Thanks. My car was fine -- the piece I bolt on up front took all the hits, and even it was good to go for the next session. Just dust and pieces of tumbleweed.

Sometimes I visit a small retirement community in the Ozarks and you never know who you are talking to. One day I was talking to two guys and when one walked off, the other told me he was Carroll Shelbys son. I talked to a guy looking at magazines and kidded him about looking at **** mags. Turns out he has handmade 4500 dulcimers. I wondered how he kept count and he told me tags every one

My brother told me a guy stopped him to ask a question last night. It took him a minute to realize it was Dan Majerle.

A few years ago I was helping an older guy put together a model for a display. Afterward a guy came up and asked if I knew who that was. Turns out he was a Nobel Prize winning Russian mathematician. He was doing a presentation at the U of IL.

Yep Pete Brock you got to speak to one of the legends of American Racing, what a great designer, what a great engineer.

I was at the Daytona for bike week a number of years ago I was down next to the hot pits watching the bikes come and go off the track and I happened to look over and see somebody leaning against the fence about 20 feet away. I took a good close look and then I realized who it was. I went over and spoke to him and asked him, "say aren't you John Surtees?"

John Surtees, the only person ever to win the drivers championship in Grand Prix motorcycling and the Formula 1 drivers championship. Yes it was him. He had some kind things to say about my interests in his career and I mentioned to him that I had seen him driving at Watkins Glen in the 1960s, F1 and that one of my favorite vehicles from that era was the early sixties shark nose Ferrari. He said Ferrari crushed his cars at the end of the season so the technology would not be appropriated by other teams.

I've never been there but when I started at GE almost 20 years ago, one of the older guys found out that I had a Mustang. He started telling me about his nephew that worked at Shelby. I thought, yeah right, old guy story.

Well, as it turns out, that nephew is now the President at Shelby. How was I to know. :dunno:

Prepped a usmc huey in 2003 in northern Kuwait for a flight into Iraq. An imbedded reporter was flying that day(not uncommon) but this guy was older than normal, nice, and didn't seem anxious like most, and had a smile ear to ear. Had a little chat, pilots fired her up and I taxied it out. Gunny told me after I walked off the line it was Oliver North.

Also had a baby sitter for my two boys. She was a college student nearby and would watch them twice a week on the days my wife worked for 4 hours. After several months of 5 min chit chat when she showed up at the house before I left things just seemed odd about conversations about her family. Finally asked and her mom was ceo of a axle/suspension company that supplied ford, father a large attorney in Louisville, and brother star player on the ncaa championship team. Couldn't believe she was babysitting my kids, parents did a wonderful job insuring she didn't end up a spoiled brat.

Here's a little description and a video of what a track day morning feels like.

It's always different, but this time the perfect moment happens on the drive in. I’m awake at 5:00, a cold January morning, in the car and on my way by 5:30. I’ve been doing this so long that I’ve got the kinks worked out. There’s hot coffee within easy reach. Good heat from the exchangers down on the car’s headers. Noise canceling earbuds filter most of the engine sound, but not so much that I can’t hear how well the thing is running. I have music coming in through the earbuds, as well as an audio feed from the radar detector, which means I can plant myself in the empty left lane and enjoy watching the sun slowly rise in the hour and a quarter that it takes to get over the San Gabriels and all the way out to the oldest and fastest road course in North America. There’ll be a lot of adrenaline later, but this drive up out of the city, through the mountains and up to the high-altitude desert is a tremendously calm experience, every time I do it.

It looks like you've painted your muffler. (I'm assuming you didn't send it off for ceramic coating.) Did you do this for aesthetic reasons or is there science involved?

I see a stainless muffler in my future for my otherwise boring sedan and am pondering painting. I'm assuming high-temp primer and then exhaust paint, flat black is the thing to do?

Thanks for sharing Jack. Whether it be for track days or snowboarding trips to Mammoth that early morning drive with clear roads and the sun rising is a special experience that I try never to take for granted :thumbup:

I recently got my car re-assembled after bodywork/paint so this is just fuel for the motivation fire I've been stoking. I can't wait to get back out there later this year and turn some laps.

Yes, I've painted it a few times (I think I've had two of the Magnaflow mufflers). High-temp paint, probably primer. Maybe once there was a coat of barbecue grille paint put on with a brush? But high-temp flat black on there now. It's held up better than I would have thought. And yes, for aesthetic reasons. If I didn't paint part of the exit pipes, it would just look plain weird.

I hadn't. But my nephew's Mazdaspeed Turbo lost the #4 rod bearing, so we pretended we knew what we were doing.

We jobbed out the rebuild itself, but put ourselves in charge of pulling the engine out and then putting it back together and dropping it back in.

He's an engineer, but hadn't ever changed his own oil before this. Now he's got a whole nother level of comfort with working on his car. :)

Not necessarily. 4th gen Camaros drop the engine out the bottom with k member. It's interesting to do at home. Undo frame bolts, lift nose of car up and roll front end out. It will come out the top, but it takes a lot of doing. Fortunately I never had to pull the motor out of mine.

Right now, we have a weird vibration between 50 and about 75 MPH, I think it may be the driveshaft or ?? (Not the wheels or tires, this we do know), but it ***** it's at highway speeds.

Anyway, thanks for the story, keep us posted!!

I learned that mechanics will typically drop the engine (along with the front suspension assembly) for a Miata, while ordinary guys will pull it up and out, since you don't need a lift that way. I suggested we try dropping it, but all the step-by-step guides I found were guys pulling it out the top. So reluctantly, I bought a hoist. (Who am I kidding? I was glad for the excuse to buy it -- now I have another way to lift heavy stuff.)

There won't be much more to post, since we started in December and now it's done and out the door. I don't know the mileage, but it was not the original case. The explanation for the #4 rod bearing was oil starvation. I don't know Miata's very well, but it could be lateral g-force loads kept oil away from the pick-up. The car was low on oil when it happened and was being driven at a track with long, fast sweeper-type corners. It could be shortcoming of the previous rebuild, which was done by a previous owner. There was also a 5-4 mis-shift, which brought the revs up to just under 8K, which might have contributed to it. We simply don't know.

I would guess your vibration is drive-shaft related. Has it been removed and reinstalled? It could have gotten turned when that happened and put out of balance.

But again, I'm not a Miata guy so that's a wild guess.

What did you do with your Porsche while this was going on?

It got the covered spot in the driveway. It's the longest the car's ever been out of the garage I built for it.

The mis-shift was mine, unfortunately. So while it might or might not have been the cause of the bearing failure, I wanted to help. We split the cost of the engine work and did the rest of it ourselves.

All told, we were very lucky with getting so much of it right on the first try. Miatas are very different from Porsches. And we had to keep track of vacuum lines, fuel lines, air lines, water lines, oil lines and all the electrical harness connections. We also had to pull the transmission and line up the clutch and all of that. It went shockingly well, all things considered. :)

See, that's the difference between us mere mortals and you with the garage. At least in my case, my "all cleaned up" photo would probably be the first photo just without the car on the lift :bowdown:

Couple of things more, Jack. I think you could go another rotation on that bench vise and close the jaws up a bit. And maybe push the stool under the table so it's out of the way. Couple of smudges on the wall there can be cleaned up. Thought maybe you should mop, but that was a smudge on my screen.

Oh, and 1987 called. They want their phone back :D
