I went to see about the tiny tach at your link, and while it looks like it will definitely do the job, one thing caught my attention - it says the non-replaceable battery will only last 5 years - does that mean you have to replace the tach every 5 years?

Just looked at there website that is what it looks like to me. Also says it is sealed to prevent moisture from getting into it.
If you're setting up the engine, as opposed to monitoring it while running, a photo tach is easy to use. With shaft end exposed, apply reflective tape, or paint a white dot. If the end is clean (shiny) paint it with flat black paint, then a dot of white.

ENM makes quality equipment. I use their hour meters on my yard equipment. I didn't get the 8 year life they specify on one of their vibration sensing hour meters. Changed to the old fashioned 12 volt hard wired mechanical style. Several others are going strong after four years.
