Hello, Im a fairly new member and this is my first post. Im hoping Im in the right area for this post. I recently found and bought an older sun machine tester from the 80's. Its a Sun Interrogator 1805. I am hoping to find someone familiar with this unit so I can get some information on using it.
Now when I was younger and worked at my dads garage he had a sun tester that was an analog unit. His was bought in 76. Had the RPM gauge, dwell gauge, oscilloscope, Cylinder leak gauge. I remember dad used that thing every day. Dad is now 78 years old and has told me so many times he wishes he still had that machine. He always talks about the Oscilloscope Thats the reason I bought this Interrogator.
However this machine is a much different machine then he had. First is that it is a computer operated unit. The program discs that I received with the tester are for the years 81-88. It covers Chrysler, GM. Ford, Nissan, Toyota. But i only want to use it on cars from the 70's and back. I want to be able to use the oscilloscope and the ability to kill individual cylinders.
So is there anyone here that is familiar with this machine or can you direct me to a place or person that can help me with it.
I do have the manuals for this piece of equipment but they dont say how it can be used for older cars. I struggle to believe that this machine wouldnt have that ability to work on the older stuff!
Appreciate any help you can throw my way.
Rod

The Sun machine I learned on was at least 10 years older.

Post a picture of the leads and maybe it will jog my memory.

If you go to advanced and then at the bottom look for manage attachments. You upload pictures there. I know there is a sun equipment website where the guy works on them. I just don't remember the name.

Like I said I learned on an older model and I will probably not remember some of the key connections.

The most important connection is the inductive pickup on the coil high voltage lead to distributor center tower. IIRC, this was silver metal clamp. If you had a GM with the coil built into the cap, there was a special adapter.

Next was an inductive pickup for #1 cylinder. This was smaller than the other one, metal and red in color.

Then there were positive and negative connections for the coil (again, adapter required for GM HEI).

I can remember the "parade" that was displayed and that you could cancel any cylinder and watch the RPM drop. You can still do some of that today with a general purpose 'scope. Sometimes you have to look at primary voltages and sometimes you can only view 1 or 2 cylinders at a time. If you don't care about the actual secondary voltages but just want to see the shape of the secondary, several turns of wire wrapped around an old plug wire installed between the COP and the actual plug will give you that.
