Hey I just wanted to say thanks to who previously had posted their experiences with the Devoe products sold at ICI Paints. I did my garage floor this past weekend. It is a 20x24 that is 25 yrs. old. I used 3 kits of the light grey 224HS and 1 kit of the 379 clear. I paid $85 for each 224HS kit and $55 for the 396 kit. I purchased 6lbs of floor chips from ebay (Wolverine Coatings) equal amounts of blue, black and white, but only used maybe 3lbs. I also bought (3) Wooster epoxy glide 9" rollers, (2) 5 gallon buckets and (3) 4" cut brushes and (2) rolls of blue 2" masking tape.
Floor Prep:
I pressure washed with 3 gallons of simple green purple that I let sit for 20min first, I wet the concrete and then used straight simple green with a scrub brush.
I couldn't find a diamond grinder, the one at home depot was broken, so I rented a floor buffer with 60 grit sand paper. I didn't feel comfortable with the job that it did so I ended up acid etching with a gallon of 30% muriatic acid in 2.5 gallons of water. I didn't know how long to let acid etch so I left the floor go for about 30 minutes before washing it down. I put out one small box of baking soda at the end of the garage so when I washed the acid out it would neutralize and not stain my driveway etc.
I pressure washed again after the acid etching with simple green, maybe a pint in two gallons of water (very diluted).
Devoe Floor:
I let the floor dry for 3 days and then started laying the epoxy. I mixed 1.5 kits for the first coat with no thinner. I used every bit of the 1.5 kit. It took about 7 hrs in 90oF heat before I it was dry enough to walk on.
Next day I laid the second coat, mixing the rest of the 1.5 kit. I worked in 5ft sections across the floor. I didn't feel comfortable walking across the floor with spikes to lay the chips so I worked small sections, lay chips then paint more etc. The chips was tough to get it even, I never did, oh well. The floor was dry enough to walk on in 5 hrs tops, dried faster then the first coat. I also used every bit of the 1.5 kit, almost didn't have enough for the very end, I got pretty worried but was able to spread it out enough to lay the chips.
Third day was the clear. This I think was the hardest to do since you really can't see what you are doing. The epoxy is shiny, then laying a clear on top was hard to see what you had and hadn't coated. I ended up using every bit of the clear as well. The clear took about 8 hrs to dry before I was comfortable walking on it. The clear was very strong, smelled just like clear automotive laquer paint. I definitely recommend a respirator for all products. The only trouble I had was lack of experience and wind pushing little bits of grass and leaves in my garage when I was letting it dry. Also the epoxy is nasty stuff, and nothing really cleans it well. I used three 4" cut brushes because the brushes were cheaper than any cleaner I had, and one roller for each coat. I also used 2" blue masking tape around the trim that I removed after I cut each time, so I had to reapply more tape before each coat. Acetone poured on a paper towel was the best cleaner I had to remove any epoxy from my skin. If you use the Xylol thinner, DO NOT get it on your skin, I tried it as a cleaner for my mixer and painting tools, and ended up burning the piss out of my hand. Its better to let the epoxy dry then just peel it off.
I didn't bring my camera with me today but I will post pictures tomorrow.
