I have had a few local electricians tell me I should use 1/0 copper on the hot legs, #2 on the neutral and #6 on the ground. Sound right? I do all the work myself but the last thing I want is to do it again because an inspector has a problem with it. Thanks.

Unless you plan on running 3 or more of those at the same time, you are way over kill. 60A is more than enough for a 1 man operation.HVAC, welder, lathe, drill press and maybe a milling machine. I do not plan on using 100A but I would like the option down the road if necessary.
The 6 AWG grounding conductor would not be in compliance with 250.122(B). as the ungrounded conductors has been increased from the minimum conductor size required for the installation.
