Yeah, it's a new-ish terminology.
Wi-Fi 5 = 802.11ac (though I've never seen the Wi-Fi 5 designation marketed)
Wi-Fi 6 = 802.11ax (on the 2.4 and 5GHz bands)
Wi-Fi 6E = 802.11ax (same as above plus the 6GHz bands)
Wi-Fi 7 = 802.11be
I know about the versions. as said above, they arent typically referred to as generations.
