Spray Foam separating from panels?

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
I’ve always heard a little creep every now and then, but this is at awhole new level of loudness!

Also, today is the hottest day it’s been in Florida this year, about 93°.
My First full summer with spray foam, it was installed last year. Is this noise normal? Guessing it’s the metal contraction?
If the metal is “moving” any concern for the foam to dislodge from it?

Sounds like rain, but it’s sunny out.

I'm not sure of the interaction between the foam and the metal, but on my metal roofs on wood framing will pop an tick as the clouds come by temporarily shading the roof. This is in Maine!
Completely normal.

Interesting, I wonder what the coefficient of expansion is for the different materials. There's a reason why expansion joints or extra space is placed in construction.

Most sprayed foam insulations are not extremely rigid and will expand and contract elastically as steel moves from temperature change.

I expect that elasticity drops off with thickness though. The OP has around 13" of insulation at the peak that tapers off to around 3-1/2" on the walls. Unfortunately, that means that not only is the expansion rate different compared to the metal it's adhered to, it's different through the depth of the material AND throughout the building. The good news is that it may be thick enough to support itself.

Check out youtube, WatchJRGo. The episodes where he gets his garage spray foamed. And the problems after.

Another reason I've never been a fan of spray foam. Hope the noise is the only issue.

I watched his video last night.

He states his problem started approximately one month after the foam was installed. Mine has been up for an entire year. Plus he also has the foam going over wood whereas mine is going directly over metal.
Thankfully, I don’t have any separation or foam falling down….. as of now!

We have had the spray on foam on our metal garage/shop for over 2 years now without any issues. When it is warmer air temp & the sun is shining on the metal roof it does make some noise. Normal.

Open cell foam sprayed straight on R panel, no issues 4 years.
I have buddies with hangers and they've had foam applied to steel for more than a decade, no issues.
I get the sounds, but I'm not sure that's a foam issue.

I walk on the roof (which slightly deforms the panels with my weight) - foam handles it and "flexes" no problem.

A friend of mine has a 30x40x12 metal building that is insulated with foil-backed fiberglass matting. A few pops and creaks during the temperature changes, but nothing you'd even pay attention to.

Yours is a whole new level! I couldn't stand to be out there with that noise!

Sounds like rain or hail hitting a metal roof. Definitely strange hope you get it figured out. The neighbors would hate me having the stereo up that loud trying to drown that out.

I might believe that the metal tubing would "grab" the screws tighter than wood causing a louder release of the *panels during expansion and contraction, but there's a proper "squish" of the washer installing the screws and it's the same regardless of the material being screwed into.
It's a long shot but maybe the guys that put it together for you overtightened them.
* more stored energy with less frequent releases as wood.

I didn't answer your direct question, 🤔 it is similar but the only time is during full summer sunshine and a passing cloud. Once the metal is equalized with the heat or shadow it's nothing like that. It's never bothered me because it's just a fact of the material reacting to the changing temperature that's part of its characteristics. I've been around farm buildings and sheds with this material forever and expect it and actually don't hear it, kinda like someone who lives next to a busy road.👍

I had the exact same experience. Closed cell 2" directly sprayed to underside of metal roof. The next week it creaked, popped, and groaned as it popped off the spray foam when the sun hit the roof. Its now completely separated from the foam minus some spots around the edges. It's still up there and seems to be ok, but I would never spray directly to metal again.

Your foam popped off the underside of the roof, and it’s still hanging on?

Can you see up the roof between the foam and roof metal? How do you know it has popped off?
I expanded my building and was able to easily lift the R panels up to slide my flashing up under. Further inspection at the ridge was the same way, and I can tell it separated in between by pressing on the foam until it contacts the metal roof.
