Stihl Farm boss that stated it needed some tlc for $40. I asked if I could pick it up. I get an auto response the price had just increased to $60, and now it's $80.

Some people on FB marketplace are very odd.

I saw an early 90's Cutlass Supreme convertible on there awhile back, guy had an asking of $1500 and claimed to have the title. It was in "OK" condition but not great, but I love that body style and the convertibles are somewhat rare.

I sent him a message basically of "where are you located? I have the cash in my pocket and a trailer"

His response "well I've got a few other people asking, what is your bid?"

I stated "I'll give you the 1500 you're asking for it no questions asked"

He said "nah, this is an auction now"

That's been almost a year ago, the car is still being reposted, I sent him a message back in December and he stated that same thing, he wants a bid. So he's decided it's worth more than 1500 because he got a lot of interest but not a single person is entertaining his ******** about auctioning a 30+ year old, non-classic car that doesn't run.

Same thing happened to me with a douche selling a 66 Mustang 6 cyl convertible with the engine out.

I looked at it, made an offer and let him stew on it.

He called back the next day and accepted my offer. Called later that day to make arrangements to pay and pick it up with my trailer ( had to make sure the snow had melted enough to access the trailer)…crickets.

Most Facebook sellers are jerks.

I've occasionally made very high offers to those kind of ads and then never follow up when they contact me with dollar signs in their eyes.

Yeah, I can be an ******* too.
Seller: "I know what I got, I don't have to sell"
Bill: "I'll give you $100,000 for your 91 Firebird with no engine"
Seller: "SOLD you can come get it today!"
Bill: "nah"

It certainly predates Facebook.

Back around 1988 I had a 24' SeaRay Sundancer on a "borrowed" trailer (A bizarre long story for another time) and the owner needed the trailer back so i had to scramble for a new one. I found a used one in good condition not far from where we kept the boat. It was in a yard with a for sale sign on it. Me and a buddy stopped and talked to the owner (think the guy who sold Christine in that movie) and agreed on $900. A new trailer would have cost about $3,000 and since the boat sat on a trailer at the marina and the marina operators launched and retrived the boat for me I didn't need a new trailer. We shot over to the bank and I withdrew $1000. We got back and I pulled $900 out and the owner said, "It's $1,000". I started to argue, then saw the look on his face and said, "Oh, yeah, $1,000". Got him to sign a bill of sale, hitched up the trailer and took off. Annoying, but the only other available option was a new trailer and I still got decent trailer at a very good price.

I think this less indicative of FBMP in particular than our society at large.
There is way less honesty, decency, courtesy or humility than not so long ago. Draw your own conclusions as to why but its real and getting worse.

It's been like that for a long time. the internet makes it easier to deal with more assholes, and it makes it easier for assholes to find you.

I think everyone is an ahole these days. I've had buyers negotiate a price. Seemed like a decent person. Then show up and want to negotiate a lower price despite no issues with the item. I no longer meet like that.

And it goes both ways. About a decade ago I was looking for accessories for my new-to-me wheel horse garden tractor and found a set of wheel weights for $40. I went to look at them, tipped the first one up and saw the back side of one of them had a huge crack and the concrete was crumbling inside. He apologized, said he didn't know they were in that bad of condition and said I could just have them.

I filled the voids with fresh concrete, used several layers of construction adhesive to fill in the cracks and I'm still using them 10 years later.

I needed a large job box and found one on Marketplace. I said I would pay his price which was fair but not a spectacular deal. He said I could pick it up in a couple hours because he wasn't home.
So, driving over he messaged me saying he got another offer for $20 more. I said I would match it and was
about 15 minutes away. He agrees and then again he messaged me saying he got another $10.
I messaged him back saying I would give him $50 over his original price. He agreed and I then turned around and went home.
Twenty minutes later he messaged me asking when I would be there. I messaged back "Have a nice day".

Man, that would have pissed me off.

I think I would have led him on more than that.

On the other hand. . .

We had a large leather sectional sofa that just didn't work in this house so we finally decided to replace it. I took three pictures and put the thing on Craigslist two days ago for what I considered a fair price. I guess the buyer considered it a fair price as well since two hours later I had a buyer, and yesterday it was out the door. I helped them load it and protect it against damage in their pickup. They were happy, I was happy that I didn't have to drag it to Goodwill. I love win-wins.

I moved into the house I'm at in 2005, their is a guy that had a Jag XJS for sale in the neighborhood. He literally finally sold it last summer. I saw and add on facebook for it, he was asking something like $4k. It had been plated the whole time, he must have paid morin insurance than what he sole it for. Some people don't know when to cut their losses.

Most people on marketplace are idiots, scam artists, and dreamers. It can be tough to sort out. I'm not gonna lie, if you try to buy my junk and ask stupid questions, you are unlikely to get a response. Common courtesy goes a long way.

A few months ago I sold a project car on marketplace. It took a few weeks to sell but it sold for a bit below my asking price which I expected. Anyway a few months later the buyer has it up for sale for my original asking price. I'm not annoyed about that part as I'm sure he didn't buy it to resell and I got the money I wanted. What annoys me is I was clear about it's condition. He copied my ad and photos but removed the photos and details of the rust and badly installed floor.
