That is totally cool. I can only imagine how hard it is to deliberately build out of square. Once again Jack, you amaze me.

Fabulous looking house. Try adding a length of rope near the slide: when my children were small the rope became a harness for climbing up the slide, a toy safety device, the support for a canvas extension and so on. As usual it is the cheap things that get used the most.

You must have not only patient friendly neighbors but an HOA that's also very cooperative. Mine would have a fit for sure...looks cool though!
I am sure that the neighbors are totally cool with anything Jack builds after seeing the quality of the finished products.

As Craptain said I'm sure it was much harder to build when everything was out of square, but it came out great and I'm sure your kids love it.

Thanks, guys!

Here's a picture from this morning. I'm going to make some cosmetic changes to the front door -- maybe add another small window to it.

House+Morning1449596118.jpg

That's a great idea about adding a rope above the slide. I think I'll do it.

It was strange building out of square. In some ways, it made me more careful about the things that were true horizontal or true vertical. But then there were a lot of pieces where I'd just see what angle was needed and cut the thing.

My neighbors have been great. I'm kind of amazed no one has had anything negative to say about it. I mean, it's pretty big and it's right out in the front lawn. But I think enough of them have kids that they see things in that context.

How awesome is that? I'd say way harder to build crooked than square. Your little guy must be tickled.

My 7 yr old is petitioning for a new play house. We have a perfect tree to build a cool tree house. Your design built as a tree house with a front "deck" and ladder is about perfect.

Jack, with El Nino in mind, not to mention wandering critters, do you plan to have a way to close the door/window to the slide? Just a panel with some flip catches from the inside would do the trick.

I'm planning on a weatherproof curtain for there -- more for the sun coming through than anything else. We're in such a crowded/urban area that the raccoons and possums generally stay hidden away.

Here's a Wizard-of-Oz-inspired detail on our drought-ed grass:

And the interior, painted and swept out:

And then with the beginnings of kid clutter. A friend gave us the little cast-iron table and chair set, which I'm planning on wire-brushing off and painting. My daughter is insisting on pink as a color. We'll see what my son says about that.

Jack,

I'm sitting here sipping a beer to celebrate the imminent slab pour of my build tomorrow and I came across this picture.

I glad I was only sipping my beer or the mess would have been bigger. Ha!

That detail really made me smile.

Best regards,

Scott

Hi Jack, playhouse looks fantastic!

I recently watched the "you can only think about one thing" video and really enjoyed it. In it you mention the 14 year journey of going from a 1:56 to, now, a 1:26 at Willows.

I'd love to see a video where you take us through that journey. Highlighting key mods and/or driver development breakthroughs each year. Was the lap time drop steady or did it come in big chunks at first and then dwindle down to a half second here and there? I've been on a similar journey with my road race car (5 years in) and would love to watch the development of your car through the years.

Thanks!

Cool playhouse. Always interested in your projects and such. One question tho. Is the windshield on your jeep reinforced for hauling or are they just that strong to begin with. Cousin of mine wants to haul similar to you with his jeep and asked me. Said I honstly didn't know if it was a good idea or not. Not that familiar with jeeps.

And here it is finished. It ended up taking a day longer than the week I'd hoped for. But now it's got paint, windows, a (Dutch) door and an El-Nino-ready roof. The last work on the interior and maybe some landscaping are on the list for the holiday break. But the kids are finally able to play in the thing.

I love it! My youngest "kid" is 30 now but I've got a 2 year old grandson. I'm in the planning stages for a garden shed for next summer and when it comes to the yard my wife loves the word "whimsical" so maybe, just maybe I can combine the two. Thanks for the inspiration.

First interior issue. My daughter is taller than the space under the loft. So while she'd try using the little play stove -- it meant her head getting bumped.

But there isn't a lot of floorspace in this place. It's got a great mid-Wilshire location, but it's only 30sf. :)

The solutions was to cut the back of the toy at an angle so it could use the space left by the wall moving outward. Look closely, and you'll see the wall stud going into the stovetop burner. Probably not a viable way to go with a real kitchen appliance.

Now the floorspace trade-off is not much more than the width of a 2x4.

That is Excellent. Instantly bummed I didn't try something similar when my kids were smaller- but I did just build my daughter a Tardis so there's that.

Surprised how recognizable that building in back was though I haven't lived in L.A. in a dozen years, but I was on the Miracle Mile for a while. You can probably smell the Tar Pits when the wind carries!

We smell the tar so often that we don't notice it at all. :)

It's great to have a park that big so close, though.

The 'Met Life' building now has a different corporation name on it, but it's been a thumbtack on the local map since the early seventies. Now our block is also marked by the redesigned Petersen Auto Museum --

That is maybe a hundred times cooler than when I lived there- a great addition for the Petersen too. It was the first area I lived in my time there, then moved down the street to Hayworth right behind Canter's. My favorite place was the Farmer's Market, which felt like a real piece of Old LA.
A sub stop there sure would be a boon. Now you've got me wanting to check out the old neighborhood next time I'm down, thanks for the pics!

On the local-inspector front, I'm sure I could get busted for something. But sheds and playhouses that are less than 120 sf (and don't have electric or plumbing) are exempt from needing a building permit.

Today the kids didn't have school, because of a bomb threat. So there was more babysitting than usual. But if you can't use that time to get some garage-based chores off your list, then I figure the terrorists have won. :)

So I did three small projects today. First, I test-installed wood blinds in the playhouse. These were a dumpster find from the other day. Then I put in a floor on top of the plywood. It's just vinyl, but it only set me back $36 and it should hide dirt better than the plywood did. And I also made a wing.

Here's the floor. It's supposed to look like rough-cut driftwood:

dJZj6a.jpg

I sewed those curtains, too. :p

Here you can see the blinds -- tilted to match the windows. If I decide to keep them there, I'll take them back down and paint them to match the trim.

Rv6vJm.jpg

Another shot that shows both the blinds and the flooring. I don't know if I'd use either in my house -- but this is a playhouse:

R7Zy5n.jpg

I still have to clean up and repaint that table set.

Then I made a new wing for the two times I'll be taking the race car out over the winter break. I'm going for a personal best at the local track, and this wing is 10 full inches wider than the one I normally bolt on. I was going to fiberglass it today as well, but decided to try just a coat of acrylic to see if that will work all right for this one, since it will only see a couple of uses.

Following my research for building a teardrop camper, I have (I hope) a better way to adhere the wing and mounts together.

ANmLQ8.jpg

A lot wider than the regular one:

And paint:

I'm testing the idea of a big increase in aero -- since a track record for production cars was just set by a Dodge Viper ACR, which has a crazy-huge wing and splitter. I don't have the horsepower to push as much air as a Viper -- but I'm going to try a bit more wing in back, slightly different overall rake, and some other stuff up front. We'll see how it goes.

Jack, as always.... Cracking progress.

Just shared the last few pages with my wife, and then I realised it was a mistake :shocking: she got that far away look in her eyes and said matter of factory "we have space for one, don't we?"

Looks like I just created future pain here. No grand children, but the seed was planted.

Her comment on the new wing was "Those are expensive" which I could at least reply to "Not if Jack makes them" and then explained your car evolution and the way you have evolved it over time on a budget. Seems you now have another fan.

I love the dumpster rescue especially, as I am a champion dumpster diver..... Often the money is there, but it is a lot more rewarding getting $100,200,5.00 for free. Here is my thread on screwing pride and putting cash in your pocket. http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/89875/tip-treasures-updated-12-2015

Not sure where you go for inspiration and learnings, but as far as Teardrop Trailers for all sizes of families...... This is the place www.tnttt.com the index page has all sorts of guidance http://tnttt.com/

Here is one I did, if it helps, I made many small mistakes but they are all documented. http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/67389/grizz-teardrop-trailer-completed-build

Trust that's not too much of a hijack.

I can't help but think long term and dual-use. Is the door wide enough so that in ten years, you can roll your race tires in there for storage?
