Taps are something I only buy from McMaster-Carr. They sell quality products and the pain of a cheap tap far exceeds the gain from saving $10.

I don't think this was a matter of tap quality but thanks for that lead.

How does a tap handle **** out? Did it twist in two? Break in half? That statement makes no sense whatsoever
How does it make no sense whatsoever? You are reaching now. Can a handle not wear out to the point where it no longer turns consistently and/or effectively? Have you not ever seen a 12 point socket not be able to do it's job pushing you over to a 6 point socket? The Amazon handle I linked to it above was more than sufficient to turn the tap correctly whereas the pictured one could no longer do so.

Here are pics of the wear on the tap handle. Pictures do no justice at times but the left side of the square is actually rather worn. This set must be 15 years old.

Nice work 3car -- glad you worked it out and I have to say I learned a lot from this thread; haven't ever broken a tap but that's because I almost never do any tapping. Hopefully some of the info here sank into my head in case I ever do!

One of the things I learned about by chasing a link posted here is this solution to broken taps:

Damn! And don't anyone give me any of that "buy once cry once" **** either!

So the tap was spinning in the tap holder? That's not what you said in the beginning.
