Excellent find, cosmik!

it has been such a loooooong quest, i'm glad it's almost over now...
too bad i'm now alone to do the restoration, we should have been doing it together like we did with the Rollbox: there was not much to do except cleaning it thoroughly, replacing a couple rivets, straightening some lips and adding a red handle and some Ikea liners but we did it together. and she liked to use it for her own tools... :(

By the way, you have the best avatar on the Garage Journal.
don't you mean "of the Whole World of the Internet Webs"??? :D

me like it too, eh!

These things remind me of the Isetta bubble car. They are quirky and I wonder if Europeans find them quaint or embarassing....? I always thougtht the Isetta was a response to the tough post war years in Europe. I wonder if Americans really understand how bad things were for Europe after WW2 and why things like this, the Isetta, 2CV, beetle, were necessary.

These little carts seem well suited to the tiny European garages I have seen. They also seem to be designed for guys working on creepers as they are readily accessible from the floor. Our US equivalent is the service cart which is really designed for a standing worker with the car on a lift. And like all things American, our humble 2 drawer service carts have gotten bigger and bigger (almost to the detriment of their function).

I think these little boxes are attractive and should be very appropriate for those of us without lifts working on the floor. But I can see how Americans may not want one (unless they are really into euro stuff).

BTW, I think some people in the UK feel like every American has a 53" KRL in their 3 car garage.

these carts are things of the past were you didn´t need many tools...
But even nowadays they can be useful....if your hobby is wrenching on Beetles e.g....How many tools do you need ?

SO jealous. If I could stay off the tool trucks long enough I'd love to have that, or the Hazet one. I think I like the looks of this one more.

I think these are neat, but I don't think they have quite the versatility of a Assistent in the way that you have to swing out the bins to access the tools. In a tight space you have to be then concerned with bumping and scratching. The beauty of the Assistent's IMHO is that they are light and small enough to flick around and have no drawers or the like to bump into your work, commonly a vehicle.

I agree. They're cool for sure but why not just buy a regular rolling cabinet? Seems like you're losing a decent amount of space too as the drawers dont extend the full width of the roller.

I dont think the Assistent is really comparable here. Its clearly meant to be portable, where as this seems to be meant just to be mobile but in a single location.

Hi,

Newbie here. Just picked up a Rollmaster and am going to restore it. Covered with stickers, several dents and glued-in rubber, cheesy toolbox liners in the drawers. Some rust on the edges, where paint is worn/peeling, so sandblast prep.
Rollmaster1_zpstq8pjqst.jpg

Rollmaster2_zps6djj2pfl.jpg

I'm thinking Hammertone Powder Coat - for ease of coverage (nooks & crannies in bottom compartment).
I, too, would like to "activate" the fixed, middle tray. I've already taken the thing apart (you have to "spring" the posts, to free the middle one).
Does anyone know how to remove the hasp, which appears to be pressed into the locking bar? It appears to have splines pressed into it for tension in the bar. ViseGrip-Slidehammer?
Also, I'm missing 1 red bakelite knob that you grab to swing the tray open (might need 3 total - if I get the center tray swinging.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I purchased one of these recently also, mine's a bit rustier than yours but seems to be dent free and the wheels are like new so don't think it's been used much. I removed the hasp with my knipex cobras, however I broke the tab off in the process so will need to tig it back on. I intend to 'activate' the fixed tray also but that will come later.

I just got back from the local powder coaters, they said they wont be able to match the colour, which is why I am here... I presume there are a few people on here that have restored a rollmaster, if so, does anyone know what the colours are that they used and how close they were to the original? Also where to get them from? I guess I'll have to buy the powder and get my local guy to spray it for me.

I am also curious as to when they changed the stahlwille logo on the rollmaster, each of the attached images are different... Mine is the last one, on it's side.

Cheers,
Jacob

Jacob,
Did you twist or pull the hasp (straight) out?
I looked at some PC colors online & it looks like some are pretty close. If I find matching colors, I'll post the names here.

Thanks,
Chris

Took a bit of both, twisting and pulling, but I wasn't delicate, it was pretty ****** tight.

Choice that'd be great regarding the powder. I'll have a look around also, I have found a company that has a colour and finish very similar to Stahlwille's socket set boxes of the 80's/90's but they're quite different to the rollmaster, I guess that's a sign of age.

Rollmaster in use at Porsche in 1972

Porsche 1 picture is an Mercedes 350SL being used for testing of the 928 trans-axle, in the picture it has it original Merc engine, but it was later swapped to the 928 V8.

Porsche 2 picture is an Opel Admiral being rebuild to fit a 928 suspension for testing.

All the Rollmaster are red, also look at the racing cars at the back.

The pictures are from the book "Project 928"

Hate to dig up an old thread for a silly question, but does anyone know how the flip down shelf on these secures in the upright position? I can't make out the latch (or whatever) on the one in the center pic. I got one of these recently and it has the holes for the shelf to mount, but no shelf. Thinking I'll fab one up, but would like to get the details right if I can (operation, dimensions, etc.). Any help would be much appreciated.
