All my sockets are on the metal clip rails. since my box never moves they never fall over. this way I can grab the whole rail and take it if needed. laying them down would take way too much room... IMO.

Huh?

If a drawer is deep enough for the sockets to stand... then that'll be the most efficient way to store them. Now whether you like it, is another.

Mine are on their sides on metal rails, set up so the sizes face up. I'm using an old craftsman box and cut down Harbor freight rails so they fit in front-to-back. Deep wells were too tall to stand up, so they all got laid over on their side. Honestly, I don't think the drawers could take too much more weight, so the use of space is not a concern.
The drawer with the 1/2" sockets especially has a lot of load, with deep and shallow, metric and sae, and impact and chrome, torx and hex too.

Nope, that handle is a real space waster. You just can't beat the narrow footprint rails offer when standing sockets upright. You may need a different box or cart though. Something with a deep till or drawer.
Mind you I'm not talking about those stupid Hansen racks or any tray type holder as those don't allow you to tailor your set to your needs and the bases eat up a lot of space.

Dont get what you mean?

If i layed all these down i would need 2 draws

Yup, but if you have shallow drawers, deepwells don't stand up (not if you want to close the drawer anyways)
A nice, big toolbox doesn't have that issue, but, work with what you got until you can afford better.

I bought a entire set of those lisle holders. They didn't work for me two reasons. They didn't hold all the sockets for an expanded set and I had to stack them which after a while got aggravating as hell. I still have the expensive little collection but use them when I set up a road box the few times a year I need too.

Buy flat magnetic plates. You can cram as many sockets as you want on them.

It sounds the like drawer youre using isnt deep enough. I have a similar setup to colin39, except i use pin style socket holders like this :

The pins are tall enough that i can fit 2 of each socket on each pin. Im really forgetful, and if im doing a large job, ill misplace the socket im using, so ill just go back in the drawer and grab another one thats identical from the same location. Keep in mind that mine are all metric, not SAE, as i work for honda.

BUT OP isn't complaining about drawer depth, he's complaining about stand up sockets taking up too much room.

Look up "Mechanics Time Savers". They make a ton of magnetic stand up onces, maybe you would like that style better than the hansen trays.

I'm not really sure what he means unless he doesn't have a drawer that's deep enough to stank deep well sockets up?
I use Ernst socket rails. They work out best for me.
My drawer isn't exactly like this anymore, it's close though and the most recent photo I have.

I'm with Colin and Tech on this one. If you have the drawer depth and your looking for max space then the only way is standing them upright.

KM223, are those hansen trays you have? If so, how do your sockets fit on the pegs drive side down?

I'm with others, or I am missing something, standing them up takes up way less space than lying them down. I would need three drawers vs. my one if I laid they down.

What am I missing about the question?

Most of the replies seem to assume the drawers are sufficient depth for upright socket organizers.

I agree completely, lying them down takes up significantly more space. When I organized my box with vertical organizers I saved two extra drawers!

It's irrelevant to the ops question. The most efficient way to store sockets is vertically, not laying down. Op didn't say anything about drawer choice, only about space and orientation.
If sockets wouldn't for in his drawer vertically how would the question even make sense?

I tried a Lisle lay down mag thing too...hated it immediately. Doesn't hold enough sockets, weak magnets for 1/2 drive, had to lay other thing on top of it so constantly fishing it out when I needed the socket, handle...and all the sockets on it fit on a single mag rail in less than 1/4 space vertically.

If drawer depth will be an issue look at snap on trays from older sets on eBay or custom foam inserts if you can afford

Best place for sockets imo are top drawer of box and top compartment of rollcart where all are vertical for space saving
