Starting over...

Well gentlemen (and ladies of course!) I've come to a rather big bumping the road of life.
You see I'm getting divorced and unfortunately Ive had sell ALL of my garage possessions...tools, tool box ect. and Even my Miller Dynasty 280dx (a $7000 tig welder) I recently sold about $15k worth of tools for $1400....yep you read that right.
So its time that I start from step one. The only tools I've got left are a snap on F872 ratchet and a set of snap on SAE flat box wrenches.
In your guy's opinions; where should I start? Should I get a really cheap tool set and replace those tools with snap on or mac in due time? or just buy a tiny bit of good tools when I can? And what area should I start with? Sockets? Wrenches?
The reason why I'm looking to buy tools again is because theres only 1 other thing I love more than riding choppers, and thats wrenching on them. Well when I'm not welding haha.

I cleaned out my grandpa's shop when he passed a few years ago, and have tons of extra stuff just sitting in boxes because it isn't worth my time to sell it all individually...if you're anywhere near long beach, come buy and I'll give you a smokin' deal on anything I have that you need...I have lots. the only thing a man should ever marry is his tools lol .
On serious note, I would start by building up socketry and wrenches in as decent quality as can and seems sense for your usage. Buy other stuff as needed and of quality budget and usage that make sense.
No point blowing too much on snap as you better with broader tool coverage than just a tote tray of snapon .

If my wife and I got divorced she would get everything all my tools as she bought most of my massive collection because of the stupid prenuptial agreement I only get what I came with the whole family is wack rich *** holes, I'd just pawn it all at once and dissaper lol. It would kill me to start over I'd be broken hearted thank God my dad gave me most of my big snap on collection I'd kill over those tools. I recently found out my wife cheated o me yeah screwed someone else and we got into it and I went to jail over it I'm not and cannot get over it so I might be in your shoes soon.

If you are still "getting divorced".........I don't know that I would spend much money on things like tools outside of what I absolutely needed to work on things.


Divorce is a rather bumpy road with lots of twists and turns.......I treated it like being in escrow on a home. No major purchases until finalized. Even then, child support can and will be adjusted as time goes on so I don't know that I would spend time hoarding things for a hobby.

Of course, I'm speaking from my own experience and from what I've seen in others going through a divorce. I have done nothing but downsize since the divorce personally. I've seen many a man end up living in his car on the back end of a divorce because he lost it all and could barely afford child support/spousal support let alone much in the way of rent or utility bills.

2 - you want to get even with her you should sell me all those tools for $500, just put it all in flat rate boxes, or I could just come by and pick it all up. I'd give you back your dad's tools later...

Well, here is what I did for sockets and wrenches; I needed a small, versatile set of high quality tools on a budget:

Honestly, if I had to go back and do it again, the only thing that I would change would be to get the Harbor Freight 3/8" ratchet instead of the Snap On.

Actually, I might have skipped 3/8" sockets entirely, at least in the short run...

But he may need some tools to fix his cars and bikes. Best to have an el cheapo set (even HF or Stanley) so that you don't have to pay a professional to fix your car. Then after he gets better tools, the cheaper set can be relegated to the trunk, shed, basement, etc..

Or he can sell the el cheapo set, but people are such skin flints he will only get 20 cents on the dollar, so may as well keep the cheap set.

But at least having a basic set of tools can take the pressure off and give ya more time to cherry pick the good tools.

He can sell cheap **** for as much as he paid for it but,, it's at near disposable prices anyway. if I had to start over with tools it would be HF and maybe a Sears kit first.

I always thought tools fell under the category of "Livelihood" and weren't subject to divorce settlements.

Probably not true if one is, say, an accountant.

Our mechanic at work is going through a divorce and his wife can't make a claim against his tools at work because those are considered his livelihood. However, she can make a claim against his tools at home.

Well, that *****.....
When I split with my ex, we had 2 arguments over splitting up the stuff we had.
One was guns/ammo. We eventually came to an agreement on that stuff...
The 2nd was my tools....
I left her with a small assortment of hand tools for around the house, (mostly what was already in the garage) my work tools and boxes left with me. She really had no idea what I had at work.....

So far I'm fine all sorry to share so much it just made me think reading ops post, it's always cheaper to stay together that's for sure buying used is the best way to go always I think unless it's electronic power tools having the warranty is very important.
