I'm new to this forum, but have found lots of helpful information on this site. I currently am living in Iowa; I went to school out here at Iowa State and got a degree in Agricultural Engineering. I started working with a small research company right out of college designing and building machines for deep sea oil exploration. But in June the company went under and filed bankruptcy so I had to find a new job. Well I got a job up at John Deere working as an Engineer with engines. So for the time being I'm renting a house; the garage is a small one car garage that was outdated electrically and poorly built. The first thing I did was rewire the entire garage, it used to be all on one 20A breaker. So I added another 20A breaker. The lights and garage door are on their own breaker now. I placed outlets every 6', which I think is code now, and have a 20A GFCI outlet to start the run - I'll probably only use this for my welder. Then I insulated using R-13 and put OSB over top that. My plans for the garage are to use it for working on my truck and a couple other mechanic projects I have. The next thing I am going to do is paint the OSB, put mop board along the base, and put up some 1"x4" pieces to cover the seams. I am not sure what to do to insulate the ceiling. It's a detached garage, 16x22. I am always up for suggestions and people's opinions.

Well found a deal on 1"x4"x8' so I went and got enough to put in the corners and over the seams. Granted I spent an hour looking for boards that weren't twisted or all beat up, but for $40 I got enough to do the whole garage. I sealed around the window and door today, so tomorrow I'll put trim up. I'm going to paint over the OSB battleship gray, and the trim will be black. I know to use oil based paint and primer for the OSB. But I was wondering if anyone had an estimate as to how much paint I'll need.

My experience has been that you will get a bit less than half of the advertised coverage on the first coat. Looking good BTW.

On paint you will want to use a primer first. Nice start on your little spot of paradise.

Congratulations on the JD job. My uncle retired after 30+ years from the same place you probably work.

For ceiling insulation, you might see if the box store rents the blower for blown in insulation. If you OSB for the ceiling, you might want to use lath instead of 1x4 to cover the seams.

Well I caved and got Iowa license plates today. Then painted some of the garage. I decided to do it a little wrong and not take the "trim" down and paint the walls and then the trim. I am going to try to paint the walls with the trim up. I'll be honest though I have a feeling that I will be taking it down to paint the walls. But I thought I'd try it differently.

Hate to be that guy, but the flag is backwards on the wall. Stars should always be in the upper left corner when hung against a wall.

I would also estimate no more than half the advertised coverage for at least the first coat.

Wow, you're putting all that effort into a place you are just renting?

BTW, the rule on outlets is for the residence, not the garage, and it is that no electrical device placed on a wall should be further than 6' from an outlet. Means 6' cords will reach.

I think only one is required in a garage.

In any case, nice start on a work space.

Did you put the waxy side of the OSB toward the wall?

Yeah I just realized it is backwards. That will be changed tomorrow. I am putting all of this work in because we will be here for three years and I constantly use the garage and want it to be usable year round and be comfortable. I did it too for practicality and real usage and only buy stuff when it's on sale. I put waxy side out, is that an issue?

My bad. There is no waxed side. See here:

Hmm there is a side that does appear waxy. The article was a good read though. I already decided to take the trim board and paint everything the right way.

Well I started priming the garage, I read a lot about what type of primer to use and what company to use. I ended up going with Zinsser Interior oil based primer. Best decision but I will say that I over estimated by getting double coverage. You need 2.5x. My 500 square feet took 3 cans which is supposed to cover 1500 sq ft.

Well finished second coat of the gray and I'm starting to put the trim back up. I have some mop board to put up once the trim is back on.

Well I put up the east wall mop board and trim pieces tonight. Decided to put everything back up on the wall. Tomorrow I will paint the one area where the TV and surround sound is. Overall I'm very happy with how it turned out with the exception of the glossy finish that the gray paint has. I've always preferred a flat finish. The next thing to do in the garage will be insulate the "ceiling". I am thinking about just putting insulation panels along the flat portion of the rafters. The reasoning to this is that I use the upper area for storage and the rafters are no where near evenly spaced or even close to a standard width.

There are some that would say why improve what you don't own. I'd say BE Happy where you live & who cares what they think! Looks great!

I agree. Nothing wrong with making improvements on rental property, and it establishes a good relationship with the landlord. Couple of questions for you, mind you I'm not criticizing, just curious why:
- How come you went with such a dark gloss on the walls? Usually, white enhances the lighting and semi-gloss reduces the glare.
- Why was it necessary to cover the seams?
- Looks like your OSB comes close to touching the floor, where it can wick moisture from the concrete. Any particular reason you didn't gap it off the floor?

Finished and insulated walls in a garage look MUCH better than bare, framed walls, and are MUCH more practical. And make it much more comfortable to spend time in, and can be accomplished for just a little investment. Keep up the good work!

It was necessary to cover the seams because none of the stud spacing is correctly centered. So my decision was instead of cutting OSB so that centers would line up I left them at 4x8. What happened then was pieces wouldn't be flush to one another, this is based off how far the edge was from a stud. So I used 1"x4" to cover the seam and pull the two panels flush. I put a layer of silicone along the bottom edge of the paneling. There is spots where it is very close to the floor but my intent is to epoxy and seal the floor sometime soon.

Nice. I'm about to move to a house and all it has is a 16x21/22. I'm trying to find all the inspiration I can. Not only is it small, it needs work.

My inspiration was my truck. I have a John Deere 4045 diesel that needs rebuilt and then put in my 1998 Chevy

Mud truck?

I've got a couple projects myself. I've been working on them in my front yard, so I've definitely got motivation to get in the garage. That's why when we started house shopping a garage was a must.

I've been looking at all the small garage threads for storage ideas to create space so I can make the most out of my little shack.

Nope daily driver and hauler. I've seen too many cummins swap so I'd thought I'd do something different. Plus I work for John Deere as a Diesel engines engineer so I have an idea how to make it better.

Well insulated the ceiling this weekend with some R-7.5 paneling. Well no later did I finish did my father-in-law tell me that he has a blow in insulation trailer that I could use. I might blow some insulation in overtop the paneling if I find the paneling isn't that great.

Made a couple benches for the garage. The first one was an idea in a woodworking book I have

Nice going. I rebuilt 2 Mustangs (65 & 66) in a 16x20. It can be done. That included all my tools and a couple makeshift benches, so I know work can be done comfortably. Make use of the wall space higher up and ceiling space if possible. Good Luck.

My plan is to start a custom built truck. From the ground up, so I'm trying to figure out how to maximize spave
