I have a 40wx60L shop with a white metal ceiling that's 13' tall. I just put up 6 - 8' T5 fixtures from Home depot with 5K HO bulbs from (1000bulbs.com). This was just for the front half of the shop (2 rows of three) and I can't believe the light they put out. Awesome! :rocker:

I had a gay-raj built using T5 lights and they were bright but turn on the radio and all there was was static, electromagnetic interference or RFI. There are 2 types of ballasts used, commercial and residential I learned. The residential are shielded and the commercial are not, I went round and round with the electrician who installed them until I got to be such a pain in his *** (over a year) he finally ordered and swapped out the commercial ballasts with us each paying half. It will or should say on the ballasts which they are, a quick check with a radio will tell you...that is if it matters to you. Just an FYI

Semantics, please.

Guys, there are T5's and there are T5HO's. Both are very popular. To avoid confusion lets use the right lingo. Imagine if someone takes your recommendation and asks for the wrong thing.

You used T5HO, not T5.

Not trying to be nit-picky or ****. Just trying to be proactive.
Thanks

I believe the $69 fixtures I got from Home Depot were T5HO. I believe I stated where I got the bulbs. 5K brightness output. I'll try the radio trick tonight.

The downside of using T5HO is that they don't spread the light around as well as multiple T8 fixtures. You get a lot of shadows.

They look like they are installed dead over the center of the bays. Does't seem like the best place for them. I would prefer them between the vehicles so the light can directly reach the floor.

Congratulations, you've succeeded in buying the wrong fixtures for the application and mount them in the wrong locations. You've achieved more shadows than you ever wanted right where you don't want them. These errors are indeed your own.

I couldn't get the pics to open but the only thing that really matters is whether the lights and the placement work well for you.

G-ride...
what are your intentions with the space? Storage? Auto repair? Something else?
Also,
what are your plans for the walls? Any coatings or coverings on them?

That's an old saying we use around here, apparently not used everywhere. What usually follows my statement is "They probably call you **** Ed most of the time".
LOL, If you expect a pat on the back for doing it wrong, you've come to the wrong place. Someone had to say it.

"Doing it wrong" is an opinion, not a fact and serves no purpose, IMO.:D
Depends who's making the statement. Unless the OP specializes in automotive roof detailing, it's wrong. The purpose of pointing that out is to learn from others mistakes before you make them yourself. Rather than acknowledging that he could have placed them better, the OP dismissed Charles (in GA)'s non-confrontational advice with "To each his own".

Point well taken, I'll remember that and will not refer to you as Richard Edward in the future.

Someones pantyhose is in a bunch here.

Jeez, didn't know there was rules and regulations in shop lighting that must be followed that makes what the OP did wrong.

"to each his own" there is nothing wrong with saying this.

Point well taken, I'll remember that and will not refer to you as Richard Edward in the future.

Still a **** comment posted by Platonic Solid, could of been nicer about pointing out why it should have been done different and what fixtures would of worked better. If it works for the OP's needs and he is satisfied with it job well done, it is the OP's garage not yours! So get off your high horse Platonic Solid.

Personally from the pictures that would work just fine for what I would ever do in my shop/garage and it looks good. Is this how I would do it, no but like the OP said "to each his own"

Dang who let the warm fuzzy police out. My comments aren't hash, just factual. I didn't call the OP names or attack him personally (unlike the responses I'm getting in return). I pointed out the facts, which happen to be unpleasant in his case. He can chose to learn from it or blow it off. He obviously chose the latter. Makes no difference to me.

My garage is 24x24. I have (4) 4ft fixtures along the front of the garage wired to (1) switch and (4) 4ft fixtures running along the back wall wired to another switch.
I also have (2) 8ft fixtures dead center wired to a 3rd switch. The fixtures in the middle of the garage I use as I enter the garage. The 2 sets of 4ft fixtures I use as needed.
My garage is bright with no shadows at all

The reason I stated "Point well taken" after reading your comment I was thinking about it I believe you are correct. If I were standing in the OP's garage I would probably say "Looks good, glad that works for you", but I'm not standing in his garage, I'm on a forum that will probably be read by hundreds of people, stating the facts as you saw them will probably be more helpful to more people. So I may have to change my user name.:D

I stopped by HD today, looking at the T5 and T8 fixtures to put in my PB, the fixtures they had on the shelf were all bent up, I wanted 5 total, they did not have 5 of either one, the nice lady said I could stop by two more stores to get 5, nope, not gonna happen. I asked her how these brand new fixtures got into the shape they were in? they're not that bad, she said. I left. I guess I will go with a 4'-6 lamp T8 fixture w/lamps for $92.00. I guess I will start with 5 of them and see how it works out.

...and your local electrical supply store probably had them on the shelf.

All in all, the 6 lamp T8 fixture is a legitimate contender. Normally, it's run with 2 ballasts for 3 lamps each. You should be able to dual switch it if you want to. Also, normally, the ballasts in those are what's called "high lumen" ballasts, which make the fixture deliver extra light from those high ceilings. Of course, without knowing exactly which one you picked out, I cant confirm that.
Good luck.

Sorry, been away from the forum. Very surprised with the comments I'm seeing. My pics don't do justice to the quality of the lighting in my shop. Sorry there is assholes on this site that ruin it for someone wanting to learn.I'm out.

My lights are placed in a similar pattern and they work fine for most of what I do. The only time I really need extra lighting is when I work under my vehicles and then I just whip out my halogen work light and I'm gtg.

Your claimed “desire to learn” requires an open mind that is willing to accept constructive criticism rather than dismissing it with “to each his own” and not running away when faced with the opportunity to actually learn something that may be contrary to your actions or beliefs. Most of all, it requires the ability to admit when you’ve made a mistake or at least acknowledge that their might be a better way.

Don't leave over one douche bag. I appreciate your sharing.
I think this thread has more than enough of it’s share of juvenile name calling.

No one is running away. No one made a mistake. It's simply one man's opinion vs. another man's. There's a dozen ways to skin a cat. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. Some people just can't keep their opinions to themselves, which is OK, let them hide behind their keyboard.:supergay:

T5 HO lights kick **** in my shop and that's all that matters to me.

I was on the fence between going with T8 vs. T5, but what made my decision easier was that 1000bulbs.com had the T5s priced right.

Now, lets see what the next smart *** comment is going to be.......I'm not seeing any pics of his or her garage????? OHHHHHHHHH Buurrrnnnnnn!!!!

one thing I learned is that the OP installed some lights in his garage and when he flipped the switch he was very happy, then when people told him he did it wrong he was still happy.

no matter how many people tell him that he should not be happy with his lights he is still happy with them.

then he is told that the reason he is happy with "wrong lights installed in the wrong place" it's because he doesn't have an open mind.

he could have wired up a porcelain fixture with a 50W incandescent bulb on a dimmer, if it he likes it I love it.

of course I only have a kindergarten level education, I was only taught the difference between nice and naughty
