Sub panel help

Any one know what size wire I will need for a 210' run of direct burial to a 100A sub panel? Main 200A panel is in basement, underground to new pole barn from there. Thanks in advance.

You can use type RHH/RHW-2/USE wire if doing direct bury and make up your 4 wires if you don't want the assembled MHF cable. As said the closest size of MHF is 2/0, so making up the run from individual wires you should be able find the #1-Cu or #1/0-Al to do so. Remember the EGC can be smaller than the current carrying conductors.

I have had a few local electricians tell me I should use 1/0 copper on the hot legs, #2 on the neutral and #6 on the ground. Sound right? I do all the work myself but the last thing I want is to do it again because an inspector has a problem with it. Thanks.

You're getting ahead of yourself.

First, how did you come up with needing a 100 amp panel? What kind of equipment will be in your garage? HVAC?

HVAC, welder, lathe, drill press and maybe a milling machine. I do not plan on using 100A but I would like the option down the road if necessary.

I ran a 4 wire direct burial aluminum wire number of years ago and it did not hold up well. I then ran copper in conduit and it has lasted. I would not recommend direct burial if something happens there is no fix, just dig it up and replace it.

The 6 AWG grounding conductor would not be in compliance with 250.122(B). as the ungrounded conductors has been increased from the minimum conductor size required for the installation.

Unless you plan on running 3 or more of those at the same time, you are way over kill. 60A is more than enough for a 1 man operation.

You would save a bundle by downsizing on wire by downsizing, especially for that length. Remember, you can install a 100A panel and feed it with smaller wire as long as the wire is protected by by a 60A breaker in your main.
