I'd love to know from anyone here who is an engineer etc WHY are there so many different size fasteners? Is it purely so tool makers can profit?

Seems to me we could easily get by with say 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 19 mm and a few of the big sizes, at least for automotive needs. Really how much difference can there be between 18 and 19 mm or 5 or 6 mm for small stuff? Also what genius ever came up with Torx? Just so rubes could shove an Allen key in there and round it off? How is Torx any different from an Allen head anyway? Sorry for the rant but you have to admit that IMO automotive and fastener engineering is just a scam to sell tools and force those with "basic" tools into the stealership to have their car serviced.

Scotty,

I'm with you all the way brother. This fastener head situation is totally out of control. The advantages of standardization have taken a back seat to corporate self-interest.

Sunex does have it- but OUCH! at $9.00 for one socket! A few bucks more and I could just get a whole 'nother complete Tekton set ! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0076HI9KS/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I hardly ever lose tools, wish I could find that 8mm. It vanished last month doing the dreaded ****** drop/torque converter replacement on my 2003 Ford Taurus. The labor savings from doing that job myself vs. a shop has pretty much paid for all the tools I've bought in the past half decade.

Scotty,

Glad you bought Tekton and not the big orange house brand. These singles look reasonable:

I see you have already been taken care of by both Astro and Tekton, but I just couldn't resist.

Definitely to both Tekton & Astro.

I know where I’ll be looking first when I need something.

I'm lucky. Family Farm and Home 3 miles away stocks most of the Tekton line. Good stuff. Kudos to Tekton and Astro for going the extra mile.

Tekton, HQ is Grand Rapids, Mi.

FFH, HQ in Muskegon, Mi

Less than an hour apart, no wonder FFH is carrying them, smart business sense.

You know what's better business sense ? Having guys like Astro and Dave as contributing members to a forum like this. You can't ask for better PR.

When I first saw this thread I thought they did sell them individually. Then I clicked the link to see they were impact sockets. The local Family Farm and Home store has some Tekton stuff but maybe I need to look a little more closer the next time in there to see what they do and how they sell it.

Stopped by FFH today and did a quick browse on the Tekton stuff. It appears that all the single sockets are deepwell, both chrome and impact.

I'll admit, whoever designs the set up of the display for the tools must be a Tetris champ. There is SAE **** ton of tools stuffed in about 12 linear feet of display.

I have CrV impacts from horror freight, I'm not knocking Tektons CrV, just pointing out as you did that they are generally considered "better" for the reasons you stated.

Why? Because that guy acted like the HF sockets are trash and the impacts would be a disaster. They are tanks also.

I actually prefer cr-v impacts (ones of decent cr-v and tempering)
Lot of the current cr-mo are soft as cheese and wallow out badly.
I got cr-v impacts aged around 3 decades and never split one and they get beat hard daily.
Grade of material used and tempering process is what counts, better made cr-v will be way better than cheap cro-mo branded impact sockets .

Hey Scott,

Sent you a pm, but wanted to make sure this wasn't missed. Our call ended a little quicker than I was counting on. We don't offer that socket for sale, but for singles like that we can usually send out a socket to complete the set.

We are working to expand our socket program and hope to have 3/8 singles in the next year.

Give me a shout and I'll get you all set.

Dave

You guys should at least do singles and no skips even if mail order from tekton only .
easier for you guys with warranty too when have singles stocked to send out .
One of the big issues on cheaper brands is individual availability and size skipping, HF are missing out on lot of sales/new customers of the pitts pro socketry due to not expanding impacts and chromes to suit more pro user and not changing supplier of wrenches to something better (such as the tekton ones lol)
The market is waiting for someone step up the game and first to do it will reap the reward with brand recognition and loyalty and thus long term profitability.
Too many tool brands have half the tools missing or warranty that disappears, first brand to fill the void will do good trade .
