I use the picture hanger method using hacksaw blades. I hang my tape measures, stud finder, and other "goodies" with a belt clip.

****... Now i'm thinking about all the places i need to stash a tape measure for convenience purposes. Desk, kitchen drawer, bench, roller box, other craftsman stack, car, tool bag, trailer, next to the chopsaw...
Obviously I didnt take this picture for the purpose of showing the tape measures.
I never even thought about it til i posted about an old mag wheel I cleaned up to use for storing compressor hose, posted it and someone commented on it. Since then I've grown to really like using the toy dump truck to store my tapes.
Anyway, it's another approach:

i dont want to waste a drawer for tape measures.The OP says he is taking all his steel tapes out of a drawer and now he wants to know where to store them.
Simplest answer: BACK IN THE DRAWER
