So this is my first post here and I tend to make these long, so, buckle up.

1st, my name's Marshall, I'm 15, I love anything that moves. I've always been interested in cars, ATVs, dirtbikes, and you know the rest.

I've been lurking here for a month or two but decided I wouldn't post until I have a decent collection of tools. Well to start, I received this for Christmas.
421.jpg

I like it. A lot. But who is ever satisfied? So last night (1/1/10), when I did my very common CL search, I stumbled upon something and jumped. It said "3 drawer tool box, stocked with tools. Wrenches, Pliers, some sockets. $40 Call *******" So figuring it couldn't hurt I called and set up a time and place to meet this guy. He also asked me if I was short on sockets, as he has a coffee can full of them that he doesn't need, $10. So today (1/2/10), I meet him and take a peek at the "merch". Was initially greeted with this.
413.jpg

Not what I had in mind but whatever. Beggers can't be choosers. Then I see the coffee can. Filled to the rim with sockets. I figure it has to be junk sockets. I pull out a few. Taiwan, Taiwan, Taiwan, Snap-On. Wait.. what? So from there that was sold. So I end up taking both for $40. Not too shabby.
414.jpg

415.jpg

These are only sockets from the can, and only QUALITY sockets.
419.jpg

These are the rest. Unmarked, Taiwan, Unmarked Japans. Still half full
420.jpg

Lots of Craftsman, old and new. Fair amount of Kobalt. One SK. One Cresent. 3 Snap-On. One old Husky. Tons more I'm forgetting. Will be posting them later with questions. An entire set of Klein Nut Drivers. Let me tell you I love Klein tools. I've worked in a family operated electrical contracting business:shocking: for a few years now and have always had Klein in my pouch. I love them. Did I mention I love them?

Anyways. Came with a few Craftsman screwdrivers, mostly junk though. This one screwdriver like tool that I have no idea what it is. Again, I'll be posting that when I have more time.

So overall, I'm happy. Definitely have more than $40 worth in sockets alone, so I think I made out like a bandit. That's it. Told you it'd be long.
Later

Congratulations, and remember that the engine on your dad's snow blower that sits around all summer doing nothing can also be used to power a go-kart.

Those taiwan sockets are still worth the money. Good for throwaway jobs, car boxes, or the odd one that is the exact perfect size for a job that the other truck brands have trouble fitting.

Some of the tools I reach for first are the off-shore brands, simply because they do the job better than anything else I've found.

Yeah I'm not just going to through them away. Keep as a last resort or something..

I didn't do a very in depth search but what's the deal with Japanese brands? In other hobbies and such I'm into the Japanese make very nice things. Is this true for tools? Certain brands I should look out for?

You seem awfully snobby towards anything Craftsman or non Snap-On, MAC, SK etc. My whole set is craftsman and i have been using them for YEARS. Ive done everything you can on my car besides a engine swap, and my craftsman tools have never let me down. You are only 15, so you have a while before you decided if you will be using tools as a way to make money. Untill that point in time, dont worry about brand name so much. Most all tools will get the job done.

Nice find on that box of tools! I have been searching my craigslist and everything is over priced.

To follow on; Save the "tool queen" stuff till your mechanical ability has paid for your house. I've built a bunch of stuff with tools that didn't even have names on them. The street, dyno, farm or race track was never the wiser.

I will tell you that C-man sockets are decent, I used them professionally for a very long time. That being said, there is a difference. Tighter tolerances, thinner walls and stronger alloys.

As a 15 year old, unless you find awesome deals on better sockets, stick to the craftsmans. There are a lot of other tools that you will need before you upgrade. If anything get better ratchets, the C-mans are terrible.
Welcome aboard Marshall you will learn an awful lot here... It is a wonderful website. Don't be embarrassed to ask any questions, we were all new at one point. And besides I am sure you could teach us something as well.

if you think a craftsman ratchet is terrible, use one of the no name china ones where the whole center comes out and you have to hold it in place with one hand while ratcheting with another lol! i do like my snap ons more, but the craftsmans are decent

To the people you said I was "snobby".... I don't think I was being snobby at all. I clearly stated that I really liked my Craftsmen tool set. I have no idea where I came off as snobby, but don't be so quick to attack people. I'm here to learn and share with others what I have, not to impress or gloat.

And thank you for the warm welcome from everyone else.

Hi, I'm new here too! I turned 15 and through a lot of hard work, I got my 66 Nova, and my parents got me a small set of craftsman tools for Christmas. I have since added LOTS of tools and have just purchased my 4th mid 60's Nova. A gearhead has to have tools and it apears that you have one hell of a good start. I'll also tell you that those tools and that old 66 Nova kept me out of alot of trouble as a kid! Just don't try to "keep up with the Jonses" these guys have built up their colections over a lifetime.

Out of my mind... Be back soon!
Welcome to GJ, Marshall! I can say that even before you got that extra haul of tools, you were way ahead of where I was when I was 15!

To answer your question about the Japanese sockets, for some reason their tool brands never got a lot of respect over here. Not to say that they didn't deserve it, only that they didn't get it. I have some old Japanese sockets and they've worked just fine for me. Nowadays they have brands that rival high-end stuff from the US or Germany, but they aren't generally sold here due to lack of demand.

Good to know! I'll make sure I put the Japanese sockets in the box then. Thanks a million.

Welcome to your wallets demise! :lol_hitti
Oh I know it. I don't think it's humanly possible for me to get into something that isn't outrageously expensive. And I have to get a car first. Priorities, Priorities.

Congrats on your new tools. My grandfather gave me my first socket set when I was about your age, and I will keep them forever.

Welcome on...... I got serious at 14 or so with lawnmower repair and keeping my Cushman scooters in action, fifty years ago. I still have hand tools older than me and I bought a used 6 drawer Remline box for a starter and lost it all one night when some *** hit my garage at age 16. I lost a box full of S-K tools. But I have had a great comeback.

It's good to see you're off to a good start. I started with a similar Cman set as well. I still have and use all of it except the ratchets. You'll find you need to add larger sizes and more wrenches but that will come with time. Welcome to not having any money to put back in your savings account cause there's that next tool you want to buy instead.
