Very cool getting that old trusty saw up and running again. You gonna tackle any of the rust and cosmetics as well? Or is that the FIL's job when he gets it back? It's a cool paint color with the red knobs as a contrast.

It was in good shape for its age when it when to my BIL but now it's alittle rusted. No plans to restore or deal with surface rust. My FIL is just interested in having it back. It's a splattered paint job with green base and white specs. I wouldn't know where to start if even tried

Great to hear things are looking good for your BIL. The saw looks like a nice little project.

Thanks, It was alittle fun but dealing with 50+ year wiring. I got it finishing and all lubed up and running good. Tomorrow I'll bring it down to him

This is one reason nothing gets done during the summer at the 5 Stitches garage. It's a typical FL night and temp I my garage is roughly 94f and 65% humidity. I thought temp might be off but both my thermometers read 94f.

While it would be great to have insulated walls, they are a smaller contributor to the heat gain in your garage. If the door and ceiling are insulated, all you need is a 110v window A/C unit. You'll need to cut a hole in the outside wall and add a dedicated 15- or 20-amp breaker to power it. If you're cheap and lazy like me, add a switch next to the door leading into the house to be able to turn it on and off without reaching the control panel (A/C units work best mounted high on the wall).

I cool my 720 sf garage with a 12,000 btu unit that runs on 110v. According to the experts I should have a bigger unit, around 18,000 btu but that would mean 220v. In addition, running too big a unit chills the air without dropping the humidity. I only run the A/C when I'm working in the garage and I've had bare steel exposed on the Corvette frame for almost 4 years and it doesn't even have surface rust.

A 12,000 btu 110v LG unit is around $350 and comes with a remote so you wouldn't need the switch by the door. I'm sure there are lower prices out there but you aren't looking at thousands of dollars.

I would love to do a A/C unit but nothing is insulated and feel a waste. I did dream up a homemade deal that would be on top on the refrigerator and recycle cool water from either the freezer or food side up to a recirculating pump into a coil that would have a fan blow air across it. In simpler terms in would be like the heater in a car but instead of warm water it would have cold water recirculating from the fridge. I already have the refrigerator running 24/7, so small recirculating pump and small fan would cost too much to run. It's a thought I kicked around.

I have two "window units" in my shop office. Today it was 75-80F and at 5:45PM it dropped to 72F with outside temp at 91F. The humidity was lower today.

Well, interesting thought of using the chilled water approach from your fridge but if going forward with this experiment, rather than any simple coil as your heat exchanger put your scrounging skills to work and find a couple of used, small automotive fin type heat exchangers that you can adapt. Maybe an old evaporator core from a car unit for on top the fridge and a small aux oil cooler for inside the fridge. Since you would be cooling the water inside the fridge using the provided cold environment a small unit might have enough capacity.
I've seen the red neck approach before where someone ran their garden hose to an old car condenser and placed that in front of a box fan. Wasteful on the non-recirculated water but the basic principle was there.

While it might be a fun experiment, at the end of the very hot day I would still just install a decent window unit and not worry about the insulation factor.
I had a hand me down unit from my parents that I just set up free standing in the garage and ran it while working. Stuck a catch pan under the condensate drain and blew cold air in my working direction. It helped a lot.

The idea for using the fridge for the cooling water for a fan is a good one. I suspect you will find you won't get much cold air after it has been running for any length of time in heat. You would need a huge radiator in the fridge or preferable the freezer with fan to help cool it but eventually the fridge/freezer won't be able to keep up and you will just be blowing slightly cool air. The capacity of the fridge/freezer is just too low compared to what even a small window unit is capable of. My 2 cents so it isn't worth much, but it would be cool to see. (pun intended, you be the judge, jury, and executioner)

My plan was to source a heater core from a vehicle. I replaced the one in my Ranger and thinking it would be great size and shape I need. My father has 2 a/c window units that he uses with a generator for if a hurricane hits and power goes out. I suppose I could try it and see how they work before buying one. I'm not spending as much time out as I use to. Some of it is heat related and some is just motivation. When the heat kicks your *** all day at work you're usually not motivated to get in the garage and do anything. LOL

One problem I have is if use the food side of refrigerator I can use water but won't be as cold or have cooling affect. Now if run it in the freezer side I would need to run anti freeze in cooling lines and would need to find pump the could do that. Plus not sure if want antifreeze in ( even in seal system ) in my freezer with food stuff but would give best cooling affect. I think also if I dip the copper cool in a plastic container and freeze the block it would better cool the coil but afraid might crush the coil also. Biggest issue is the wife and taking a 1/4 of the freezer for a homemade a/c system. We have that thing is packed tight. A lot of thought and brainstorming going on.

Re: My "Shop"

Out in the garage thinking of some ideas. The only idea I can think of is a fan in the screen door

I keep this door clear at all times and thinking it would act like a blower door getting hot air out of the garage instead of cooling the garage.
Option B is to put a wall or window unit right above the door.
e4348a218fe74ee717ac47a4ea094155.jpg
I'm not sure I want to drill through a 8 inch cinderblock wall to put a vent also there's an 8 inch high lintel that runs above the door. Those lentils run approximately 8 inches on each side the door and 8 inches above the in Florida construction. I thought about it today using one of those portable AC units that is on the ground and has a hose ducted to the outside but the problem is where my going to put it. Every inch of space in the garage is spoken for and you don't want to and see how much **** I have in my attic.

It's approximately 1030 and here are the readings.

I hear you loud and clear on the motivation point. After a 10-12 hour day at work it is very hard to get the energy up to start a garage project after dinner.
Most of my work waits for the weekends these days.

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

taumac, the two heat radiators in your garage are the ceiling and garage door. If your attic is 130-degrees it heats up the ceiling sheetrock to that temperature and then radiates that into the garage. Six inches of insulation up there makes a huge difference. I would wait for winter and then only do it in the morning. If your garage door gets hit by the sun during the day, it too turns into a radiator (an even better one than the ceiling). My driveway is light gray and it was 140 degrees in the sun the other day when it was in the high 80s in the shade. If you have an infrared thermometer (Harbor Freight has them for $20) you can check out the radiant temperature of your inside garage surfaces.

When your garage ceiling and door are insulated, you can open it up in the morning to drop the temperature to the coolest of the day and then close it up. You'll have several working hours before the garage heats up. Of course this doesn't do anything for the humidity so it won't be as good as having AC but you won't pass out as quickly. Just a hint about getting older -- you won't become more tolerant of the heat and humidity as you age. Ask me how this 70-YO knows.:Freak:

Hey Gerard, you have got to get a metric tape measure. Feet and inches look kinda strange to me after going metric some 30 years ago.;)

Who on here uses tape measures??? I usually use my hand or finger, or a good eyeballing. Like they say" Guess twice and cut once!!

Bob, you are 100% correct on the attic. I know that is one of the issues with this house. I have 3 strikes against me

Strike 1 I have a dark charcoal roof.

Strike 2 A ridge vent that doesn't seem to be working as good as it should. It's open but can't see light shinning through like others.

Strike 3 not enough insulation in my attic.

I'm out

Flip side is my roof is has 5 yrs until the 20 year mark and it's getting fully striped and re-shingled. At that time I will add 2 dome vents ( maybe solar power fans) to help vent hot air. I already added gable end vents. I thought of putting fans at each end but if the pull too much cfm then can pull air-conditioned air from the house. That wouldn't be a issue but we all know how leaky Florida homes can be. No vapor barriers poorly insulated and not sealed. These houses that were built in the mid 80s weren't built with any efficiency.

Two out of the three issues will be solved with the reroof being done. I've had quotes of $1000 to blow insulation into my attic. I just really haven't have the finances to do it cause life pops up and money ends up going in other places. Sometime in the near future I plan on having a company blow a lot of insulation in my attic.

I'll tell you this much I am so glad that my garage is in the state it is. I have no real pressing projects I have to do but projects I want to do. I mean none of the new projects are keeping the garage from functioning or keep me from parking my cars in the garage. I believe that's the first time I can say that and I don't know how many years. They only problem I have with working there early in the morning is I never being good at working outside when the morning. I'm pretty good after in the morning do has burned off but for yardwork like mowing the lawn I tend to mow in the afternoon because I don't like the freshly cut lawn to bake in the sun cause it burns.

That's the truth. I usually get only a day to do any garage stuff. Typically, Sunday in running errands, getting all the lawn mowed, any yard work completed and after that I'm dead. I try to get done around 3 or 4. Get trash ready, do quick clean up I garage, pull vehicles in and close up shop by 5. It's shower time, dinner and a relaxing Sunday night with the wife until Monday rolls around again.

I can't remember when a few years back or so ago I would pull all nighters are here cleaning and organizing and doing **** in the garage. Now I'm like screw this. I'm going to spend time with wife and bed by 11:00. The heat has really taking its toll on me pass few years.

It's starting to be a little fall like here. Ya'll can work on my projects. :lol_hitti

Fall? Lost me?

You mean the license plates are changing color where you are? That's the first sign the season is changing from summer to tourist -- happens down here in November.:Freak:

All the snowbirds coming already.... Bring some cooler weather with ya. LOL. It's crazy we went from almost 2 weeks of solid rain to the past few days of hot as balls weather. I'm thinking of moving where it's 60-80 and low humidity. LOL. It's too bad the housing market ***** so bad that I'm so upside down on my house that I can't even move move if I wanted to.

To be quite honest I like using metric especially on cars. I find it so much easier. Although, I'm not good at weight, distance and liquids.

YES SIR, I will drop and give you 20. LOL. It's funny cause at work I don't mind the rain and heat as much. Maybe cause I don't have a choice and job needs to get done. At home I have a choice and while I can get it done when needed the garage has been slacking.

Re: My "Shop"

I'm do some projects about house this weekend. I replaced the fan blade brackets on patio fan, installed a new MB fan, and replaced both dining room and corner pendant lights. Then while replacing the fan In my front room I took from MB it hit me.

It's been really too hot to get much done in the garage and that's the outer man cave ( 5 Stitches Garage. so the front room is my inner man cave (aka 5 Stitches office). Does anybody see where I'm going here? I looked and said I can make it my inside tinker room. I LIKING it. It would have vintage Craftsman tool boxes, cool signage and have AIR CONDITIONING.

Room right has a door to kitchen, bedroom and living room but I could add a wall and have a 11x11 room. This room has been catch all room since moving it. We thought game room, man room, my FIL has what he calls a mud room. It's a place with couple comfortable chairs and the hooch. Like a parlor or drinking room.

Sooooooooo, I call the wife in and tells her " Hey honey I got a GREAT idea". I preceded to tell her my great idea and long story short it not happening. LOL

Re: The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Women (wives especially) are a little possessive about the house. They may not say outright "no", but they express it as "I don't like that".
I am sure there would be no tool boxes, vintage or otherwise in "Mrs Spencer's" house.
However anything beyond the back deck that is under roof, is MINE.

Best Regards
Herb
