Wish I knew where I saw this at but someone had taken quart plastic oil bottles and cut a window in the side of them, They would lay them on the side with the window up and store on a shelf like that. You could fit a lot of containers in a small area and the containers are essentially free. Plus it has a spout to make it easy pouring the stuff out.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

Finally got one for my shop. But that was only half the problem. I am detailing my story as it may help others. You see, I, too, dug all the cool ways to store nuts and bolts on these threads. But I couldn’t commit to just one system. And that was the problem. Here’s what I mean.

For the longest time, I used those shallow boxes with lids and have fixed dividers already in them. (pictured below) I would pick one or two up when I could get a deal on them because as we all know, those babies aren’t cheap. But that presented another problem; where to put them and how to access them easily. When they’re full, them babies is HEAVY!

In the meantime, I keep seeing some sweet cabinets on here and leaning towards them. So it was time to make a decision. I had to calculate just what kind of storage system and better yet, if I was going to build it myself or not.

Part of the decision was made by a friend who gave me over 300 lbs of brand new fasteners, some of them SS. Well, that kinda threw a monkey wrench into the plans as that kind of quantity would over fill those flat, divided cabinets. I had been saving clear plastic jars like the ones used for peanut butter and some of those were quickly filled, too. One more piece of the puzzle came to me about having extra of one kind of nut or bolt. Keep the excess in one area and restock when needed. Finally, I felt I was gaining on this thing.

I kept on watching on CL and even eBay for local cabinets. I found one on CL and took off for it, getting it after making up my mind on the system to use in my shop. It helped that this cabinet wouldn’t take up too much room. So it all came down to the time to build a new one from scratch and how much room it would take up. I wasn’t trying to be **** about it, I just wanted to do it only one time and get it over with. The guy wanted $50 and didn’t want to take less.

I got it. It’s five feet tall, 29 inches wide and 20 inches deep. I’m going to make an angle iron frame for it so I can put some wheels under it. Believe me, even moving this thing when its empty is a chore. It is a TANK!!! Look closely at the detail shot of the slot for the drawer. There are two metal rollers at the threshold of each opening. EVERYTHING is metal.

For now, I’m gonna just stash it out of the way. When I get caught up with my painting projects and have reclaimed more SF of my shop back, I’ll take it apart, clean it up good and give a good base coat of tool box red. And yeah, it may get some pinstriping or monster paint. Who knows? There may be another contest like the Battle of the Killer Cans!

Hope my long dissertation can help someone else on this problem.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

Yeah, your deal was much of the inspiration of me going that way, Breeze.

What are you using for the inner containers? It looks like cut off plasitc containers. Oil cans, maybe, on the yellow ones?

Hey, I hope those OSB walls are painted now days!

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

The containers are used plastic oil bottles, the bigger ones are antifreeze jugs cut off. I even have a few laundry jugs in there too somewhere LOL! The plastic works well and don't get moldy like cardboard boxes do, especially if it gets damp in the garage. The cabinet holds a ton of them so it's easy to seperate all the different sizes of bolts, nails etc. I still have some of those little plastic drawer units on top for all the tiny stuff. With the oil can jugs, you can pull them out if needed and take them with you, plus they're free when you change your fluids. And everyone likes free!

Right on. I'm thinking of going the same way. The drawers on mine are tall so I could use taller bins, too. As you can see in the photo, even the biggest peanut butter and mayo jars fit with room to spare.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

Here is what I've constructed... I've built six of these 8' storage units over the past 20 years or so for all my hardware.

Works well, and best of all, you can build one in about 4 hours. I just rip 3/4" finish ply on the cabinet saw into 3.5" x 8'. Then cut it to length on the miter saw. Scrap makes up the vertical blocks.

Stack the parts between the 2x4 verticals with lots of glue, even on the back of the shelves to bond them to the plywood back. Dry for a day or so then lots of poly to seal things.

Hope this prompts some ideas.

Breeze,

You get a big  from me Just for the John Mazmanian Willys poster

Thanks, It is such a cool picture, I love them old gasser cars. I put a clear laminate over both sides of it to try to preserve it. That poster is old and brittle, or should I say it was. It's been on that wall for about 8 years now and is still holding up well for being around 40 years old.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

Mine ain't fancy, here's repeat post:

I've made my shelving out of the stripped forms and plywood from the garage foundation pour. So, it's not all prettified like a lot of guy's storage shelving. But it hides my lawn tractor, grill, and holds up 3 tons of wood-stove pellets 5' off the floor. So I can't complain. This year I added two decks and saved the lumber from the make-shift porches in a little pile for most of the summer.

It was time to use some of that scrap and make up a "cabinet" to set the computer upon, as well as something to hold 36 #10 tins of nuts and bolts. I do food storage and canning... and when ever we empty a #10 can of wheat/flour/dehydrated potatoes, I get the can. They were multiplying like rabbits... so had to be organized.

What resulted from my thoughts and an after noon was the wood stand with 4 shelves. Each shelf pulls out and holds nine #10 tins full of anything I want to put in them.. .right now, nuts and bolts, misc small auto parts and other stuff. Nestled between the two Craftsman tool chests the computer sits on top with all the Factory Service Manuals on the HD ready when needed. It's protected from flying sparks from the welder, stuff from the grinder and other flying tools when I get a little annoyed.

You don't have to have money to organize a garage, just a little time, and some material. At least it works for me.

Franklee,

That turned out awesome. It's also exactly what I want to do to mine.

Can you tell me more about the base it's on. I think I see wheels. That's what I want to do, too.

Very nice FrankLee. I would like to re-paint mine some day as well... But I know how much work that will entail. With the cabinet on wheels, does it move around when you open it ? or is it heavy enough not to move. Just curious.

Franklee,

Have you filled that baby up yet? If so, how did it move with that wood frame and those wheels. I know mine is heavy even when empty so I gotta pay attention to that.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

Not much. Actually, nothing. I've been busy painting my Killer Rag Can. That and the holiday kinda screwed up my shop time.

But that may change tonight. I try to bust up the work week by hitting the shop on Wednesdays. At this point, tho, it's all about clean up and reclaiming SF. I clean and organize for a few hours (more like five) then I treat myself by working on a project. Once I get enuf room, I'll build a base like you did and put my cabinet on it.

I'm gonna put the cabinet into play without doing any crazy paintin' on it. Maybe Breeze and I can have another contest using nuts and bolts storage. So for now, it will go to work first with that new base and wheels.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

I just picked up a pair of file card cabinets that I plan to use for hardware and consumables storage. I bought them from a liquidator that handles mostly office furniture. I didn't pay very much attention to the labels, stickers and writing on the cabinets. When I got them home I noticed that they came from a hospital that is in a town about an hour from where I live. (Team Chevy - if you're reading this you'll know where I am talking about). You'll see from one of the photos that they were used to store "autopsy" records!:shocking:

The drawers are incredibly heavy. The divider racks you see in the photos pop out and it reduces the weight of each drawer by about two thirds. Each drawer is 26" deep and the sliders are full extension. Finally, most of my stuff in one spot!:bounce:

You'll be surprised how much those cabinets will hold. It is great to be able to have all your hardware in one spot. Some of my drawers are loaded up full and the drawer slides are way more heavy duty than needed. Having old Autopsy records in there wouldn't bother me, if the drawers were bigger and had bodies in them... thats a different story! Congrats on your find!

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

I use plano boxes , about 1.5" deep in the 8"x14" version. I've built a rack that holds a bunch of these cases. That way I can put a bunch of different bolts/nuts in one case and take with when needed, plus their clear so their easy to see through, lastly, their completely enclosed, so everyting in each bin doesn't get dusty.

gumbudah, I use the plano boxes as well and am working on a rack design for them. Can you post up some pics of the rack you built?

I have one of those card cabinets, but I use it for a tool box.

I use the cut up oil bottles but keep them in a set of drawers from one of those old “battle ship gray” steel desks from the 1950’s.
They are easier to find, and often are free.
I only use the 3 drawer, right hand side.
It is on a plywood pallet with HD casters for when I have to move it.

I am on the look out for a second one to make them double high.

I used the Akro bins and the wall mounted open organizers before, but became annoyed as they tended to collect whatever dust, dirt, sawdust or whatever else was floating around in the air. I have 4 just like these unused at this time due to a lack of floor and open wall space. I borrowed MP&C's photo, got mine at a body shop that was closing down, $100 for all four couldn't go wrong at that price.

I bought those bins on Ebay, here is the link. Boxes

I have mine in bolt bins with these boxes, they work great. they let me get two items into each slot to save space. I screwed wooden dividers into nut/washer ones, so I can get two items in each box, 4 things in one bin.

I have two of these bins.

I passed on those open ones cuz the always get dusty and dirty. And if you're doing any painting, grinding or sanding, it's worse yet.

Check with companies in your area that specialize in office furniture liquidations. I responded to a Kijiji ad and bought 2 file card cabinets last month (see post #64 above). I had 40 cabinets to chose from! ... and yes, they make good tool boxes.

Re: Storeing Nuts and Bolts ?

I never really worried about a consolidated place for fasteners until a couple of years ago. That's when I was given the following cabinet. The couple had gotten divorced and it was being orphaned. It weighs a ton.
Overall picture:
P4010237.jpg

There are two different sized drawers. These are the small ones. They come with dividers but I prefer using some kind of plastic container. That way I can pull the container that I need and take it to the job.
P4010239.jpg

Unfortunately I have NO idea of where to get more of these and would gladly buy another one.

I also made a cart for the woodshop to hold nails and wood screws. It's on rollers and again the different sizes are loaded in old oil cans so I can take them to the job.

If I were starting all over with a clean slate and nice budget, I'd be inclined to do what the hardware stores and what radio shack does:

Group similar items in shallow drawers that contain lots of bins.
