Sad story...

I did the 127 sale today, for those of you it starts from Michigan and runs down to Georgia and believe it or not the very first stop I found a guy selling the most tools I have ever seen in my life just amazing. I did not think about taking pictures as I was so busy going ape **** thinking about all the tools I could buy. Short story several men were looking at me while I took a handful of tools including bonney over to the guy running the show. Well he takes a look and said that will be $160.00 dollars and my jaw hit the ground...

The men all looking dropped all their tools and all walked away just shaking their heads. I told the man $60.00 was a very fair price and his jaw hit the ground so I walked away also. Sometimes you win and sometimes you walk away.

Bummer, Woody.
I did okay today with Bonney. Six 1/2dr sockets I didn’t previously own. (I’ll update with closeups when I get them cleaned up.) The seller had two fairly-full carry boxes mostly Craftsman and SK. “$45” he says. I asked if he’d sell items separately. “They’ll be more expensive that way.” Yeah, I get it. So we chatted tools for a bit while I picked through the sockets. He invited me to make an offer. Now, if I were in a thrift store, I’d expect to pay $1ea for deep USA, $.50ea for 1/2” and up, $.25 for smaller. I’m at a flea market, where vendors often hawk a bucket of sockets for a couple bucks, but I offer $2. There’s a silence, and I realize he’s staring at me. I freeze my face and hold eye contact; I don’t want him misinterpreting anything. These aren’t gold, but I do want them. “No, $5.” I frown. Of course, on eBay, you see Bonney anything for ridiculous prices, but these are really just some old sockets, after all.
Maybe I looked like I was going to walk, but before I could frame a response, he says, “$4.” Okay. After all, the difference is just $2, and two of the sockets are straight out of the Land Before Time. I hand him the cash and scoop up my sockets. Weird. I didn’t think I was lowballing at $2, and it wasn’t cherrypicking, either. There was plenty of good USA stuff to keep asking $45. Whatever.
I got a 1/4” C1 chisel for almost nothing from another vendor, and a Triangle-era screwdriver and two DOEs for $3. I really shouldn’t have bought the Zenel (I have two identical ones already), but I guess I still have a soft spot for the wrenches that got me interested in Bonney.
Now, I also had this complete Herbrand Triangle-era socket set offered to me at $5, but I declined, because 1.I don’t collect Herbrand, 2.every piece, including the box, was engraved “Paul Ruch,” which isn’t anywhere close to my name, or anyone I know.
I guess, though, engraving every piece worked out for Mr Ruch, because they were all still there.
I also bought an old P3 screwdriver. The stamping is very light, and for a moment, I saw “NNEY” so I thought maybe someone removed the burgundy, and clear-coated it? but no, “2703” is a “[STA]NLEY” model number, and it was always a clear finish. Nice, though.
The big item, though, was a shield-shaped back board from a head mount (where’s the head? no idea). 23-1/4x43-3/8” Solid oak, though they didn’t bookmatch the pieces. Visions of Bonney wrenches or hammers hanging on it danced through my head. “How much for the rhino plaque?” $20. Ugg. I poked around through some other stuff, while another shopper asked, was told, and walked away. I said, “will you take $10?” No. We chatted. I pointed out the glue had failed, and he said he had some bar clamps on his truck. Mmm. Then he said $15. “Alright.” So now I have a new repair/refinish project. And I will need all my willpower and creative vision to put ugly holes in it for L-hooks, instead of turning it into a coffee table, as he (and later, surprisingly, MrsLS) suggested.

Hunted the 127 sale from Liberty KY down to Crossville TN yesterday.
Got a bushel of keepers at real reasonable prices.
Have had pretty good success over the years.
My favorite 'picker' hunt of the year.

Idle curiosity led me today to discover that Charles S Bonney’s grand-daughter, Nellie Rapp, married Ernest Vehslage. I have been ignoring the Bonney-Vehslage ticket punches on eBay, thinking the company name was a coincidence. Now I don’t think so.
Edit - elsewhere in this thread Lugz credits Twertsy for pointing out the B-V connection. He cited a specific post number, but now I can’t find it. So, non-news.

Yes. Sadly, those accounts are on my site. BV manufactured Bonney patented items, after his Iowa vise company failed.

Oh yeah, sweet! I'd restore that thing and install a butcher block top on it - use it in my garage for car repairs.

Alright, I just went over every inch of this thing. I don’t see anything when it comes to date, manufacturer, even a secondary place that says Bonney other than the sticker. No wonder there isn’t many at all, if you don’t know it’s a Bonney, neither does anyone else!

The stickers peeling pretty well. But for anyone hunting, that indent is there where the sticker should be.

About the best photo I can get of the original colors. The whole outside of the body was done with the wrinkle finish red, while the drawers were a gloss red.

Who made it? That’s the big question. But it looks so damned close to my early 50’s 3 drawer craftsman’s I’m willing to bet it was that company. From the way the cover is designed, there’s a missing handle on the side that looks almost exactly like the Craftsman’s (he has it on his other one, just plain 1/4” steel rounded around). Down to even the supports on the bottom, I’m pretty sure the Craftsman one is set up that way too.

Either way. Time to find a top!

:drool: that roller... man, nice find. Did you bring home both of them?

I found a handful of Bonney wrenches at the flea today.
The 1-1/4" is massive. I was missing it so, a nice find for me.
19MM locrite :) 9/16" short pattern locrite combo and the Bonaloy 1165 (a duplicate for me).

Went pawn shopping today and found a couple wrenches. A P/N 1172 a 1 1/8" combination wrench and a P/N 23720 5/8" wrench in satin and does have the owners mark on it. I don't tend to use the satin wrenches and prefer to just sell them to fellow collectors.

Good find, Sam!

Metric Bonney's in good condition aren't easy to find. Although the combos are a bit more common than say the DBE's and the angle wrenches.

Stay frosty!

I had a SK spring clamp pliers that a coworker borrowed 20 years ago and he got fired and took it when he left.

Interesting, I have a General USA magnetic pickup tool that looks related. I'd bet General made them for Bonney.

Say, is that socket looking thing in the upper right corner a schrader valve thread chaser, Dave?

I believe it is a wing nut socket, BM. The outside is knurled, and has slots cut in it. The inside just looks like a drilled hole. It is 1/4 drive, with a thru hole for detent, and is unmarked.
