I'm looking to pick up a stubby 3/8" fine-tooth ratchet, any suggestions on a decently priced model with a selector lever? I have a Gearwrench 81209 that I really like, but curious if there are other options in a similar price range. Thanks!

So you want a full size 3/8 stubby, and not a 3/8 in 1/4 body?
I've never had a true stubby 3/8, my Wright 3426 is 7" and I consider that stubby, if I need something smaller I reach for my SK 3/8 in 1/4 body.

I have an Sk 1/4" body with 3/8" head, prefer to stick with just a "short" 3/8" ratchet.

The NAPA one pictured above hasn't been made in a number of years. It's actually a KD ratchet made for NAPA back in the day.

However, NAPA has a couple of stubby Carlyle 3/8 ratchets.

I did the same thing as knurlednut and made mine from a Wright standard 3/8” ratchet I gave a dollar for out of a pawnshop junk bin. You can pick whatever ratchet type you prefer for a donor if you like round or pearhead. It works very well.

Did it with a Duralast round head.

I have the gearwrench one that potato posted, it's not too bad, but the only thing I don't like about it is the notched flex head. I would rather have the ability to use it at any position.

Serious?

No way you guys made these... they look like they were manufactured that way.

I had the Gearwrench 3/8" stubby (81209) years back when Cripe had them for $6. Really good little ratchet.

I've since sold it off and gone with 3/8" in 1/4" body ratchets. Just found them to be more versatile when you really need them. The Snap-on 3/8" in 1/4" roto ratchet has been by far the most useful.

If I needed another true 3/8" stubby, I'd probably just run down to Napa and go with a Carlyle R38S.

Yup. Wasn’t that hard. The ratchet had a knurled handle to start with so I just cut it off leaving some of the original knurled handle then ground the end rounded and polished it nice and smooth leaving a knurled “knot” that gives you something to pull on. It was a one beer project. Give one a try for yourself.

Very impressive. I may have to do it.

Thanks

What is the part number on the Snap on 3/8" in 1/4" roto?

I have the GearWrench 81212F and together with the Snap On ratcheting stubby wrench works well especially removing coil packs and sparkplugs on the bank 1 cylinders that hugs the firewall plus other tight places.

I have one of those. I like it, but it's not a fine tooth. It's got a good feel to it. Can lean on it as hard as anyone's likely to with one hand and you're not going to hurt anything, and it's fast to flick back and forth when running something on or off. Nice size handle, decent knurling. Here's a shot of it next to some of the other usual suspects. Those are a 1/4" drive SK breaker and 1/4" SK flex ratchet next to it.
