Stanley sockets--Chinesium?

These came in a batch I bought yesterday:



12, 13, 14, 15, 19mm, with the odd man out being 9/16".

Chineseium or not? No USA stamp, laser-engraved (or etched).

Stanley sockets have been Chinese made for the past few decades.

Yeah they have been Chinese for awhile. Moved from USA to Taiwan and then China. Doesn’t look like there is much QC with those rusted ones.

Dirt, actually. I think these are going into the "free" pile for the next YS.

I believe those are Taiwan made Stanley. Stanley also made some really nice long pattern combination wrenches around the same time with the same type of size markings, the size in a box.

For many purposes, 14 MM and 9/16 wrenches are interchangeable.

Seeing as there's a 14mm in the bunch, and no 16mm, I'd be more expecting to see a 5/8" if that (cognates) were the reason.

Most likely, these are just the remnants of a full Metric/SAE set.

Stanley has been doing this since the mid 1980's, hell they got the craftsman contact and in 85 they were producing craftsman sockets in China, that is until they got caught by the us government. It's all about the Benjamin's with the Stanley group and I suspect all the other companies also.

To tell you the honest truth if snap- on could get away with it I am sure they would try it. Think about it instead of paying $150.00 for a Snap-On ratchet, let the Chinese make it for $2.00 and then sell it for the full retail Snap-On markup; the profit potential would be staggering.

Stanley made in USA but not sockets. Friday I ordered metric socket head cap screws from McMaster-Carr, delivered yesterday. Opened the package, green box, assumed Hillman but it wasn't. Looked at the manufacturer and COO, it was Stanley made in USA, was very suprised.

IIRC, Stanley bought out a US SHCS manufacturer years ago; maybe Camcar?

Those are Stanley Max-drive sockets, aka off corner engagement sockets. Made in china if i remember correctly, not a bad socket.

Other than a few American manufacturers who early on were marking their tools with such monikers as "Chromium Vanadium" (and other variants thereof), I cannot think of an American-made socket or ratchet or other drive tool marked either with "Chrome Vanadium" (or any of the other variants listed above) manufactured during the last four decades.

Rather, those markings seem to be limited to offshore manufacturers on product produced over the last three or four decades, Very common among items imported from Taiwan, mainland China, and Japan are: "CR/V" and "C/V" - the tools generally showing no other marks other than the size stamping.

(Most of this stuff immediately goes out to the curb here. A couple examples pulled from a batch of stuff recently acquired below.)
