Sturdevant Mad Torquer.

Back when I started out every car and motorcycle magazine had ads for Sturtevant beam torque wrenches. They had a cartoon character with arms an legs and a torque wrench body. They called him the Mad Torquer. You could buy T shirts and decals with his image. I see the T shirts were $1.50. Sturtevant later merged with Richmont and has more recently been bought by Snap On. Does anybody have any gear or a good picture?

I still have the 0-50 in lb that is shown in the ads. It is the one with the ball handle. It is tiny but 3/8" drive. The ball was molded on yellow clear plastic but it disitegrated. There is a similar one still being made. Mine has a 1/4" shank and is fixed. They generously sent me a replacement for my ancient wrench.The new one has a 5/16" shank with a cross drilled hole. The ball comes with a spring type roll pin and is designed to swivel, to fix the point where you exert the force. It is overkill. I put mine back to back with another wrench and no matter where I pushed on the stem. I got the same reading. I dont want to drill or tap mine so I will just get a 1" ball and glue it on. I don't want to thread it either. The chrome plating is not in great shape.

Great find. I would never try to use it. I suspect it would fall apart. If you look at the wrenches in the lower right hand corner, the one on the the left is the one I posted the picture of.

Here is the one on my old Dodge truck's toolbox. It is on the face of the front cover along with the Iskenderian Poly Dyne Decal and the D/A Oil one, plus the other misc ones. Fits the vintage car show theme perfectly, patina and all.
