SUPER Thin Wall 14mm Spark Plug Socket Needed - Anyone with a lathe? Will pay!

This is for a 4L Porsche 9A2 engine, porsche wants, not kidding, $180 for their socket. It has a 918 Spyder part number so maybe that is why. The plug recess is very, very narrow. The porsche tool is a 6pt, standard type, 14mm, but it is 17.4mm in diameter, the walls are probably about .75mm at the points.

If someone knows of a less $ option, I’ve looked and not found anything, I’m open to that. My BMW 12pt socket is 17.9mm and wont fit.

If someone local in South OC SoCal has an interest in cutting down a socket I’ll pay for the work and supply a 6pt chrome socket. (hopefully less than the Porsche socket!). I don’t want to bother a machine shop or my regular tech that does the bigger work on my cars for such a small job...

If you can't find someone local, I'd put it on a 1/4" hex drive bit and chuck it in the lathe. Angle grinder and a flap disc til it fits.

Wear a respirator. Bet the chrome dust is not great for you

put it in a drill , run an angle grinder on it to reduce the OD.

yes i considered this, on a dril, l angle or bench grinder. My worry is how thin the walls will be and jacking up multiple sockets in the process.

Says its only 0.25mm thick (14.5mm O.D) no experience with it.

How about $27 from Ko-Ken? They say the diameter is 17.0mm.

Edit: $31 at Zoro, but you'll probably get it faster. $5 shipping if you're a member, free over $50. I only use Ko-Ken spark plug sockets these days. They're nice, especially the clip type.

That special Porsche socket is made by Hazet (model 9006/1) but appears to be exclusive.

I saw that one in person, I don’t think it’s 14.5mm, but I’ll go back with a set of calipers.

I think that is the wrench end, the other end is bigger.

it is, and Hazet won’t sell it! The ones hazet does sell are too big, just under 18mm, and 12pt. This one is 6pt. Likely to keep it stronger.

Is it this?

That vas number shows up in a lot of stores.

Yeah this is a 12pt socket for other models, different socket. The part number is 918-721-900-61 and I can’t find an OEM equivalent (from snap on, etc)

Thanks guys for checking!

This one is tiny compared to my pile of 14mm sockets (AST SP1412)… but 17.9mm! Won’t fit :-(

I can do it for you. No guarantee expressed or implied.

My only hesitation is once it gets too thin, you will damage it when torquing and then have a larger problem on your hands.

So just we’re all on the same page, this is the thread corresponding to at least one of the pictures shown in #24 / where that picture probably originated from.

It’s lengthy, but also shows a machined down socket. Interesting read!

And here is another, maybe, maybe not, interesting document on the matter. And might explain why the readily available sockets by Hazet, sometimes listed as alternatives, will probably not work in this specific case.

Kind regards,
Olli

-That's an unusual looking spark plug. The threaded portion needs that much length to reach the combustion chamber? An odd design criteria. The grinder/belt sander suggestions would work for some applications but aren't very good for this one. A thin wall in unknown socket material could lead to fracture due to lack of OD/ID concentricity. I could spin this up, as others have already posted, but the OP should test the turned socket to torque spec in a vise before using it. Contact me by message if you want this done.

Hi all - so I'm good here. A rennlist member ended up making one he's selling for 1/2 the porsche part price (its shown in the linked thread below)... so I won't have to bother any members here and appreciate the offers and assisting in the hunt!

Agreed. Just found a member at Rennlist has made one that works so I'm buying his part from him. I appreciate the offer.

Thanks for linking to the thread over on Rennlist. That is the socket, and in talking to my shop about it, they use a machined down snap on 14mm socket for their 9A2 engine work.

Out of curiosity what's the torque spec on the spark plug

Very light torque 15nm / 11 ft lbs. Generally just enough to compress the washer and a bit of resistance on top.

And regarding this engine, I've 4 porsche sports cars (4 different generations) and this particular engine is the only one that needs something this crazy. The later GT3 need a narrow socket but not THIS narrow. The GT cars have a similar block platform but the heads are totally different on those.

Atleast post some car pics.

You caused me to go check mine and the smallest 14mm plug socket I have is 17.85mm. The 2018-2023 BMW M5 has pretty narrow plug holes.

There is a guy on Rennlist that made one with custom angle extension attached that he rents out for $30, you pay shipping one way, and said he would sell one for $75 including shipping. Here is a thread about it. https://rennlist.com/forums/718-gts...s-4-0-spark-plug-change-tool-required-12.html up. Oops, posted this before I saw you found this guy already.
