That tree is just not suitable for the soil. It should have grown more than that by now.

Which one ... The Broken Hill one or the or the local redgum seedling ??

The redgum suffered a bit from frost issues I think ? .... that and the fact it probably wasnt happy about being relocated, from where the seed fell ...

What ! No Turkey or Roast Chook this Christmas ?

Hahhh.

Considering the amount of feathers that blow into the shed ... I'm planning on LOTS of roast chook at Xmas .. :D:D

I refer to this one >
100_5258b_zps94b18c87.jpg

I do believe it should be much bigger by now. The soil can not be right for it or it is simply not suitable to your area.

100_5260b_zpsf533d32b.jpg

This one I take it came from Broken Hill and if so it likes the soil climate and the ground.

I just love a Roast Chook at Christmas.

Well ... whats everyone think ?

Should I post this in the various ... " how do I get a brokedown vehicle, up into the garage", threads ??

WellWinch01b_zps710dc545.jpg

... or just say its now, a garden ornament alongside the driveway .. :D

I did suggest it might make a good rotisserie for Barby&Quew, sometime next year ... but apparently, they are too young to make jokes about yet .. .. :D

BarbieampQuoo01b_zps39966255.jpg

Inside the shed is still in turmoil and not worth taking photos of.

New 12" sliding compound saw should arrive tomorrow - to help turn offcuts, into sawdust and possibly useful bits of wood for shelving and tool racks .. :D

The constant shifting of stuff around for best fit ... has unearthed some old stuff I thought I had lost tho,

.... and lost some stuff I thought I had ..

No fancy Knipex or Channellock multigrips for me .. ;);)

Footprint10b_zpsd7c308b8.jpg

Wish I had found 'em a while back - when I needed something big enough for the cast iron bathtub drain ... instead of having to go out and buy something.

... and this aussie made shifter has just got to be better ... than an old sidchrome or a bahco .. ;);)

HVMcKay01b_zps98a29def.jpg

Was most likely part of the tool kit for these old aussie made, farm implements.

100612-07b.jpg

... probably handy for the jeep too ... with its', multitude of fastener sizes ..

Should have a 12v trolley finished shortly ... Will be a mobile lighting stand, jumpstarter, charger and electric fence power supply,

... if it doesnt look too farmfabbish ... I might even amuse you all by posting a pic of it .. :D

We need to see a photo of that ASAP.

Patience Grasshopper, patience .. :D

... need to buy a little bit more shs and angle steel yet.

Big Day in the shed today .....

Got stuck into the beast,
widened the wheel track,
fitted some bigger offroad wheels,
gave it a rear wheel alignment,

and added power steering ......

Now lets see the silly thing tip over - next time I drag it down the driveway ....

CompressorUpgrade01b_zpsa79aa3e1.jpg

Yesterday was a bit of fun too.

Unwrapped the new sawdust maker,

Delivered01b_zps7ed7e591.jpg

yessss .... its a no name chinese one ... but it ought to be fine for a DIY tool.

Dirt cheap for a 12", 3yr warranty, Doesn't hide behind an american or german name - just the importers ... and the young fella selling it was pretty honest with answers about construction and durability.

Went over it checking for square, loose bits, etc ....

AngleCheck01b_zpsd966b917.jpg

Cleaned up a coupla dodgy threads.

Thankfully, and unlike most cheapy clamps ... these ones had screws to hold the cups on,

... instead of the usual system of beating the end of the bolt to form a makeshift rivet head ..

ThreadFix01b_zpsc5a5b503.jpg

awwww ... the poor little 8 1/4 looks soooo cute ... :D

Cute01b_zpsab40cc35.jpg

Wont be storing this new one on a shelf tho ... tis a weighty little ****** and will need a wheeled stand.

sighhhh ..... more ****** fleabay castors needed ..

Anyway, by the time I applied a bunch of bandages to my hands, and cleaned the blood off the saw,
... The alloy casting is a bit wild and has got some edges sharper than the blade .. :scared: .. :D,
... it was about 1800hrs,

1800hrs01b_zps4ddfc603.jpg

.... so since Im always on at the neighbours about their noise, I didnt do any test cuts until today.

Surprise Surprise

... every cut was a good as this, and the angles and settings, were almost spot on - straight out of the box.

TestCut01b_zps0d418bd4.jpg

Now to see how long it lasts. ;);)

Main reason I bought it is because the rails are part of the base - not the saw ... and the rails are supported both ends,

Of course what I would really like is a nice new Makita ... but one made about 10yr ago .. ;);)

... anyway, if its any good - and it seems to be at this early stage... there might be another one arriving next year ... for conversion to a 48" crosscut saw ..

Ohhh yeah ... had a little visitor today,

I guess she was looking for a well endowed mate .. :D

We need to see a photo of that ASAP.

Patience ? :wtf: Stop teasing us and post a photo.

As for the Redbacks, Cheap Fly Spray works well.

Should be one of the next jobs on the list ... thats not house or garden ..

Still looking for a suitable weatherproof box for the charger etc.,
... but a coupla fleabay 12v 50w LED floodlights have arrived,
... boat battery box from B.C.F. is on its way,
... telescopic pole materials for floodlights sourced ... scored an old extendable, TV ant mast,
... a cheap Bunnings trolley or build something ??? ... Not decided yet.

Should be a less embarrassing setup than this .. :D

... altho I did shout the old trolley some new puncture proof wheels today.

Daken%2002b_zpswgm7l0kd.jpg

As for shed things happening ... not much ..

Proper power supply has been put on hold until the house grows a bit closer to the shed ... the less trenching through the sandstone the better .. ;);)

Christmas came and went ... the kids got new toys ....

Flynn%2001b_zpsunzlwhvm.jpg

This though ... Will probably be the weirdest little task to be undertaken in the shed for 2015.

Ollas type, Veggie patch, watering system.

Ollas%2001b_zpstzxcnhxv.jpg

Ollas%2002b_zpsds8goazy.jpg

one of dozens of info links.

http://permaculturenews.org/2010/09/16/ollas-unglazed-clay-pots-for-garden-irrigation/

A few more bits and pieces arrived recently, to make life better in the shed ...

300mm%20slides%2001b_zpsetxobjzn.jpg

KK%20Castors%2001b_zpsymi4xqrb.jpg

Now I guess I need to get busy modifying bench and shelf frames.

ohhhhh yeah .... my dodgy 6" electronic verniers for knockabout jobs,
... that were bought new about 6mnths ago
... were generously replaced today - under warranty,
... with the more expensive 8" version that dont eat batteries every few weeks .. :D

Glad they were store bought and not fleabay.

Thanks for the update Carves.

The draw slides and castors look familiar.

Regards

Drawer slides are from the online mob in Sth Aust.
Castors are cheapies from a mob called KK Fasteners or something, in Sydney ... can be got by ebay also.

Some of the castor wheels were actually, almost round ..
... but they are sturdy enough for what I wanted.

We need more on that 12 volt trolley.:bounce:

... almost there ... will just be a trolley with battery, fence controller and LED Floods.

... couldnt find a cheap enough, weatherproof box, for the battery charger and other 12v bits I wanted to keep together.

No shed works happening ... apart from tidying and reorganising, again .. ..

Found this in the bottom of a box that hadnt been opened for a while ... gave it a clean up and it looks as purdy, as the overpriced ones on ebay .. :)

... an old, Joseph Marples one I believe ... and for all you non woodworking types - its for scratching lines in wood .. :)

Mortice%20Gauge%2001b_zpsijq4vwto.jpg

Of course, I needed a coupla screwdrivers for job,

... so I got sidetracked a bit - sorting out, Stanley screwdrivers and Turner, Turner/Stanley screwdrivers.

I have that same Ryobi chopsaw, worked well until the casting cracked at the ear it pivots on. It's now over at my place in France and I use it for hacking up scrap timber to light the fire with as it's less accurate than me and a handsaw!

G'Day fellas ... thanks for dropping in.

Mad Max .. Australias overseas identity ..

Just think how well known Canada would be,

Spotted your woodworking shed a while back ... Good idea - keeping the different messes seperated ..

hmmmmm ... that little ryobi drop saw  ... There have been days when I would have been quite happy,

... if it was in France too ..

I must dig out my Stanley assortment Carves, you have quite a collection there.

Mornin 1/2 Cup,

Picked up those coupla grungy extras recently ... Tips are OK and they should clean up fine for general use .... or paint stirrers or something ..

Hey Carves,
Nice to see you here on GJ. I just read your thread, I like the shed. Doesn't it get hot inside without any insulation?
I thought that summer in Oz was scorching. But it probably doesn't get much hotter than here in the summer.

G'Day bad luck,

Good to see you on GJ too.

Shed is pretty good in summer ... I went with 9ft walls and a steeper roof pitch than the more common kit sheds, which helps a bit.

Having doors at either end, lets plenty of breeze in/thru ... and the lockup area has roof insulation.

Does need some roof vents tho for when I'm away, and its all closed up,

... as the 5gal plastic jerry cans ... look like 7gal ones, on a 110* day ..

Must be Spring.

I'm having a cleanup.

... and not before time .. ..

Before the shed went up ... We had been using some cheapo, mini pallet racking.

Figured that 40ft of it would be a good thing in the new shed.

ShedFill02b_zps3aafe8d7.jpg

Wrong figuring ..
... 6inches of wasted space behind it, 4inches of wasted space at either end,
... Not enough wall, hanging space - even with an empty shelf bay,
... a nightmare to clean behind.

Sooo ... after hating the place for ages, and tripping over the junk piling up in front of the shelves .. ..

mess%2003b_zpsavwxkl6v.jpg

mess%2001b_zps60dtwr8f.jpg

mess%2002b_zps20fwhuvp.jpg

A bit of a plan was thrashed out thanks to googly sketchup.
This will lose me about 2ft of space, around the car ... but I get as extra,

... two benches with back boards for tool hanging, plus shelf ends and wallspace for hanging other stuff,

theoretically ..

Floor%20Plan_zpstvxuph1v.jpg

So first up theres a bunch of wood needs sizing, so I needed a mobile saw bench.

4x4%20sawbenchb_zpsbwwzmnan.jpg

ooops ... no - not that one ... maybe something a little more nannystate/OHS friendly .. :)

Mobile%20Sawbench%2001b_zpsfor3wprd.jpg

Those two bits were needed for the most important job of the day ... somewhere/something, to store and move junk around with.

Temp%20Bench%2001b_zpsefr6oeh5.jpg

Temp%20Bench%2002b_zps8hl2mqbx.jpg

Finished chopping up the rest of the wood I wanted, and started on the next job.

Some metal working,

Shelf%20Castors%2003b_zpsmecwejvt.jpg

Tacked the 2x1 RHS together with the little inverter welder

Shelf%20Castors%2002b_zpsyq1yxesy.jpg

nope ... no weld pics ... my welding crew gets embarrassed - having photos taken of them, laying down a bead.

Welding%20Crew%2001b_zpsgzqocs6f.jpg

... and no - thats a not an extra thick marking line ... Its where the cutoff disc will go thru ... if Im not happy with two shelves fixed back to back.

Being a cheapskate - and using 6 wheels - instead of 8 on separate bases, just might come back and bite me yet ..

Shelf%20Castors%2001b_zps5dfznjcg.jpg

Got reminded of the, forgotten importance, of open ended spanners ... while fitting the castors,

... twice .. .. .. :D

Castor%20Fitting%2001b_zpsaacxbijv.jpg

Need to get some more castors out of Sydney ... and some more 2x1 RHS next week ... but I think the plan will come together.

Dble%20Shelving%2001b_zpsb0jvwu7p.jpg

Bench-Shelving%2001b_zpswsopwyio.jpg

Felt like it might snow today but I thought I better keep at it ...

Haven't been on GJ long yet, but certainly a few beers consumed pondering use of space after getting through a few threads.

Shed envy ??? ...... I'll swap ya then ..

So today ....

... there I was happily laying out the frame for second shelf unit after cutting it up,

... and a little voice says ... I need some cowpoo for the veggie patch and the grass next to the shed.

Righto then ... I'll hook the trailer up and we'll go get it.

No Need, she says ... It will get delivered.

Great ... back to the shed and organising .....

.... wait ? ... what ? ... SOME cowpoo - Will get delivered ??????

.... By Who ..

sighhhh ... there goes the quality shed time this weekend ..

Hahhh.

Found out why the trailer wasnt needed for cowpoo too,

... 4 loads of mulch so far ... and more tomorrow ..

.... geez ... all I wanted was a coupla lengths of steel and a few castors ..

Well it should look good this Spring with all that spread out.

Hoping so .. too late for that little redgum tho ... it carked it ... and had no root growth when I ripped it out last month.

Wont be waiting for the tree to drop another seed tho ... Will get a replacement from the nursery,

Got the second shelf base tacked together today, in between other jobs.

Shelf%202%20base%2001b_zpstlerbdi8.jpg

As usual ... when me and the welder have a playdate, theres a catastrophe.

Got distracted by a visitor ... and cut the filing cabinet, side supports, about 3/16th" too short,
... measured to the wrong side of the cutoff disc ..

Good job Im using steel ... and not wood ... and can add some fill ..

Shelf%202%20base%2002b_zpsizzh5jdg.jpg

Now to see what tomorrow brings.

That little Red Gum must have been sourced from out of your area and not suitable other wise it would have grown well by now. Local nursery should be able to suggest something that will suit better. Make sure it is something that roots well and can give plenty of shade out side the garage .

Still messing with shelving and a workable layout that suits me.

The juggernauts have become jiggernauts ... just too much weight on a 6ft x 4ft base for the little 3inch castors .. :(

... bit of a shame, considering how much effort I went to, getting things almost spot on .. ..

Frame%20Adjustment%2001b_zpsjeppsrrp.jpg

... and no - thats a not an extra thick marking line ... Its where the cutoff disc will go thru ... if Im not happy with two shelves fixed back to back.

Being a cheapskate - and using 6 wheels - instead of 8 on separate bases, just might come back and bite me yet ..

So it was a good job I planned for cutting things in half.

Frame%20Mod%2001b_zpsrbs24exw.jpg

The workshop supervisor,

2906201302b_zps16840496.jpg

... needed a new admin office during the cutting and welding activities.

The silly ****** has a "thing", for sharp, spinny, electrical tools ... and the whippersnipper ..

PlayPen%2011092015b_zpswpdjzfuz.jpg

... and yes ... about 1/2way thru the cowpoo spreading.

Had to do some mower maintenance before relocating the woofers playpen.

Mower%20Maintenance%2001b_zpsxmavnd2x.jpg

Picked up some bargains the other day.

A little 2ndhand, cheapy, router table ... Was more cost effective than making another one from scrap ... and will sit well on the photocopier cabinet - once it gets new castors.

Router%20Table%2001b_zpscrhjhdqv.jpg

ohhh ... and $5 worth of,
... garden bench top timber,
... some saw horses,
... and a mobile tool cart frame.

Beds%2001b_zpscptko1sa.jpg

Trying not to get too attached to these.

Linseed%20Oil%2001b_zpsh5gznds7.jpg

They have been great as temporary benches/storage - while Ive been moving the shelving ... but take up space. Plan is use the 3ft, or maybe the 4ft, beams in them later for smaller mobile benches.

A lot of the original shelves in the racks, were scraps and offcuts I had scrounged ... but Ive replaced the upper/light load shelves, with the doors I scored a while back.

They fit nicely inside the rack framing and stiffen up the whole unit ... Much better than just slapping a loose piece of 1/2inch ply on the top of the beam.

Shelf%20Fitting%2001b_zps9xliwrpg.jpg

... and what looks like an annoying lip ... will actually help keep wheeled storage containers on the shelf - when Im moving the racks for shed cleaning/or extra project space ..

Tomorrow I'll wander up there have another look ... and flip a coin.

Heads ... will be a 10ft x 4ft, tool shadowboard, on the wall between the posts,
Tails ... will be a couple of 6ft x 4ft shadowboards, on or in, the shelf units.

I've had enough of ... thinking, measuring, and googly sketchup ..

You have been busy by the looks of things Carves,.

Shame about the bases, you wouldn't consider an extra pair of castors under the middle to spread the load?

6 mnths ..

Ahh well - its a fairly typical shed ... nothing much exciting ... Just a bunch of the usual, mundane housey/car type jobs.

... so you'se havent missed much really .. :)

Sorry Mr 1/2Cup ... missed your post. I was probably too busy reading yours ... and everybody elses threads .. :)

Gave up on the castors ... diameter is too small,

... and going by the flat spots they developed despite being 200kg rated each
... I think chinese kilograms must weigh a lot less than aussie kilograms ..

Nearly bought the vacant dump next door - but decided theres enough here to keep me busy ... so we passed on it....

... sighhhh ... now we NEED to build a side fence to keep the new renters at bay ... thankfully the new owner has dropped all the trees growing on the boundary, thats stopped us getting it done in the past.

Shed stuff ...

Picked up four lateral filing cabinets back in Nov, for tool storage ... only lightweight, import ones ... but they were new ... and scored 'em for $20 each ... a win, I think

Colo%20Hts%2001b_zpsmclxyxbv.jpg

Been to quite a few sales ... didnt buy much - as either too dear, or I figgered I already had enough of the same stuff.

Shoulda bought this tho ... just to make Drivesitfar jealous of the fancy stand .. :D:D

No really ... I shoulda bought it  - despite the price it eventually sold for ... Would have made a good, wood working sanding disc setup.

Blade%20Sharpener%2001b_zpstnx0t6se.jpg

I have been looking for an old trailer hitch - for a project. Was at a sale the other day and saw a 5gal bucket full of brackets and bolts ,

... with a hitch just showing under all the junk.

100_5871b_zpsvprflymu.jpg

$5 ..

Well ... in addition to the hitch ... most of the hardware was near new 3/8 and 5/16th stuff ... which was also covering up some other rusty goodies on the bottom.

A couple of the best items after some major cleaning. Was surprising just how much was USA items - Usually my scores are all Brit or German.

Fret%20Saw%2001b_zpsbfi6oyom.jpg

Irwin drill bit extensions - retail for about $30 a piece down here .. :wtf:

Also in the bucket was a rusty, little, old, aussie made, gardening fork head. :headscrat

... Aint it amazing, just how much, "they", forget about the yard sale scrounging and "wasted" money,

... when you do something like this for them. :D

Fork%2001b_zpskmgfcvja.jpg

Fitted a new, no splinter, hickory handle too,
... So I'll be in the good books for weeks .. ... maybe .. ??? .. :D

Now, just coz theres a few on here that like repurposed bed frames ...

Quick & dirty sawhorses/stands.

Sawhorse%2015b_zpscaqxenxh.jpg

Bed%20Frames%2020b_zps44hc3xxb.jpg

Been a bit of tool polishing happening.

Got some new bench plans happening - so prepping up/refurbishing, some gear for them.

New%20Bench%20Gear%2001b_zpsphws3wbj.jpg

All the vices are Carters.
I think the little engineer vice is ex Navy - and Ive always cursed it when relocating it and its special mount.

CT%203%2004b_zps8adioyol.jpg

Heh Heh ... with a list to port like that ... its gotta be a navy one ayyy .. ;);) ..

Sash clamps and pipe clamps were NOS, aussie made items, off fleabay ... pricing was reasonable.

A few of the, many, odds & sods, dragged out of my "junk" boxes ... and made ready for use again.

... and my old ETC 1/2 inch ratchet ... still going strong after 30 odd years - despite all the cheater bar marks on the handle ..

ETC%201-2dr%20%20Ratchet%2003b_zpsu5fhihfq.jpg

... and of course ... since a lot of my tool polishing involves a wire wheel .. .. :D ... and I got fed up swapping stuff around between the 6" & 8" grinders.

I got this ol girl going again - so the 6" could be just a wire wheel spinner.

Its an old USA made, B&D jobby ... only 5" but good for final touchups after the 8".

Needed some loving ... past owner was a bit rough and ready.

Fixed the fan with a careful blend of soldering iron welding - and electrical conduit glue just for good measure.

Hopefully it will last as long as the grinding wheels do .. :headscrat

Been a few new items added to the inventory.

One was this, freeby, Millers Falls bender I was given.

Bewdy ..

sighhhh , no, ... not an american, Millers Falls .. :(

... and I think Ive tested it to its maximum capacity ..

Still ... it will be handy for little jobs like socket trays and things ... and I never look a gift horse in the mouth .. ;);)

The little lady received a Ryobi garden edger for xmas, from one of the offspring.

Strangely enough, the only way to get larger, reasonably priced, extra, batteries for it,

... was in a drill kit .. :dunno: .. :see: .. :)

Only Ryobi ... but its still working so far ... quite well too actually ..

Ohhh yeah ... bought one of these other TTI items at the same time ... shame it didnt last more than twenty minutes ... Got replaced with a MakTec.

Luv the bender, that will be pretty handy even though you max it out on foil.:) .......

Yeah ... I figger that with the clamping plate needing to be held by clamps ... I'll also be able to clamp on any sized piece of scrap, for different jobs.

Not as fancy, as your vice brake tho ..

"List to port" :lol_hitti ..............

Heya Grumblebum,

heh heh ... poor ol Carter stuff has always been a bit lacking in finesse.
Reliable, rough and tumble gear tho.

The "list", has been handy,
... to explain away my wonky, hack saw cuts .. ;);) .. :D

Mounted up the wonky little Carter vice, on a relocatable base.

Last time I just planed off the angle ... but since the only plane I have now is one of those useless uncontrollable electric things,

I figgered I could do better with the router, and a chisel.

Decided against that and will give this a try for a while.

Going to be fun using the vice on the tool box now tho .. :D

Carves,

What is the coil protruding from the radiator hose ? Is it lined to stop it collapsing ?

I spy your Milwaukee marker there, are you happy with it ?

You will have to get one of 1/2 cups vise brakes now for the vise

Cheers GB
