SQC's 30X40 Work Shop

I moved to this property a little over a year ago with building this workshop in mind. I'm happy to say its coming to reality finally. I wanted to put in a 2 post lift so 12 ft ceiling was on the agenda but was not looking possible till the building codes got changed this summer. The building is going to be a kind of hybrid. It will be pole built with metal exterior for the sides and back. The front will be built to match the house with traditional stud frame and stucco exterior to satisfy the city. I think its gonna look pretty good too.


This is the location for the building. The yard measures 110 by 95 ft.

Starting to level the ground.

My buddy Arthur, My 6yr son (photographer) and I (wearing beanie) Dug the front wall footing after the builder marked where they wanted it. They were not equipped for this part so I jumped in.

The holes for the poles are dug and mini foundations near by.

Pretty cool idea building a pole barn with stucco on the front, I've been lurking on this site looking for ideas for my up coming build I want a pole barn but I am in the same situation of needing it to match the house, I may steal this idea!

Tbyrd13 - 10 wide by 11 high. I'm hoping my winnebago fits.

The metal sided walls are up, Truss is in, I have a door now. Its getting really exciting now.

Don't you love the natural lighting. haha.

Playing with different layouts. I did all the cut outs to scale. I looked up the dimensions of the cars on edmunds and wiki. I work on a lot of imports so most of the cars in the garage will be smaller. I have a 62 galaxie 500 which is the biggest car that will be in here.

On that note here are some of the toys going in the garage once its done.

My shop is 30x40 as well. My office area is 10x16. Are you planning a lift ? I'm hoping for the best for ya but I'm thinking about what I can fit in my own shop and I think 6 cars is going to be VERY tight. Mine has 2 10x10 doors on the long side but I can "maybe" get 5 in there is I did some really creative shuffling around and then there wouldn't be room to actually work on anything. 6 if I put something up on the lift and another car under it. I agree 6 cars would be a tight squeeze. 4 or 5 cars and still be able to work on them. I love your garage. That is where the idea for an office came from.

I'm curious why you poured a footer and framed a wall for the front to stucco?
Could you have just framed in between the poles and still went with stucco?
I'm not knocking, just learning.

It was done that why to satisfy the city's requirements. It took a couple revisions to get approved.

Great Datsun. My dad had a Datsun hatchback the same color. I learned to drive with it (once I got the stick shift figued out).

Tbyrd13 - 2 reasons come to mind. Integrating the front wall which had to match the house construction and adding a office inside. I think wood is going to be easier to insulate and drywall when I get to that point.

synik - not currently. I thought about adding some windows but build cost were spiraling so I cut back. - I Just check out your link in your sig. Nice setup, How have you been Kenny. What area of town is that?

sarge244 - 9.52 @ 147 so far. hoping for 8's once I get this next version finished.

As for the garage no exciting updates yet. The most resent inspection pass and now I'm waiting on the stucco guys to do there thing this week.

Its been slow progress since my last post. The stucco guys finally came out and put some lathe up and it passed inspection. Next week it should get the stucco and garaged door.

Sorry I have been slacking on the updates so here is a good one.

The first coat of the stucco went on and then it snowed. Its been warm for a month before this hit. funny how that works.

Fast forward a week and we have the stucco all done now and the roll up door is now installed

Going to need some garage door triming to protect the door and help it seal a little better.

This is how the stucco meets the metal siding.

Roof Trim is now in place and garage door trim is on now too.

I'm going to have to seal up the top of the roll up door some how to keep the heat in.

I wish I had taken before pictures but the old exterior breaker box has been removed and the stucco guys were nice enough to patch it up for me. The new 200amp panel is now located inside and a ready for the wires to be run out to the work shop.

That is where am at so far. I have a trench to dig this weekend and then we can start running power in the work shop.

Thanks everyone. I do want to add some exterior lights. Haven't decide on what yet. I got half way threw digging the trench for electrical yesterday.
