Spray foam regrets?

We sprayed our basement when we reno'd it. !00% would do it again. Great product, great result, air sealing was excellent. Reasonably priced. We're getting the other half of the basement done this year by the same folks.

Does anyone regret applying spray foam? Open or closed cell.

Any issues with trapped water or odor?

First hand or second hand stories welcome.


I’m a big fan of blown cellulose but I’m trying to keep an open mind.

The r values are tempting. But trapped water or chemical odors will be an issue.

I shop-built the canopy for my 1953 International R120. The canopy was custom built for an 8 foot box and an IHC only box width. I also made the canopy to match the taller height of the cab.
I live in a wet climate, so I inquired about spray insulation.
The company recommend to me had employed a bunch of jack-asses.
They totally filled the canopy with urea formaldehyde expanding foam then refused to give my canopy back until I paid what was double the agreed price, in cash. I did get revenge. When management became aware of my situation, they refunded the money I had paid and fired the jack-asses. I was left with two days of hand scraping the foam off. I went back to the RV repair shop that made the recommendation so they could be aware.

Not really related, but how does foam insulation compare for noise reduction, in terms of escaped noise outside the shop? I can’t help but guess it’s pretty good at that, keeping the neighbours happy.

Imo It’s great for wind, cars, kids. It seemed to do NOTHING for rain noise on the roof

My understanding is that closed cell will pass more sound, open cell will absorb more sound. Neither are designed as sound barriers.

My guys went bat sh*t crazy and covered them support brackets. That’s what, 12-14” to the peak?

I think the reality is that they buy this stuff in big drums and probably can't let a partial drum sit very long. This is my "guess" of why it's sometimes over-applied.

I'd never complain about "too much" but there IS a skill to shooting this stuff to get proper coverage and keep voids out of it, etc.

I lived in my foamed building for almost 2 years. 2" Closed cell and then several inches open cell sprayed direct to underside of metal roof. I thought it was reasonably quiet when we would have a downpour rain. Way quieter than the old metal roofed farmhouse I lived in for awhile as a kid. Wind noise was not noticeable.
