Here is where I am at now. I built the temporary enclosure over the steps from the garage up into the trailer. I didn't like how it came out the first time where it met the garage wall under the eave of the garage, so I tore it out and redid it. I think it should be ok now. There is flashing up under the shingles where the roofs meet on both sides and it seems to be leak free so far. I'm going to run the fascia and soffit right up to the siding I cut to fit under the eave. When I build my house in a few years, the roof will be at the same height as the garage roof, so there will just a flat roof under the eave of both buildings over a small mudroom connecting the two.

I got my front door. I put it in for a test fit. I'm not going to install it until after I stain the siding. I have my garage door ordered. Lowes had pella for 15% off and I found a coupon code for another 10% off that. Got the 16x7 door for $400.

I'm going to stain it, put the trim up this weekend then do the fascia and soffits next month. Garage door will go in as soon as it arrives.

I need to run power to it soon too before the ground starts freezing up. Then lighting and an opener.

I started staining the siding. I wanted to start saturday, it was a nice day, but there was a chance of showers last night/this morning. So I built a workbench out of some of the leftover scraps and took the rest of the scraps to the transfer station and cleaned up. The legs of the bench come off and the whole thing can be stored in between the studs when I need to get a 3rd car in the garage if it snows.

Turned out to be just a little drizzle this morning and the sun came out by noon and dried up quick. I got 2 and a half walls stained. I got Behr premium solid stain. I went on real well, the color is a little more red than I wanted, I wanted more of a brownish red. But it's not bad.

Installed the man door tuesday, the locksets wednesday and trimed out the garage door jambs today.

Sometimes it snows in October, but usually it doesn't snow until November. Usually you can work outside until the dead of winter Jan and Feb. You get used to the cold, 20 is sweatshirt weather or t shirt if you are working hard. The cold doesn't really bother me until it's below zero. A few years ago we had a spell for over a week where it never went above zero. Lowest I have seen here so far is -21. We are so far north it gets dark at 4pm in the winter, so you can't do anything after work outside. Last winter there was so much snow you could stand on the piles and get on the roof of the blue trailer in the pics without a ladder.

I have to stain the back wall this Saturday. I'm going to make the 45 min run to home depot this weekend and get all the electric supplies and the soffit and fascia materials. I am going to run the electric line to it and wire lights and outlets Sunday.

Soffits and fascias go up next month. The garage door goes in as soon as it is shipped here. We can't use gutters here, they wouldn't survive the winter, the ice and snow would just tear them off.

That's about it for now, it's getting close.

Stained the back wall this afternoon. I ran out, I still have half a wall to go. I need to pick up another gallon. T1-11 really ***** up the stain, I used up a 5 gallon pail.

I have 3 light fixtures I brought with my when I moved. I put one up as a test and plugged into an extension cord. When it gets dark, I will decide how many I think I want. I'm thinking 5 or 6.

Then I'm off to Home Depot tonight.

I have power. I dug a trench 25 feet from the power pole to the garage. That is easier said than done on the Maine coast, our soil is hard and rocky. I can't even dig down with a shovel at first. I have to hammer in a bar first and break it up enough to get the shovel into the dirt. Put a 20 amp breaker in the panel on the pole and ran 12-2 direct burial cable to the garage. For now there are 2 outlets on the wall, a switch and 3 switch outlets in the ceiling for lights. I put up the 3 old T12 48" fixtures I had and 2 new T-8 48" fixtures. One of my old fixtures seems to have a bad ballast, one bulb flickers. I think I am going to get 2 more of the T8's to go on the back wall in place of the one bad one. I'll still need one unswitched outlet in the ceiling for the opener once the door goes up. I wasn't sure exactly where the opener will end up so I held off on that for now. It's plenty of light for me now, with 3 more tubes lit it will be almost overkill.

Now you can use the garage for it's intended purpose!

Staining? I just completed 2 coats on my 10x8 shed and one coat each on the two sheds at my parents. Still one more cost to go. Pressure washing beforehand definitely cleaned the mold and junk off them.

This is stored. The legs pull out of the bottom and all 3 parts tuck up into the wall studs. The top is in the cavity between the legs.

Work was slow today. I got home early and finished the staining on the back. Then put up the trim on the enclosure for the steps and caulked the trim around the door before it got dark. It was getting dark when I was caulking and I got a little sloppy with it around the man door. Luckily it's paintable, so a bit of touchup and it will be fine.

Yes the top sits in the second bay, the plywood is a slightly different shade.

The trim is just 1x2. There is drip edge at the top and caulked under the drip edge just in case since the roofs meeting like that isn't ideal. It's supposed to rain 5-8 inches here tomorrow, so if anything leaks it will be obvious.

I picked up 2 more T8 48" fixtures Friday and hung them on the back wall in place of the 1 T12 that had a bad ballast. Saturday morning I did the outside light. I got an old fashioned jelly jar light, it kind of goes with the rustic look of the garage. I thought about fascia and soffit trim a lot. Original plan was vinyl, but it really didn't go with the look I have going on, plus it priced out to over $500. So I decided to go with wood. The soffit is plywood cut into long strips and the fascia is 1x5 pine. Only cost me about $150. I got started on trimming it out this morning, but didn't get too far. GF's parent's water heater took a dump and I had to go replace it. I'll keep plugging away at the trim this week. I like the look of it so far. I'm going to paint it gloss white.

It seems you have made your life much more workable, Garage to house and house to garage in a covered snow free shelter will be worth every hour of work you put in. I was sick all week, I barely made it through the day at work, no way I was working on the garage after. I'm better now, but had to go in to work today to do snow tires, brakes, valve cover gaskets and an oil change on my GF's car this morning. I did get the trim up on the other half of the front this afternoon. I hopefully should get the rest of it done tomorrow. My garage door finally shipped out. I should have it next week.

What was the electrical box you mounted the jelly jar light fixture to? I tried to mount one of those outside my rear mandoor to the brick garage and can't find a box that is weathertight. The housing is bigger that the box all the way around.

I was thinking of a gloss white paint with a slight green tint to it. But I still may use a white stain. If I buy a gallon of the best paint I can, I think I should get 5 years before it needs repainting. Stain is I think 10.

I just took the fixture out of the box and wandered the electrical isle at home depot until I found a box that would fit. It's a round blue plastic box, I cut a round hole in the siding and it snaps in. The fixture base is about an inch wider than the box all around.

But after pricing around here, I am really leaning towards wood frame construction on a slab like you did. I would really like to do it myself, but there are certain things like trusses I have never done before. You ordered yours? From where?

I ordered trusses from my local building supply. The manufacturer is local here in Maine and just dropped them off directly to me.

You can order trusses from most any building supply and I think the big box lowes, home depot, menards etc stores can get them too. You just need to decide your span, overhang and pitch. Order in advance it's usually a few week wait for trusses. Raising trusses isn't so bad, set them on the sidewalls upside down and flip them in place. Temporarily block them as you go along, toe nail them into the top plate. If you live in a hurricane or tornado area or have zoning you probably will need hurricane ties on them to the top plate too. I did mine alone which was kind of a pain, but I got it done. With help it's easy.

Got most of the soffit and fascia done. Just a small section left and 2 corners and the whole garage is trimmed out.

I should finish that up this week. Hopefully the door arrives in time to install it and an opener next weekend. If not I will start painting the trim then.

Plus the roof slope of the garage and the house targeted in this pocket.They will collect water, as a result of damp and fungus (mold). As the wooden structure. Output will be difficult and costly.
I almost, funny. Between the garage and cellar. Only a distance of 1.5 meters from me. And plus this year I was lucky, the rain was the last time in June. And if the rains are often moss grows on the pavement at the corner of the basement and garage.

Oh you need an exterior box then, not a flush mount.

I am in the middle of a Forest and 4 miles (8KM) from the ocean. So moss and mildew have been a problem even before the garage. There isn't much I can do about it. I wash it off once a year. The blue trailer in the pictures will be gone in a few years and a new house will be built further away from the garage with a utility mudroom between the two.

Half of the year we have snow and ice so nothing grows.

I'm working on installing the garage door. Tomorrow I have to finish the back mount on one side and install the torsion spring. Then I'm going to put the opener up.

The door delivery was interesting. It showed up on a tractor trailer. The driver didn't want to try and back up the driveway, I don't really blame him. It's possible to do it, the roof truss delivery guy did it with a tractor trailer, but it was tricky. So we unloaded it on the side of the road off the liftgate into my truck. I have a 6.5' shortbed and it was a 16' door. That was interesting. I strapped it down and drove at a crawl up the driveway with 8' of door hanging off.

After tomorrow all that is left is painting the trim and the garage is done and ready for the winter.

I did my first work in the new garage this week. I installed the truck side parts for my new plow on the truck. Even without the door on, it sure was nice to work in a clean dry well lighted space.

I finished the door. The torsion spring came with a winder. It takes the place of the center bearing and you just wind it up with a drill. It was easy, no winding with pipes.

Then I got the opener mounted. That wasn't too hard either. I ran out of time to put the outlet in the ceiling. I have to do that tomorrow, for now it's just on an extension cord to test it out. It works well.

Everything came out real well. I got it done just in time, we had a bit of snow today. Just a quick flurry. It's 26 tonight, I had frost on the truck when I pulled it inside after finishing up. Hopefully I can paint the trim and wrap this project up next weekend.

I won't be able to paint my trim this weekend, it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow. Maybe next weekend will be better.

I did finish installing the plow on my truck. I got some of those movers dollies from Harbor Freight to store it on so I can roll it around off the truck.

I made a quick temporary coatrack from some scrap 2x6 and 20D nails. That way everyone can drop their coats and shoes before going inside. Eventually when I build my house there will be a mudroom in between the house and garage for coats and shoes etc and the garage will be strictly car stuff.

I got half of the trim painted today. I couldn't start until 10:30. It was in the 20s last night and it took a few hours for the frost to burn off and get above freezing. It eventually did make it to 50. Plus it's getting dark at 4:30 now. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so that is out. Hopefully I can finish it next weekend and do a few little touchups where I got white on the red stain.

I finished up painting the trim and did some touchups on the siding today. The garage is now officially finished. It ended up taking me 4 months. I'm happy with how it came out.
