Hey I just wanted to say thanks to who previously had posted their experiences with the Devoe products sold at ICI Paints. I did my garage floor this past weekend. It is a 20x24 that is 25 yrs. old. I used 3 kits of the light grey 224HS and 1 kit of the 379 clear. I paid $85 for each 224HS kit and $55 for the 396 kit. I purchased 6lbs of floor chips from ebay (Wolverine Coatings) equal amounts of blue, black and white, but only used maybe 3lbs. I also bought (3) Wooster epoxy glide 9" rollers, (2) 5 gallon buckets and (3) 4" cut brushes and (2) rolls of blue 2" masking tape.
Floor Prep:
I pressure washed with 3 gallons of simple green purple that I let sit for 20min first, I wet the concrete and then used straight simple green with a scrub brush.
I couldn't find a diamond grinder, the one at home depot was broken, so I rented a floor buffer with 60 grit sand paper. I didn't feel comfortable with the job that it did so I ended up acid etching with a gallon of 30% muriatic acid in 2.5 gallons of water. I didn't know how long to let acid etch so I left the floor go for about 30 minutes before washing it down. I put out one small box of baking soda at the end of the garage so when I washed the acid out it would neutralize and not stain my driveway etc.
I pressure washed again after the acid etching with simple green, maybe a pint in two gallons of water (very diluted).

Devoe Floor:
I let the floor dry for 3 days and then started laying the epoxy. I mixed 1.5 kits for the first coat with no thinner. I used every bit of the 1.5 kit. It took about 7 hrs in 90oF heat before I it was dry enough to walk on.
Next day I laid the second coat, mixing the rest of the 1.5 kit. I worked in 5ft sections across the floor. I didn't feel comfortable walking across the floor with spikes to lay the chips so I worked small sections, lay chips then paint more etc. The chips was tough to get it even, I never did, oh well. The floor was dry enough to walk on in 5 hrs tops, dried faster then the first coat. I also used every bit of the 1.5 kit, almost didn't have enough for the very end, I got pretty worried but was able to spread it out enough to lay the chips.
Third day was the clear. This I think was the hardest to do since you really can't see what you are doing. The epoxy is shiny, then laying a clear on top was hard to see what you had and hadn't coated. I ended up using every bit of the clear as well. The clear took about 8 hrs to dry before I was comfortable walking on it. The clear was very strong, smelled just like clear automotive laquer paint. I definitely recommend a respirator for all products. The only trouble I had was lack of experience and wind pushing little bits of grass and leaves in my garage when I was letting it dry. Also the epoxy is nasty stuff, and nothing really cleans it well. I used three 4" cut brushes because the brushes were cheaper than any cleaner I had, and one roller for each coat. I also used 2" blue masking tape around the trim that I removed after I cut each time, so I had to reapply more tape before each coat. Acetone poured on a paper towel was the best cleaner I had to remove any epoxy from my skin. If you use the Xylol thinner, DO NOT get it on your skin, I tried it as a cleaner for my mixer and painting tools, and ended up burning the piss out of my hand. Its better to let the epoxy dry then just peel it off.

I didn't bring my camera with me today but I will post pictures tomorrow.

A safer (at least more pleasant) way to remove epoxy from skin is waterless hand sanitizer or more specifically rubbing alcohol. ;-)

Hey, I'm in Houston too and I called a ICI paint store and they quoted me something like $135 for each 224HS kit and $89 for the clear. Do you have an account with them or did you just buy retail? Which store did you go to...as I would like to buy it there also. Thanks!

those are their retail prices i think... if you can get ahold of a salesman they def have the power to discount. However, they tend to do this more for people with accounts and would potentially buy on a regular basis.

The one off of Larkwood. I don't have an account I just jew'd them a bit. They gave me the general 30% off for the "any" contractor discount.

Thanks. I am getting ready to move into a new house, reason for being able to do the garage floor, and didn't have many choices on cleaners since I have nothing over at the new house, so used what I had. But thats good info for anybody else because I don't remember it being discussed.

I don't mean to be overly sensitive here, but I do read this board regularly and have posted both questions and information I have received regarding Devoe products. I also happen to be Jewish. Is it necessary to say that you "jewed" someone to get a better price?

I don't know of anybody of any religion who does not try to get a better price when shopping.

I'm not Jewish... and I, too, don't mean to be overly sensitive... but agree with Ranger that using a form of the verb "to negotiate" is preferred to the verbification of the noun associated with one religion/ethnic group.

Where I grew up, "jewing" was a verb in common use, and I didn't even get the association until a Jewish classmate (a friend) pointed it out to me after I'd used it. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, and I sure felt like a *****.

In Las Vegas, there are about 4 or 5 stores; I called the closest but they told me only 1 ICI store in the area sold the 224HS product -- the one that deals with commercial accounts & contractors.

I drove to it, and just walking in off the street they charged me $75 for each 224HS kit (37.50 each for 1 gal resin & 1 gal converter). I didn't have an account, and I told them I was just a DIY homeowner. They charged me $80 for the kit of 379UVA clear coat.

They also told me where to buy paint flakes, where to get spikes (they suggested old used golf shoes -- "that's what all the DIYers around here use"), etc... and a couple of their sales reps in the store spent maybe a half hour with me educating me on the process and best known methods for application by a DIYer, etc. They were quite helpful.

In the SF Bay Area, the price was maybe 50% or 60% higher in one store I looked at, and they didn't really know very much about the product and couldn't tell me much beyond they don't sell very much of it.

I'm kind of surprised there is this much variation in their pricing.

Definitely get a respirator ... a good one designed for pro's who apply this stuff. If you have any flame source (e.g., a gas water heater with a pilot light) the spec sheet says to turn off the flame during application, and after applying this stuff, I now know why.

One idea just came to me: maybe you can call the Las Vegas store on the telephone & get them to FAX you a quote ($75 for the 224HS kit), and then take it to your local ICI store... ask them to meet it. I just looked at the ICI web site for stores in Las Vegas... the one I went to was one or the other of the two below (I don't remember which)

Just a thought.

ICI PAINTS STORE
5250 W Charleston Blvd
Las Vegas, NV 89102
(702) 870-2855

ICI PAINTS STORE
4240 Spring Mountain Road
Las Vegas, NV 89102

Nice floor! Can you get the truck in there? Good to see you venture over from ftw!

No truck won't fit because it is too tall. No worries though, I am just glad to finally have a garage I can call mine. I should have everything finished and moved in by this weekend. :)

Hey Aggie,

Great job. I have a question: I used the same 224HS, but topped it with "Devthane 379UVA". I was curious so I went to look on the ICI Devoe website to see what the "396 clear" was, but I couldn't find this product. Is there a typo in your post? Or is it a non-Devoe product? Here's the ICI Devoe website where you can do a product search, by the way:

Thanks,

Yes 379UVA is the correct part number and a typo in my first post, not 396. Actually I have no idea why I typed 396. I went ahead and fixed the post to not confuse anyone that searches or reads later.
