stick 'em or similar for handles

I was noticing while working in the near zero temps that the handle to my hammer was really slick. Between cold gloves (mechanics style) cold hammer and many hours of use (worn grip) it is just hard to hold onto with any dexterity. Now there was some stuff football players used to use called stick 'em and I was wondering is there is something similar still available or what people use to keep handles somewhat grippy.

I was thinking hairspray or rosin on the handle and my dad's first thought was to use hockey tape on them. I may get a new hammer at some point but I am not going to throw away the otherwise perfectly good ones I have.

So what are the old tips?

Hockey tape has been working fine on wood, aluminum, and now composite hockey sticks for decades. To make the tape more durable and sticky, I used to rub some "Mr. Zog's *** Wax" on it, used mainly for surfboards.

Here's an old pro hockey trick. Take black hockey tape, wrap it sticky side out a few times around a stick, handle or anything else that is handy and disposable. Rub it on what ever you want to become grippy, it will leave a black goo that is very tacky  Last's longer than pine tar.

I've use the tacky mesh tape used on tennis racket grips. Works great. I think there's something similar for golf clubs.

I think I might have the answer to what you are looking for,I see it used by woodworkers and they seem to like it.

If you go to the Duluth trading Co. web site or give them a call at 1-800-505-8888,they have a product called My Grip;it is kind of like silly putty, you put it around the hammer handle and hold it very tight for a few min. then when you let go it will leave your finger groves and it gets very hard (I think with heat),anways everytime you use the hammer you will have your own grip each time and that makes it easy to use.
