep hole on top of the pulley and they're quiet enough.

Refer to FrankLee's epic thread on these drill presses for everything you possibly need to know at https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227480

Good luck with yours!
