I'm going thru my tools, cleaning and repairing if need to.

I prefer, "don't by new, fix the old method"

I did some cleaning for the battery charger/start booster. All the electronic devices seems to collect a lot of dust inside. I bought this 04 so it's time to check inside.

Looks better and now I can leave it charging overnight safely.

I started to clean my welding helmet and noticed that it was broken. The sweatband was holding it together. New headgear costs about 15$ so I fix it cheap

Main reason that I wanted another shelf in the welding area, was that my welding cabinet was pretty packed. It's a high quality cabinet from GWS/Treston

Place where I bought it was and old service workshop. They had a wall of these in two layers and there was only one left to buy:( The price was very okay. They had even the keys for it.

20190617_121115%20%282%29-L.jpg

I emptied it from tools and took it apart for cleaning. I washed the cabinet parts and all the welding tools.

I made pads from cork and glued them on place to protect the floor. I was thinking about casters but the height is now perfect. I adjusted the height to match with my workbench. One meter. My brains is getting used to it. I think my back has been better with high workbench.

There was some holes drilled to the cabinet. Who does that to 400$ cabinet:confused: Well I guess the cabinets were secured to each other with screws.
I was thinking to weld them shut and paint the cabinet. But that would be a lot of work so I countersunk a M5 screw on the holes. Now it looks like the hole has a meaning
Those drawer slides are very smooth. They are made by Thomas Recout. I think it's a sign of quality when your name is stamped in the product

I'm not a big fan of blue or yellow, so I decided to paint the doors to match my "feng shui" in the workshop. Those are not finished yet.

I did some maintenance for my angle grinders. Checked the brushes and cleaned them. I've had a several models of 5" grinders and one I really liked was a blue bosch. It has a thin body that fits my hand just perfect. I have to add one to the shopping list.

Nice updates, I have similar project going on. I'm bringing back all stuff to our Garage after new concrete floor pouring. Cleaning and thinking about storage solutions in progress.

Where did you order that gun maintenance pad?

edit. Oh and say hello or "wuf" to Nelli from Ransu.

Thanks mate:thumbup:

I read about your floor but dont remember what happened to it that you had to re-pour. Did it dry too fast or did it freeze?

I'm sure you are happy now when it's all over and the floor is okay. Looking for updates from your garage:beer:

I ordered the pad from Aliexpress. search "gun cleaning mat" or "large mouse pad". There's a ton of styles to select.

Nelli says wuf back:)

I had two pegboards left for the welding area. I placed the big one between shelves because there is not enough wall space to place it anywhere else. Good place for clamps and other accessories. I found a good place for vice grips too.

All my welding rod packages are pretty beat up.

20190710_150315%20%282%29-L.jpg

I was looking for a ready solution for stick and tig welding rods storage.
There is a lot of ready products where to choose.

For rods.

View media item 94863
For tig rods.

View media item 94862
And even ready racks for canisters.

View media item 94861
I counted all my different welding rods and realized that I need twenty tubes:willy_nil

Prices were about 10$ to 35$ a piece and those tig welding canisters are 36" long. European tig rod is one meter. 39.4":headscrat

So I decided to do those tubes myself. I have some leftover pvc pipe from construction sites.
75mm (3") is pretty good size for regular package of rods.

20190709_151502%20%282%29-L.jpg

I search caps for those tubes to prevent the stick rods from rusting. There is one that goes on top of the tube but that is too big. I want to put these tubes on a shelf in a row. So I search a cap inside the tube.

I had no luck with those ones and then it hit me. Tobacco snus can fits perfectly inside the tube:lol:

20190709_144457%20%282%29-L.jpg

So I went thru my trash bin and search all the empty ones:bounce:

20190709_195145%20%282%29-L.jpg

20190709_195153%20%282%29-L.jpg

I removed the labels and glued one end of the tube shut.

20190709_201525%20%282%29-L.jpg

20190709_201938%20%282%29-L.jpg

Then I made a small knob of a coach bolt in the caps. Rifle shell is a good hole bunch for soft materials. Just make sure that it's empty:lol:

20190709_200030%20%282%29-L.jpg

20190709_195926%20%282%29-L.jpg

I made the tube length 52cm and cut all my tig welding rods in half. So they are 50cm now. I always cut those half so they are easier to handle and feed. Now they are ready to go:thumbup:

20190710_150325%20%282%29-L.jpg

I labeled all the tubes, except one is for random bracing rods. Silver solder etc.
I marked the manufacturer, type, size, and metal what it's suited for.

20190719_205225%20%282%29-L.jpg

Now I got all my welding rods sorted and labeled. Caps have pretty tight fit so the moisture won't ruin the rods. They are also safe from dust and dirt

Don't start to use tobacco to get welding rod tubes:lol: I guess you can buy empty ones somewhere. And if you glue those, they are polypropylene so you have to buy specific glue for PP.

I think pool plumbing fittings are good option for building tubes for stuff. We don't have those in our hardware stores. You can order those but they are expensive.

Now when my welding gear storage is starting to look ready, I decided to do some service for my welders.

2012 I bought a Everlast 200amps ac/dc welder and 50amps plasma cutter and they have serve me well. Machine in the link is a newer model with memory and multi display. I have the old "knob" model. It has a digitally controlled IGBT inverter though.
With 5 years warranty they are okay for a hobbyist like me. I have never opened them so I peeked inside.

Not so must dust inside, the electronics looks very "overseas" I cleaned it with air gun with low pressure. Checked the soldering and so on. If you do a lot of mobile welding It's good to build some supports for those little boards on the top. They are hold just by the pins in the bigger board. I think they cant handle too many hits.
My welders stays pretty much in the shop in a cart. They were solid enough for now.

20190712_124321%20%282%29-L.jpg

Opened the plasma cutter too. There have always been a little air leak inside. I thought that it was a part of the design

It was a drop of solder that has made a small hole in the hose. Easy fix, I shortened it and jointed it back in to the fitting.

I did some maintenance for the welding cart too. It was my first tig welding project when I bought the welder. I designed it poorly and I had to lift the argon bottle in to the cart. With my back problems I had to make some changes.

Those polyurethane casters was turning to steel casters:lol: I sanded those smooth with air sander.

20190712_160036%20%282%29-L.jpg

I removed one brace out of the cart and now I can lift the argon bottle in from the back.

20190721_135131%20%282%29-L.jpg

There's a good place for the cart to be. There's two power outlets ready on the wall for the machines. Welding machine is also on my right side for easy access when I sit by the welding table.
Plasma cutter hoses are long enough so I can cut stuff outside of the workshop. It makes a big mess without a plasma cutting table. I have to make one of those some day:thumbup:

Have a great day everybody:beer:

Excellent organization and cleanliness. Should make a pleasure to work there.

Thanks Boosted1! I think it really is a pleasure to continue my car and motorcycle projects when my workshop is ready to go:thumbup:

They use snuff in Finland?

Swedish snus is pretty popular here. I quit smoking over ten years ago. When I had my worst back pain I started using snus. I should quit that too, it's a bad habit.
You can't even buy snus from Finland, we have to get it from Sweden.
I'm not even sure that is the snuff same thing that snus. Snus I use is like dip in packs. What is that stuff you snif in your nose? is that snuff? Im confused:lol:

This has been my workhorse for over ten years. I bought it used and it's a very basic model. Esab Lka 240 with ten amp settings, stepless wire weed adjustment and a spot welding/tagging feature.

Previous owner messed up the covers with somekind of pickling acid. The paint is coming off and there's rust under the paint.

There was something wrong with the wire feed adjuster. I measured the potentiometer leads and it was broken. It wasn't working all the time. I replaced it with a new one and now it's working great.

Never done a bodywork for a mig welder before

I'm not sure is it a crime to paint Esab welder red:bounce: But that's all I had. (and I'm not a big fan of yellow)

I had some problems with the spray gun and ended up with some orange peel. I painted the parts outside so there's a couple mosquitoes as well

I guess the paint job is good for a mig welder. I painted the plastic parts with black texture paint. I wish I had used a bigger nozzle for that, but it came out okay.

Tested the gas hose and made some improvements. I'm using co2 for mig welding. That's cheap and I can fill the bottle close to my workshop. There's a fire extinguisher service near by.

Placed some rubber mat under the gas bottle.

20190721_173314%20%282%29-L.jpg

I've been eagerly wanting to fabricate something, not just cleaning the workshop all the time. So I made a cable holder for the mig welder.

Made some "racing holes" with my home made punch and hole flange tool.

T-handle, you are doing an amazing job on the shop. Each step makes sense and ties in with the previous step. I shouldn't be looking because it makes me want to re-do so much I thought I finished.

Great work on the mig. Very tidy place you have there. Cheers, Mike

Thanks Mike! Looks almost like new now and welds great

I found more welding tools and had to re-think the pegboard. I made a pegboard size area on to my welding table with tape. Then I played some tool-tetris how to fit all in. Much easier then on the wall.

Now they are all there (I hope:lol:) for easy access when I'm welding.

I test fitted my welding table on place. Fits nice and I can reach and operate things when sitting by the bench. My welding table is unfinished still. I have some improvement plans for it:bounce:

Hello everybody! Last weekend I had my first summer flu. I've never had any issues with allergies or flu in summer times. My eyes and nose is bleeding like hell. Not nice at all. Now I understand people with allergies better.

I thought that I'll never get any problems with pollen allergy. I've spend a lot of time in forest and fields when I was younger. Even my first name Tapio means the God of forest according to Finnish mythology. I guess the magic is disappearing:lol:

I managed to do something in the workshop.

I did some service for my oxy-asetylene set.

I cleaned everything, changed all the seals and fittings. Pressure tested the hoses, backfire safety valves and other valves. Now I can see thru the gauge lenses and all the parts are ready for work. I went thru my torch set too. Cleaned the nozzles inside and outside.

Now my welding gear is ready for work.
Next step is the most important one. My extinguishing gear. The fire extinguishers are now serviced and I placed them for easy access near the door.

My bottle holder was looking little sad. Some wire wheeling and touch of signal red made it looking better.

I also added some safety signs to my door for visitors. Also a reminder for myself to wear safety glasses and check the gas bottles when I close the workshop. I think they are in order of importance from top to bottom

I have to figure out a place for my oxy-asetylene set so I have access to my cabinet. I forgot that I had it when I made the plan

Have a great day everyone:thumbup:

"T" I absolutely love your welding station. It is very well lit and tool accessible
I assume those tubes hold your welding rods.
I need to rethink my welding space. Thanks for your help

Thanks DynoDave:thumbup:

Just read your thread again. Very nice shop you build there:thumbup: Any pics inside the shop?

Thank you. No interior pics. After the economy took a dump in 2008, I just never had the money to get back to it. My wife and I worked for the same company for 30 years, and it just kept downsizing and offshoring until we both had to find new jobs in the last 12 months. Sad really. But, we both found good jobs making more money, so I'm hoping to restart work on the place before this winter. It will be hard to do now, as it's pretty full inside!

T! Your space is great! I’m glad that I found your garage thread and enjoyed reading my way through it. I seem to always forget to take pictures before and during, but you do such a good job.

Thanks for sharing and I’ll be watching for more posts!

Thanks Don:thumbup:

I tried to make it so that I can reach everything from my welding stool. I'm mostly welding smaller stuff by the bench. Yes I made those tubes for welding rods. There's some story about the tubes in post #129.

Thank you Don and have a great day

Okay DynoDave. That's a sad thing to hear. After 30 years it must be heartbreaking to find another job. I feel you with the money issue. After my back went out of order my incomes dropped seriously. I'm clad that I have savings and my wife have a full time job.

We all love our workshops but family comes first

I'm glad that you both find jobs and you are restarting your workshop  If it's packed you just have to do one corner at the time.

I have a same kind of situation. When I take a picture of well organised corner there's a tons of stuff on pallets behind my back:lol: Actually it's satisfying to get one corner ready at the time vs trying to handle the whole chaos at once.

Have a great day DynoDave

Thanks for stopping by Unruh

I take a lot of pictures so I can remember how to but everything back together:lol: Sometimes projects takes a bit of time so it's good to have some memory backup. I'm not so good of a storyteller so I post a lot of pictures:lol:

Have a great day:beer:

It was disappointing to watch the company slowly go downhill. But we're both better off for being out of there. I just finished my first week at the new place, and I'm pretty happy.

The "...picture of well organized corner there's a tons of stuff on pallets behind my back..." comment gave me a good laugh. That's how it will be for me too for sure.

And you could see the train wreck coming...of me stuffing things into the place before it was done...from a mile away. I KNEW I would do it, so I PROMISED, SWORE, was totally DETERMINED that I was not going to move one single thing in there until it was done!!! :lol_hitti

But yeah, pulling wire, insulating, finishing the storage in the trusses...all things that can be done in a populated space. When it's time to address the floor, I'll probably rent one of those storage containers they bring to your house. Things like the 4 post lift, and big upright compressor...I'm not moving them more than once.

That sounds like a plan DynoDave:beer: I have my 700ft2 gold storage full of stuff. Projects and materials. I have to clear it before winter for my project cars. Time goes by too fast tough:lol:

Not so much QST this week. I had to do three "workstations" for my kids, before the school starts again. And fixed all the bikes. There was a lot of work, but I managed to get those done. And even two days before deadline

Now I'm back at the workshop. I started to do some cad-work for my welding table vol 2.

Saturday is a house cleaning day. I figured that the kitchen knives are dull again. Great way to avoid vacuuming and spend some QST

Wednesday I went to dentist for inspection. Everything was okay and the dentist had some time left, so he decided to pull out my last wisdom tooth :shocking:

One and a half hour later it was separated from my jaw :D

Have a great weekend everyone:beer:

Dustless sanding update.

I've been using this Rupes orbital sander about four years since I fixed it. I saved it and other tools from my painters trash pile:lol: It's still available and the price is about 300€. I guess it's pretty good quality brand.

It was well used and doesn't orbit anymore with air pressure. So I took it apart. There was some oil and hard dust inside.
The air drum was full of scratches so I lapped it with brake caliper lapping tool.

There was some wear in the rotating fins also and one was missing. I made a new one from bakelite phenolic sheet. I also sanded those straight with fine sand paper on a surface plate.

New bearings and some cleaning and the sander was ready for work. I bought a 6" Abranet sanding pad for it. Only problem is that some of those dust holes is too far from the dust collector head.

user380465_pic95803_1565970499%20%282%29-L.jpg

It works great now and I've been using it a lot. One thing I noticed that the 6" abranet discs are expensive in here. About 3€ a piece. So I ordered a 5" disk and a padsaver for it.

Not so much difference in size, but the discs are a lot cheaper. Now all the dust extraction holes are inside the dust collection head

I ordered a pack of disks from aliexpress. By the way, Mirka is a Finnish company but you can by original disks a lot cheaper from China:lol: I have to order some more. I thought that they were fake disks.

Pack of 50 costs about 17€ there. I'm saving a lot of money for beer now:lol:

Have a great weekend everyone:beer: I'm going to sand something now:rocker:

Love the fold out stool on your welding table. That's definitely going on my to do list. When I saw it, I thought I might try changing it to an articulating arm so you would have more range of movement. Could double the available length and fold in half to go under bench, and have a friction lock on the center joint. Mike

Thanks Mike:thumbup:

That fold out stool is a nice add to the welding table. The stool part spins around so it's easy to orient your position when welding. Double joint would be a high tech model  Please tell me how it works so I can copy that:lol:

Here's a better picture

There is a lot of models. Google swing out stool:thumbup:

I like these vintage models.

I used to had a work stool with wheels, but every time you try to move it there's a welding gable or something else under the wheel  So this is a very good improvement:beer:

I've been busy with other stuff so not much workshop time in past couple weeks. I've adjusted my bicycle so I can take some long rides. I have to get some building material in my back joints. No running allowed and walking is boring
My old Crescent was pretty bad shape so I cleaned/replaced all the bearings. I disassembled the back hub gearing (7speed) and dam! that was a puzzle to but back together  I'm waiting new wheels I ordered and then it will be ready for sweat:lol:

I started to improve my welding table. I had these 10mm steel plates laser cut almost two years ago. We did a group order on the local workshop forum.

20190820_193904%20%282%29-L.jpg

My current table is 1x2 meters. The plates are 1,2x0,8 meters so I have to modify my current table. New size will be 0,8x2,4 meters. There was a vote for the size and we decided to go with the pallet size for shipping. I was voting for a 1x1meter plate:lol_hitti

Plates has 16mm holes on 50mm pattern. There are commercial clamps for 16mm hole, but I'm going to do some own hold down parts when I get my lathe going again.

There's some warp on the plates after laser cut. Not much, about 1mm worst. So I started with stiffening ribs under the plates.

20190820_203148%20%282%29-L.jpg

20190820_203159%20%283%29-L.jpg

I went to my storage to find some suitable steel for the ribs and find these left over column base plates I saved from a scrap pile. The size is perfect 10x100x800mm.

20190820_193846%20%283%29-L.jpg

20190820_204840%20%282%29-L.jpg

I checked the straight side and marked it. I'm going to do some slots so there will be a gross pattern in the bottom side so the plate would be flat. I'm going to connect those two plates with the ribs underside.

Have a great week everybody:thumbup:

When I was working with my bike, I used a lot of my hex and torx t-handle tool sets. I have those in a drawer. All the markings are worn out from the small ones, so I picked a wrong size a lot. I decided to do a stand for them.

20190830_154041%20%282%29-L.jpg

I had a 40x40mm end caps, so I picked a 40x40 pipe for the stands.

20190830_171513%20%282%29-L.jpg

I did some plans and figured out the spacing, then drilled the holes with 0,5mm clearence.

20190830_201404%20%282%29-L.jpg

I did the stands from 1,25mm sheet metal. Rounded the corners and tig welded those on to the tube.

After the stands were cool down I cleaned and painted them. I had some red and black spray paint so red it was:lol:
I glued some black fabric tape on to the stand, to protect the paint from the heads of the tools. I labeled the correct size too, so I don't have to guess it anymore

20190831_185103%20%282%29-L.jpg

Speed clamp was a good tool to press the end caps on place. I glued some felt to the bottom to protect the countertop.

I moved my files and steel brushes up on the pegboard and there's a nice spot for the hex and torx sets. It's nice to take the whole set to the "job site"

Those t-handle sets are some cheap ones and I have been dreaming to get some Bondhus sets:thumbup:

Have a great weekend everybody:beer:

Winter is coming soon and part of my projects are outside under a tarp. Sunday morning I started to clean my storage.
There was a ton of stuff on pallets and crates. Almost so much that when you open the door, things fall down on you like an avalanche:lol:

I started cleaning and forget to take any pics from the before situation. Here's some pics from the other end.

20190902_143247%20%282%29-L.jpg

20190902_143313%20%282%29-L.jpg

I had some old shelving that I saved from my friends trash pile. I cleared a section of the floor and carried all the stuff outside to have some space to move. Placed the shelving on to the wall and started filling them up. No specific order, Just to get some space to move. I also hanged all the gardening tools on to the wall.

20190902_143254%20%282%29-L.jpg

20190902_143326%20%282%29-L.jpg

Then I cleaned my way to the back wall. I had some old racks for steel that used to be in my old workshop. I placed them on to the back wall so I can storage some 6 meters long steel.
I worked late and noticed that it's dark in the storage. Next day I bought four 20w led lights and placed them on the main beam. Looks a lot better now.

Looks better now and I can do some proper organizing. I have a lot of car and motorcycle parts in the workshop, that I have to place in here. Also all my steel, stainless and aluminum sheets. I think I can fit two cars, atv and a lawn mower there too. It's going to be tight:lol:

I have another smaller storage that I have to clean too. That one is for firewood, snow moving stuff and all my carpenter tools:lol:

Too much stuff, or too small space. Too small space:lol:

Today my back hurts and it was raining, so it was a electronics day in the workshop.
I repaired my wife's favorite hair curling iron and tree pairs of headphones.

20190904_183733%20%282%29-L.jpg

Couple wires was hardened and broken, New wires and some soldering and it works great again. Headphones had a broken wires too. I have to order some 90 degrees plugs so they last longer.

It's nice to fix family stuff, Now I have a permission to buy new tools again:lol:

Have a great week everybody

Hi everybody! Not so much shed time in a month.

I have been busy with cleaning two storage areas and the yard. I manage to push all my projects in the big storage.

There's my wife's Mazda 1800 and my squarebody project. There's also about 15 moped projects and ton of parts

Smaller storage is ready for firewood. I have to pick up a 8m3 load of firewood from my friend. Then the winter can come:beer:

20190928_170056%20%282%29-L.jpg

I've been struggling with my Gopro hero 5. I haven't used it for several moths and when I used it the video quality was very bad. I bought new memory card but still the video quality is grainy. I tried a lot of different settings but no luck. If you guys have some fixing tips I'll be very happy

I can't use 4K because my computer keeps on crashing if I try to edit 4K quality. I guess I have to update my computer next.

Have a great weekend everybody:beer:

I've been busy with many tasks. The workshop time has been limited and the weather is getting colder, but now I'm prepared for winter:thumbup:

20191016_201217%20%282%29-L.jpg

I have some things to do still, like check my John Deere for snowplowing. Antifreeze, oils, lights etc. I have to fix my tractors exhaust also. There's a crack in the exhaust pipe and some of the smoke is coming in to the cabin..

Then it's time to spend time in the workshop a LOT
I have to modify my welding table and then the welding area is ready.
Then it's time to start the machining area. I have been planning how to fit all the machines so that they are nice to use.
Also trying to avoid all the machine market websites that I don't buy more machines:lol:

Have a great week everybody and be careful.. there's some strange creatures moving around.. I saw this yesterday in the house:scared:

Scary looking creature :wtf: I hope that encounter with that creature was friendly.

That's a really spacious storage, everybody should have something like that...
