Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a cheap tread covers for stairs in my garage? I'm likely going w/ Race Deck and hate to have the raw wood steps afterward. I'm having trouble finding a homeowner level product. The commercial grade stuff is crazy expensive.

Thanks

I'm not sure if I understand what you are looking for, but here goes anyway.
I found cheap stair tread covers at Ace Hardware. They are basically a plastic tread which I used on my wood finished basement steps. It provides a good means of traction on my polyurethane steps and prevents slips and falls on the stairs.
I hope this helps!

Just a simple stair tread cover. Here is a link to better illustrate.

These seem to go for $70 each which is crazy IMO.

Sorry for the thread necro. I was just doing a routine check into where our traffic was coming from and saw this topic here was sending some traffic our way at FloorMat Store, I just wanted to say thank you and offer a 5% discount on materials for anyone who mentions this post when they place an order.

That #375 tread that pattenp had linked to is the ideal tread for that application. One bonus (beyond the low cost) is that vinyl treads hold up better to changing temperatures that a garage would see, in comparison to a standard rubber tread like the #800 (which still works great, but falls victim to expanding/shrinking much easier). If budget allows, and you prefer the look of rubber over the vinyl, consider going with the #633 tread. It's made of recycled bus and truck tires instead of a rubber/clay composite, so it's practically indestructible.

Feel free to shoot us an email with any questions you might have: [email protected]
That 5% discount won't expire, by the way... so if you're ever in need of treads, flooring or wall protection products, feel free to take full advantage of it!

If you want inexpensive - I picked these up at Menards for about $5/ea. They are softer rubber and have great traction. I've used the other thinner, harder plastic stuff and is slick as heck when your shoes are wet.

I painted my stairs with a porch and floor paint. It's pretty durable and cleans up easily.

One thing I noticed is that the tread style I have is really easy to clean. Those others with "nibs" are harder to keep clean of rocks and mud and such.

I ran into the same problem when I built my garage loft stairs. I found treads at about $15 each at Lowes and because I didn't need the full width was able to cut them in half and make one good for two treads. That's why in the picture below every other one has the yellow safety stripe. They have a sandpaper consistency and a peel and stick backing.

I can't get the picture to transfer, so here's the link to my stair project.
