Nice job. I would maybe add a strap or something to keep the bottles from moving around and falling by accident.
I used a steel wire with eye hooks so mine doesn't fall. And it's removable. My cart needs an overhaul but I made it with cheap or scrap parts.

Thanks, I'm thinking of something to keep bottles secure. I used bungee cords on previous cart and looking to do different this time around.

The row of Craftsman cabs look great now and those drawers line up perfectly with each other. I'm it does feel good every time you look at it.

Also, very nice job on the welding cart. Do the bottles wobble any bit when moving the cart? Any thoughts of some horizontal strips to make sure they stay standing all the time?

I assume it will get the Craftsman gray paint job.

It feels sooooo good to look at that row of boxes now. I'm thinking of something to secure them. They do wobble and I used bungee cords on other cart. They are 2 small tool boxes I have one for turbo torch and one for O/A so once I figure out what I will use I can make some rack idea for tanks.

Of course it will get a gray paint job. LOL anything else just wouldn't do. LOL

Here's more pics and info for you.

The locking method for this kind of bottom is like this. You flip up the door and as the push the door back there's a second piece of the door that pushes up a locking bar which unlocks the drawers.


Usually what I do is unhook the door from back piece

I do this cause I don't want to open the bottom door every time I want to open a drawer.

My beautiful wife and I took a mini vacation to St Augustine for the weekend. It was a beautiful weekend with St Augustine celebrating its 450th anniversary. On our way there we hit a small flee market and I found this


It's a 1/3 hp block grinder. It's all complete with the light and shade, the cooling tray, the glass shields are in great condition and all the rubber feet are still there. The grinding wheels look new if only slightly wore on the left one. Only issue I found is this?



Looks like someone switched out the switch to use bigger light. I'm not sure but I'll look more into it.
All in all paid $55 for it. Alittle more than I would have liked to but compared to other one I picked up for $30 iirc this one is in much much better shape.

New one.

Great score on the block grinder, that will be a nice addition to the shop, also that row of Craftsman boxes is great and it is awesome that the drawers all line up. You are really turning this place into a great functional shop. One suggestion on securing the bottles would be to weld a hinged strap to the side of the cart and put some big magnets on the strap so it will hold the bottles still.

I'll agree with you on the newer stuff. The older boxes where well built plus it's seems that even vintage boxes are getting over priced themselves. Many will say that the gray/red boxes where some of the best looking boxes made even through company's like MBC, Proto and others where better made.

Thanks, after I saw I walked around thinking if I should or not but decided to go back and get it. I needed a twin for my other one. LOL. The shop has taken a turn I'm feeling with the newest box in place. I believe I have collected all the boxes I wanted and honestly have room for. It's taken years but think I'm at the final layout. I can't fit anymore toolboxes and can't change the layout anymore than how it sits currently. That's really hard for me to accept cause I've always didn't take NO for a answer. I always felt I can make it better, store more stuff, make it more efficient.

Thanks, that's my thought also one wire, one grinding, old Dayton think will be buffing, and B&D might turn into my grinder sander.
Idk about that cause I got the Ryobi and small delta sander. Maybe B&D I can get some scotch bright wheels for?

LMFAO..... You know I wish it was a dream. Lately I find myself reverting to old plans or layouts for things. I tried some ideas especially on the craftsman bench ( which I'll post soon ) only it go back to some of my original layouts and placement of stuff cause that design worked the best. After all the years of doing this I basically maxed out this particular garage.

We have no plans to move anytime soon being we have family and jobs are here. We just moved wife's parents down the block in December so until there gone we can't move. We are also upside down on mortgage so until market turns around and my house is worth something again we are stuck in this house.

A lighting update

I decided I need better light over the sink/bench half of the back wall. I went to box store and picked up a 8 ft track lighting track. I had a bunch of lights I collected over the years which I got for free when a friend close her gallery.

Now what I did on the HF bench is use a dimmer. It has 3 levels and off.

It allows 3 plugs to be plugged. This came from my kitchen when I decided to upgrade to LED under cabinet lights. To supply power to tracks I have 2 of theses.

I know them simply as live ends the have a plug at one end the other plugs into track
So here's the finished look.


And mood lighting lol.

I also decided to take 2 spot lights apart and changed how the pivot so I can pivot and swivel them on the vise.


I can separate the HF and just dim those lights and put sink on its own switch. I still controlling my lights and small fans through this.

One drawback of the track lights is they get VERY hot. They use halogen bulbs. I still have all the fluorescent in the ceiling but it's nice to have alittle task lighting.

Your lighting looks fantastic Gerard, you right they do throw out some heat but wont be bad for the winter though.

I completely understand being locked into your current location for some years to come. I am in the same position for different reasons but understand the issue. But, I also bet you will continue to find ways to maximize your available space. Whether they be small or large changes, progress never stops unless we stop ourselves.

After seeing what 1/2 Cup did to make a dedicated wood shop it has got me thinking myself about putting up another shed and dedicating it to specific tasks or specific storage. LOL, Yes that vise is due for a better paint job than a attempted last time on it. In my defense, I did have my Prentiss 19 there but long handle kept hitting top drawer of toolbox dinging up the trim. I decided to reevaluate my vises and location. I love my Shop King there but I really like using this Columbian D44. The Prentiss 19 is good vise but fell more as a speciality vise being the design and size of it.

I'm sure I'll find more ways of reorganizing stuff. Just can't fit more tool boxes even through I want to find one more matching 3 drawer. I have no idea where I would put it but got a idea in head but need 4 total to do it.

HOA states NO sheds or fences. If that ever changed I'm sure wife and I would both agree a fence comes first before the shed. We always wanted a fenced in back yard for privacy and for the dog to run. We knew that when we bought house we couldn't but love the house and area. We saw this house on market few years earlier but didn't buy it. We where looking and it reappeared and bought it. We felt like it was meant to be cause usually don't get to buy same house twice.

I decided to do a small project tonight that been bugging me since I built it. The sink bench.

It's just looked plan ugly over here and I had the pieces buried on other bench mainly the hardboard top that went to this bench. I been using it to cover new bench on the Craftsman. I pull it off other day.

I also got a newer faucet curiously of a friend that replaced hers with a newer one. Even got new hoses with it.

After cutting the hole for the sink and installing new faucet here's the final look.


This pic gives you good idea of how much this wall is recessed. It's a good foot. The HF bench has a 20in top and sink has a 24in top.

Still got plenty to do back here.
Patch holes is back.
Finish plastering drywall
Paint walls, top and cabinets
Plus finish end of cabinet off and install door in last opening.

If your back on Page 1 you got a lot to catch up on. LOL. When I did that wall I started from the top and worked down giving just enough space to fit bins and buckets. I wish I did had more space from floor to bottom of first shelf but that's the way it all worked out. Those shelves where in the garage when I bought the house although they all went on that particular wall. They where moved, cut, and spliced to fit that wall. I often thought about tearing down that wall and redoing it but I wouldn't change much from that layout. Funny enough is that wall is one thing that I did in this garage that hasn't changed over the years. It's work very well over the years.

LOL, No worries there. Actually, I was browsing Google for some homemade carts or storage ideas and saw some of my stuff on other sites. I thought it was cool and weird in same moment. Cool that it was shared but weird cause I wondered how it got there being it wasn't on GJ. I did Google search of 5 Stitches Garage and taumac and wow. Long time back Alexbn921 and I where talking about a bench and about how to I mounted stuff down to my bench. At the time the best idea was just a basic C clamp. Since then I been thinking of a mounting system. Today I started it and done enough to show the idea I came up with. I calling it my universal bench mount system.

It started with a uniform hole spacing. I used this strip with holes already in it.

Then I drilled holes on edge of the bench. Drilling every other hole.

Now I made my first plate. This is 3/4 ply about 12" x 12".

Now since this is going to bolt my one of my big vises down there will be 4 bolts holding each vise down. I also drilled multiple holes so I can move right or left of needed.

I drill 3 holes in the plate for this vise. I used 2" carriage bolts. I recessed them in the plate.


Now I bolted the vise to the plate.

Then the plate to the bench


I used 2" 3/8 bolts with washers.


Now the main reason for this idea is I have many vises, grinders and sanders. The pain is if you have a vise in one location to drill holes and bolt it down. Change vise drill more holes and so on and so on. Now the bench top starts to loo like Swiss cheese. This system mount a vise to a plate and plate to the bench. No more needing to drill new holes if I switch vises, find a new vise, or move a vise.
Here's some examples of the hole patterns of my vises.










Now most of these vises I havnt used cause it's been PIA to clamp them down. Now beside the big vises I have some smaller plates to use smaller stuff on.

Now I bolt these down and as thinking 2 bolts on these should be ok and as long as the plate has this hole spacing on it I can bolt it anywhere on the bench.



Now even if I don't move my 2 biggest vises on the bench and DP I end up with less than 4' of useable bench.

And if I clamp down the grinders I have no room.

So this idea I can easily unbolt the 4 bolts and take vise off and store it away. Now I take grinders off the bench I now have the full 7 ft of bench to use.


This makes my bench so so much more useable and flexible.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. This idea started awhile ago when I thought of a table with a top made of expanded metal.

The table was gonna be 24" by 40" that would fit between sink top and toolbox and welding cart.


I planned it as a mobile table I can mount grinders, saws and sanders on one table all bolted down without C clamp. It was a great table idea. It's same idea Herb got with the table he bought.

Unfortunately, even with smallest 2" casters I didn't have enough between top of toolbox and top to fit it without raising whole sink bench top. Then I would have to raise HF bench top and honestly it's to high as it is and raising to didn't make sense. So in the end lost 1 of the 3 cart/ table projects. I'm okay with that considering all the changes made on sink wall and craftsman bench only to lose 1 table.

Yes taumac, I like your idea of the plates for different vises and it does make your beach more user friendly. I think I might steal your idea and modify it a little for my use. But a great idea. I love it.

Thank you, I was only able to make the one vise plate but idea can be taken so much farer. In time my thinking is anything can be mounted this way from bench grinders to sanders to a just about anything.
