12 point sockets smaller than 9/16 or so are too easy to break, so at some point they stop putting them in the kit, or at least many brands do.

^ this. I've seen all kinds of socket sets listed on Ebay where the little ones are 6-points and the larger ones are 12-points - 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive - all kinds of brands. doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary.

8x9-1/4x22 box. Drippy black over original red. Pitting under the paint. No tray, one tray support tab broken off and gone. Got it along with a Grumbacher artist box full of pastels, palette and two palette knives for $14.

Update - Here's a Union box that is VERY similar to the Bonney. I think the differences (handle, etc) have more to do with manufacture dates. This didn't have a tote tray, either, or I would have bought it.

^ if you want to unload the pastels send 'em my way! ;)

the old Grumbachers were great - good pigments.

One of my daughters is majoring in fine art. The wood box (eBay sellers are calling this "dovetailed," but it's boxjointed) is Grumbacher; the pastels are Weber Costello.

I found this Bonney socket, an A40 12-pt 1-1/4" 1/2"-drive, stamped "USA", at a nearby estate sale in a tray of picked over rusty tools and hardware.

Any ideas of the age of this guy?

This Stillson wrench cost me $0.25 yesterday. Bonney Allentown PA Made in USA.
The wood handle was "repaired" with a mile of cloth electricians' tape. Under that was a simple straight crack down opposite sides. I superglued it and got the black tape goo off with mineral spirits, which revealed the original finish to be black shellac, missing a bit. So I wiped that off with alcohol and recoated with dissolved 78rpm phonograph records. I will topcoat with clear shellac.
Meanwhile, the steel needs a rust removal.
I'll post "after" pics when I get er done.

What ?

I've worked with wood 50+ years and never heard of the 78rpm record thing. Can you explain it more ? Show something done with it ?

This was in a box I bought today, neat little DOE. I usually don't see them in this good of condition around here.

Cool wrench Sam. I don't suppose the want ads get much attention so I'm going to post this here. I need the #21 wrench in that exact style to finish my board. Anyone willing to part with one?

After reading this thread I had to check to see if I had any of those in a oddball drawer of wrenches. Need either of these two?

I gotta take a peek in the box of rusty DOEs I have, I think there is some Bonney in there. I keep picking them up for cheap and tossing them in the box.

I do check the want adds, but I never seem to have anything anyone needs. I need to post a want ad myself.

Flea market finds today, ratchet seemed to work before I bought, but it was jammed when I got it home!?!?. Any advice before I pull it apart? I have never owned a Bonney ratchet before.

Nice haul, Sam!

before disassembling, try soaking the ratchet in a 50.50 solution of acetone and automatic transmission fluid. Let it soak for at least a couple of days. Might just be an accumulation of old grease and dirt - the 50'50 soak might just free it up.

Ok cool, I'm gonna try a soak first, no point in pulling it apart if I don't have to. Vender that I got it from has a lot of Bonney, but most of it is mixed sets, and most of it looks like looks like pre-loc rite stuff.

I scored a handful of nice Bonney wrenches from a few different vendors this weekend. About a buck a piece on these guys. :rocker:

Bonney from the flea market today!

Box has been modified, but it had a bunch of craftsman sockets in it to justify the price. The two wrenches came in another box I bought, mostly because of the 1" outline wrench.

Nice group!
The chrome on the smaller Hex-Fit DOE looks pristine, while the bigger one looks like pit city.:shocking:
Must have been different locations.

Yeah, different vendors. Gotta save em all! :3gears:
The chrome on the small Hex-Fit feels like silk... so smooth.

There's something about Bonney chrome that just makes it stand out to me. In a pile of wrenches, I can usually spot a Bonney (or another brand that had Bonney make tools for them) simply by the quality of the chrome. Not mirror-like as you would find on a Snap-On or S-K. More of a gray quality to it - very distinctive.

After a week of internal debate bought two carbon steel wrenches, fully finished. W35 & W79D. I'm wondering if to term them NOS, despite the chips and rust, because the gullets still have paint in them (not used). What do you think?
The big guy is 1926 (CS), and from the similar finish, I think the bent guy is too, though the paint obscures the code. The sizes are the old-style bolt diameter, rather than the across-flats measurement. (I put a newer wrench with the "same" fraction on each to show the difference.) Embedded-shield logo on each.

Edit: after a year-and-a-half's education, and new glasses, I realize these are British Whitworth wrenches, and the date code on the S-shaped wrench might be GR or possibly GQ. Now I imagine a British import being maintained with these.
