T,

Awesome job! Nice work!

BTW, the Legos have shipped, from China!:headscrat Told the wife, we might have ordered fancy pictures, not Legos....we'll see....

Thanks Mark! Hey at least something is coming, might be usefull:thumbup:

Could be some of those Lego alternatives made in China. Those are not bad at all.

Love the apron. While sewing may be not be a hot topic on here, I think it is a good skill to have that can help bring projects to another level.

Thanks mfg0772!
Yeah it's a good skill to have. I've been lurking Zepher11's mastering sewing with his war-Jeep restorations. Amazing work his doing!

There's a squarebody seats waiting me in the storage. Maybe I can knock some cool seat covers myself someday.

Badass T! I have been wanting to learn sewing. My mom gave me her machine. I also bought the thread and new needles. But I have just putting off learning. Now I'm going to have to learn.

Bret

You have the machinery ready to go, that's great! An apron is a great piece to start, I was thinking a needle pillow first but went straight to an apron:lol:

Fabric, thread, few Youtube tutorials, golden tips from the wife and you are ready to go:thumbup:

Very cool!

My Mom and Grandma both insisted I learn how to sew growing up. While I haven't done it in years, I'm sure it wouldn't take too long to knock the rust off.

You nailed it on the shoulder straps - wide material for the strap making an "X" across your back. I spent way too much time wearing aprons that hung around my neck at the machine shop - those aprons felt really heavy at the end of a 12 hour shift.

Thank you Sir!

Sewing is nice skill to have, it's refreshing to do something totally different for a while.
I agree with the straps. Too heavy load and thin straps gives me headaches.

I had to move to a hip style toolbelt after wearing a tool vest for ten years because of migraines. There was sometimes 15 kilos of tools and nails on the pockets when I was roofing houses:lol:

Hmmm...sewing now?

T', by any chance are you related to Gregor (aka sakurama)? I'm starting to notice uncanny thread resemblances in interest factors.

Gregor, Maybe a brother from another mother, and father:lol:

I guess we and majority here shares a vast interest of cool things that includes tools and making stuff.

I have this philosophy, "If a human made it, I can make it too or at least learn how to do it" so I'm in to almost anything related to mechanics and making stuff.

I'm taking inspiration everywhere like a sponge, Sometimes I have so much ideas in my head that it's ready to explode. I wish I could be just collecting stamps or something:lol:

Yes wow so many skills. And not just doing it but doing it well. I dabble in sewing for automotive upholstery so I have some idea of how hard it is to make it look nice.

So lets go the other way, what can you not do?

Thanks Rattle_snake! Yes it's hard to do nice if you don't have any experience.

All the small tricks are learned when you have to do things multiple times.
I hope that the next is even better and all the sewing lines are straight:thumbup:

Very nice apron, when can I get mine? :p Your attention to detail is impressive.

Jay

Thanks Jay!

Yours is rolled on the piece of fabric in your local fabric store. Just go in from the door and then left, there it is:lol_hitti

We have had a lot of snow in last couple weeks. No sunrises here but some pretty cool snow overhangs:lol:

Those lego kits seem impossibly cheap. I don't know if there's a catch but I clicked on your "beast" link and hit buy. Might go back for more.

EDIT: oh, just read the scam suspicion above. I missed that.

Mmmm, so yesterday I received a pair of "Ray Ban" sunglasses from China, which I never ordered. No Lego kits.

Hoping credit card company will cover it. Live and learn.

:lol_hitti We got the same pair of imitation "Ray Bans" ourselves. The wife emailed them back and they actually responded, asking for pictures. We don't expect to hear back from them again. She also reported the fraud to our bank, they are pursuing getting our money back. T, you were so right about them being ridiculously low priced to be real. The wife definitely ignored that old adage.....:shocking:

That's a bummer. I red something like this when Googled the website. It's unbelievable how these guys sleep at night. Imagine kids, (or even more of us adults) waiting their Legos and they never arrive..

I checked the website and the three days only sale is still going.. Don't know where to report this kind of scammers. I bet the real Lego is fighting back somehow.

Great way to avoid being scammed is to use Paypal only, I wish you guys get your money back!

Edit. (I asked the moderators to remove the link so nobody else won't get scammed)

That is a bummer about the Lego’s. I kinda had the same thing happen a bit ago. I bought a portable laser engraver. About 4 months later I received a cheap looking ring in the mail from the company.

I use https://www.trustpilot.com/ & https://www.scamadviser.com/

They saved my money a couple of times when my greed was stronger than my logic.

There was a place called https://www.selvedica.com/ (it's gone now I think) that had a Castle 100 pocket hole cutter for $66.00 ...Scamadvisor said "nope" (<---paraphrased) so I emailed them:

That's sad, did you get your money back? Laser engraver would be a nice add to the workshop. I've been dreaming about 3D printer, not sure is there any actual use for it but could be nice toy to play around the workshop.

My $15 welder never arrived. Paypal refunded my money

It was for the best, Bob.

No! I was pretty excited to get the portable engraver, but lesson learned. I agree that a 3D printer would be a great addition!

Nice work on the apron! I think knowing how to change the lower string is the trick when you can say you know how to sew ;) I've done some things for the kids, a car interior etc. It's a good skill to have.

Thought I'd let you know that I'm still peeking in on you

Don

Nice to know Don:thumbup: Some of my projects are in hold for a moment. I had to move some machinery so I can drive vehicles in. For now there's no room to rebuild the lathe.
The winter has been freezing and we have to "melt" our daily driver time to time:lol: I guess I need a bigger garage.. I have one interesting project in my head though..

I've been lurking your thread too, The clock is going to be epic!

Thanks Matias! Yes the lower thread is the devil's work:lol: I've been searching a used industrial sewing machine. Those are pretty cheap sometimes. Would be great for bigger projects.

Just watched the Lego YouTube video... that cracked me up! Nice job!

...slurp...

Haha, same. I guess Lego people love coffee

Thanks guys! Some heavy drinkers on the video, I guess that's why they are yellow:lol:

It sure was fun video to film and very hard to edit, I have to practice my timing a lot.

Here's my movie set-up

20210213_084554%20%282%29-L.jpg

The shopmanager had ideas for full movie but I had to hold him down:lol:

I have to learn how to take good photos first, I think I need to by a macro-lens so I can get the pictures focused properly. Lot to learn so little time:lol:

Have a nice weekend everybody!

..slurp..

Thanks for stopping by Ed! Glad you like'd my thread. It's very hard to write English fluently about my projects so I add a lot of pictures:lol:

The weather has been pretty cold in here and we had a lot of snow. I've been mostly plowing snow for two weeks.

The overhangs were over a meter so I went to the roof and cleaned the roof from snow. The roofs are calculated to hold about 300 kilos/square meter here. I have few places where the roof collects a lot of snow so I sleep better if I clean those spots ones in a season.

That is a lot of snow. It looks very cozy, though.

Do you ever have issues with "ice dams" on the roof, or is that not a problem with the way it's constructed?

For all the work done on your shop, your house is quite beautiful, too.

I'll just add, I appreciate you taking the extra effort to share your shop and projects in a 2nd language so people like myself can enjoy. I was just going back through your thread this morning and it's incredible what you've done. Your English is perfect and has been super easy to follow along with the whole way. But, please, keep including all the pics, it's one of the things that makes your thread great!

I have an affinity to LEGOs and have a small collection of the Technics kits, so I had to watch the LEGO movie. That was great! Indiana's hat falling down had me scratching my head for awhile... then is all made sense. LOL.

Great shop and keep up the awesome work!

Thanks a lot Nick!

No ice dam problem, It's just how the wind blows when snowing. On the other side of the roof has only about four inch snow.
The construction code is a bit overkill here and there's a ton of insulation in our buildings. I have a 300mm (1ft) rock wool in the walls and 600mm (2ft) on the roof, So no heat leaks from the roof.

I have a lot of construction pics from my house when I build it but they are in a broken hard drive and I haven't fix it yet. I have to do it sometime and make a post from building my house and workshop. If I get the hard drive working again. I should keep multiple backups.

Thanks for stopping by Nick!

I can only imagine how long it took to make that video.
Nice job.

Thanks Boosted1! Yes it took some time, Biggest task was sorting the Legos, then the woodworking, The stop motion was the easy part:lol:

light and wood exterior looks amazing <3

Thanks Chris John! And welcome to Garage Journal!

Great news Mr Gearhead! I have witnessed one miracle back in 2006 when Finland won the Euro-vision song contest. I saw it from Tv so I'm not still absolutely sure:lol:

Great work from your bank and great reminder for all of us to do some back checking when something feels too cheap:thumbup:

Tapio, we have only stepped off a boat for a day in Finland back in '98. Being 75% Scandinavian I'm embarrassed to say I was unaware your region hosts the Air World Air Guitar Championships. An Air Guitar is in my wheelhouse and in my youth even put on a show (prop guitar needed for obvious reason).

The wall

Reading wonderful threads and checking the Pinterest site got me thinking, I don't have enough wall space. I'm not admitting that I have too much tools.. No way.

So I walked around my workshop and found an empty spot..

20200104_201121%20%282%29-L.jpg

Two to three square meters completely useless space next to the stairs and my "kitchen" area. So between the post on the left (not showing on the picture) and the fridge is going to be my new "wall".

It includes a woodworking tool storage, clock tower/notice wall, foyer area, work clothes storage, work shoe storage, kitchen with fridge and microwave, stairs and a secret hiding place if we get an invasion from space someday (fits one small person only)

I did some plans and started working.

IMG_1147%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1156%20%282%29-L.jpg

I made the studs and glued the bottom plates? on the floor. I let the glue dry for overnight and then build the rest of the frame. We use this kind of wood for inside wall framing. It's cut from a giant piece of plywood and the studs are super straight. Nice stuff to work with.

IMG_1173%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1170%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1167%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1166%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1165%20%282%29-L.jpg

Then it was time to cover the other side with particle board. I use particle board cos it's cheap, stronger then drywall and easier to get nice painted wall then plywood or obs. You can also hang some light stuff on it without packing behind the board.
I used plywood for the woodworking tool wall if I hang some heavy stuff on it and it will be covered with pegboard anyway so no painting issues.

I did some electric work too. I added couple outlets and a switch for the "dreaming" lights. The current switch is now hard to get if it's dark.
Now I can decide at the door am I going to work or "daydream" in the workshop.

From the old memory I run the wiring thru the stud in height of 666mm. I used to do that so I don't accidentally screw anything in to the wires when it's covered with a board. And usually you don't mount anything so low. Doesn't quite work as a reminder for inches:lol:

IMG_1175%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1186%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1188%20%282%29-L.jpg

I did my "clock tower" part on the table and lifted the whole piece on it's place. I have the clock face and a plan but I think I'll post more about the clock when it's done.

IMG_1193%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1195%20%282%29-L.jpg

So here is the woodworking tool/kitchen side ready for filler work and paint.

IMG_1198%20%282%29-L.jpg

Here is the foyer/work clothes storage side.

IMG_1200%20%282%29-L.jpg

IMG_1203%20%282%29-L.jpg

And here is the clock tower/notice wall side.

IMG_1202%20%282%29-L.jpg

Now I'm going to do some covering for the floors and go thru my screws with a putty knife before filler and paint. That's an old habit too. I used to have a great painter friend when I used to build houses. He was always whining about not flush screws, so we did a deal. Every screw that's not flush or under is a can of beer for the painter, and if there's non, I have a twelve back of beer:lol:

So here's my wall project current state. Have a great day everyone!

Holy smokes Bob! That's some serious rock'n'roll attitude on the pick:rocker:

The Air guitar Championship final is arranged about 8 kilometers from my house. It's a great event for us (me) who can't play real guitar:lol:
I have to admit that I'm a air guitar hero too (alcohol increases the level) but haven't never participated the competitions. Great stuff Bob and thanks for the picture, It's awesome:rocker:

I am envious of your building code standards, here in Australia we have very poor standards when it comes to insulation, as in, we usually have none, wooden framed, brick built, if your lucky some insulation wool in the wall and gyprock on the inside. single glazed window panes too. Mostly because its just very hot here.

But in winter when it gets to a freezing 0°C here, its extremely cold in the house. We will have the ducted heater on sometimes for 12-14 hours a day, we have one of the worlds most expensive electricity prices, so its not uncommon to get $1000+ quarterly power bills.

Double glazed windows are extremely expensive here too!

Rudi.

The wall is an excellent idea. You can never have enough wall space! Looking forward to the end product. BTW, good deal with the painter. At least you remember to flush the screws when you do them!

Great thread and wonderful content. You do keep busy!

Thanks for sharing your shop and what you do.

All the best!

Thanks for stopping by Odis!

The wall is a great idea! I love the idea of the clock tower and notice board. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

Thanks Nick! It took some planning to fit all the functions in small space:lol: My memory is good but really short so it's nice to have a whiteboard for notes. I have to write everything down or I'm lost:lol:

Rudi.

Thanks for stopping by Rudi! Wow! Here you could end up in jail building houses with out insulation:lol:
I'm just saying that in some point the extra insulation is not worthy anymore. It's a bit like tuning your engine, some point the invested money doesn't give you the mount of horsepower you wished. Thicker insulation needs thicker foundation and thicker framing etc. I think we are in good point right now.

We have about sixty summer days so no heat issues here, I have a cooler in my house thou because it's easy and cheap to install if you have geothermal heating like I have.
I have triple glazed windows with argon gas inside the cavities, the glass is 5mm tempered glass with sunlight film on outer glass. Not cheap but this is what I had to buy to get large windows on my house:lol:

There's a U-value of the house we have to follow to get the permit. It's a lot of paper work and planning. But I'm not complaining, the electrical bills is not bad at all. 80€ summer to 250€ winter per month, And that's all not just heating.

The wall is an excellent idea. You can never have enough wall space! Looking forward to the end product. BTW, good deal with the painter. At least you remember to flush the screws when you do them!

Thanks Matias! I'm happy how it's turning out and not having the maze effect:lol: Yes it can be annoying to do the filler work if the screws are up. And I did get a punch of beer from the painter sometimes:lol:

The wall update

The wall is painted, I did two rounds with filler and sanded between, One layer of primer and then two layers of red, or is this a burgundy red, anyway it's a mix of my two favorite colors, red and brown:lol:

Then I started the clock, I made this clock few years ago and it was mounted on to the back wall of my old workshop set up. I took the old clock frame apart and saved the front face. It's a vinyl print from a Mohawk gasoline sign I found from the internet. It's glued on a piece of clear plexiglass. I had a led strip in the case so it's a kind of a fake light sign.

The clock was too big for my new clock tower so I had to take about 20cm out of it.

IMG_1158%20%282%29-L.jpg

I made a quick guide so it came round. I hope mister Mohawk doesn't mind that I drilled a 8mm hole in his ear.

I made the hole on my clock tower and thought it would look better if it's a bit recessed on to the wall. I have a plan but it keeps changing depending the mood and the materials I have on hand. I have a 3mm plastic cell board so I use that on the frame. So I made the hole 6mm bigger.

IMG_1179%20%282%29-L.jpg

I painted the board and saw it on size (same size as the clock face)

Then I cut the strips of cell board and it bend nice on the clock frame. I glued it on and used some staples too. I made twelve supports so the clock face can be screwed on these.

I glued and screwed the supports from the bottom side. I'm not sure what kind of number indicators i'm going to do. Numbers or just some simple lines. I think the lines would be more "art deco" style.

The led strip is then glued on to the bottom corner of the circle. I had some led strip but it had gone yellowish so I have to get new one. I was thinking a white strip about 4000k or whiter, or maybe a rgb-strip to get the disco going:lol:

Nelli is supervising the progress and she's super sharp when there's cookies on the table.

Well that's all for now about the wall project.

There's one new acquisition in the workshop that me and Mr Skeleton are pretty stoked:lol:

The wall update

I bought a five meter strip of white 12 volt led strip. I think the color is good for this application. Quick test before gluing on place.

The transformer I had was okay so I glued it after decreasing. I think the spacing went pretty good by luck.

And it works. I've had some bad experiences with 3M tape, we'll see if the strip stays put.

I made the hour indicators from sheet metal. Double sided tape to other side and they are ready for black paint. I painted the pointers also.

The indicators covers up the old mounting holes, I had to but two for the noon.

I mounted the clock frame on to the tower. I made a inspection hole on the middle so I can change the battery and turn to summertime from the backside without taking the whole thing apart. I mounted a ventilation cover to the backside on the top of the hole.

Mr Mohawk is now ready on his tower to show me the time. I have the hardest part left, I'm making a steel angle trim for it. We'll see how that works out, I think few practice pieces are expected.

(Note to self! The clock face is screwed on the frame under indicators two, six and ten) I'm going to forget it anyways so if I have to take it apart I can check the mounting screw locations from here:lol:

That's all for now. Next thing is to make trims to corners and to the bottom of the wall. Have a nice weekend guys!
