Did your wife buy that for you and paint it?:lol_hitti

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Nope! But that's just as bad or worse than the craftsman 526 I found painted with a paint brush. I would hate to see how bad it looks in person. LOL

Another box taumac? Where will you find room for it if you did get it? I guess the wife's car doesn't really need to be inside.

Oh ****!!! If wife's wasn't in there I have room from all sorts of stuff. Even better if I had a nice detached garage/shop behind the house I can have the place ALL to myself.

Re: My "Shop"

Well after many many many sleepless nights, hours of just starring at this wall, and just to many "what ifs" to count I finally came to some decisions on the Wall of Craftsman. I decided to sell everything and move to a condo.

JUST KIDDING...... LOL!!!! Im dying in this house and wife's gonna put my ashes in the center drawer on the craftsman 10 drawer chest. LOL. I was thinking about some previous projects and sometimes you can improve on things and sometimes you try new ideas but just revert back to the way you had things. Example is the electric.
4b4ba5acf970bca9184708d7b2026280.jpg

When I did this I thought of every what if and came up with best layout. That said trying to change it now would just be a waste of time so I'm just gonna have to work around it. I did so many trial layouts its not funny and even tried a idea that Shopnut used in his shop. After all that I decided on one that would give me greatest flexibility for future additions. Previously, I find a item and do my changes to fit it and next item I found I repeated the process all over again. Now, I'm making the room for my new stuff before I even find it but I do know what EXACT boxes I'm looking for and EXACTLY what will be done when each is found. I don't think I ever prepared like this but than again I didn't know exactly what I wanted either.

The passed 2 nights I worked at all details about the bench. I really couldn't do this until I decided of tool box layout. Do I do bench with legs, floating bench, float bench with mobile bench under it, full on mobile bench. All these where options and each one had its pros and cons especially when it you throw in all the tool boxes I have on that wall and my future plans. I threw all that in a blender and came up with this for my bench.

Yep it's my old friend the floating bench. I really should call it the BIG *** SHELF but shelves store things and benches are work surfaces. I just it depends on how much work you actually been doing cause lately I could call it a shelf. LOL. I did cut bench down from 8' to 6' 8 cause that's the largest I could make it. Same old design but now I used construction adhesive to put frame together so this one won't be coming apart but too is screwed down. I used same idea with the brackets.
d0b008b38001ab41d5cf79dba1d4a5fc.jpg
668a6a411219ac4bfdcc87e86146643d.jpg
They are 13" by 11" brackets. I still got the right one to do but needed to add other standard and ran out of tapcoms.

I find it funny out of all the bench designs out there I keep going back to this floating bench idea. My father just built this bench.
25c35b90ea8c51c330b1165ea7843e91.jpg
It's has shelves 4X4 legs and is rock solid and works great in his garage but that doesn't work in my garage. I think I MIGHT over complicate things just a tad. Well hopefully by this weekend get some more work done on this place and get this place back together

Re: My "Shop"

I forgot to post this picture earlier. I really hate working with PT wood sometimes but for some reason made frame out of it. After fully drying in my garage the boards twisted so had to break out the BFW.

Well I think we stop reading about your garage until you paint that wall.:lol_hitti

You mentioned Tapcons. Have you considered the number of holes you're putting in the block wall? May I suggest putting full height furring strips, 24"oc, over newly painted wall and using those as your modular mounting system. Another idea would be use something like the Closemaid track system. This would allow for endless variations and they even have 16" deep brackets.

I'll let you get back to your garage and painting.

I like that floating bench you keep using and am impressed it will handle the stresses you've put it through. Saying that I'm with Shorty, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!! paint that wall, You will never have a better chance and it would do wonders. While you have the paint out toss some on those shelves and that bench as well.
Thank you in advance,
JB

P.S. While Shorty was a little indirect with his requests for you to paint the wall I'll just come out and say it, paint that wall for the love of all things garage related. All in fun.:lol_hitti

The wall has 2x4 from floor to ceiling as my furring. I used 5 tapcoms per board. I believe it's close to 24" OC. The extra are for where 2 chest bench fell on wall. This is why sometimes I wish I can start over fresh with all new but that's time and money. So many remodels have been done and really have to see this place in person is see some of the issues. I'm gonna have to may a gathering at my house one day.

The floating bench has really held up surprisingly well considering the weight of the drillpress places and just the bench weight itself. I would consider it a light to medium duty bench. To take some the bounce out sometimes ill wedge some 2x4 between tool boxes and on the bottom of the bench. Of course the shelf needs paint the bench needs paint but right now I'm in the building phase. The wall I really don't see why I should paint the backsplash. I plan on running pegboard from the entry door to the front of the garage and from bench top to new shelf. Of course I will paint the 2 x 4's

Hey, I thought you were going to buy a condo and give up your shop.:lol_hitti

LOL, Sometimes I think about it. Remember how I said in one of my posts that I have a garage or a shop idea for everywhere? Yep, my ex-sister-in-law has a condo apartment in Merrit Island Fl. It's a 3 bedroom apartment with bottom floor as a community garage. You have your own spot with a storage area for stuff. Last time I was there I figured out a plan that if we lived there what set up I would have. LOL

Ha! thought that too. In fact when that joke was first mentioned I had a fleeting moment of thought about how cool it was going to be to watch the birth of max utilization of the available space. I know Gerard would find creative ways to turn a condo garage into much more than I could imagine.

But glad to see you back to working on your garage and the new wall! Can't wait to see it come to life.

Not going to poke about the painting either. I have no room to criticize given how m walls look.

Keep up the good progress.

Thanks man, since I drive for a living and see many many garages and house designs. I've seen townhouses to multi million dollar homes and always think of how I would do each.

Yes a get together at your place would be great. It could be a flashlight party. For every pegboard hole we shine a light in and it's not painted, you take a drink. Every one that is painted, we take a drink. :spit:

I find inspiration for my garage in many places. Tonight, me and wife had to run by her job to do few things. She is a day school teacher and in her room was this.

It's the coolest things I seen. Now funny part is wife started this job after I designed my bench mounting system but if you look at it closely it has same holes to move the vise. LOL Now if I build a bench I'm gonna copy this idea.

Gerard

That bench should work great in your next home, the condo. I could also use one in my Nursing Home room. I could at least sit my coffee on the bench, but I would need one of those foam can covers for the Killian's.
My suggestion is we just stay where we are now. Somehow I don't think we would make the best of fellows in either location!!

Best Regards
Herb

Maybe you ought to consider becoming a "space saving consultant". You might find yourself a new profession that pays well for what seems to be your natural talent. That isn't a joke. You might have more work than you could handle.

I've been asked to do couple of friends garages and have considered doing this for a living. I really do enjoy it and do believe I have knack for it. I don't know if that kind of profession is around in my area? I know that I tried designing my fathers, FIL, and few others garages. They like mine but none have really taken the ball and run with it.

It's funny that you said about sizing up condo garages, etc. - I do that whenever we're on holiday.
They're not usually very wide, but some of them are quite deep - the one we stayed at last weekend was actually about 2 (medium sized) car lengths deep.

I really like the idea of a 2 car tandem garage. I've seen I few on here and think they are very interesting. If say a standard garage is 20'x20' usually and you make it a tandem. I'm guessing minimum it would be 10' to 12' wide by 38'to 40' deep ( guessing ) that would give one very long wall for deep shelves or tool boxes under 2' to put stuff. Taking my garage stuff for this example My Craftsman wall is 13' and HF wall plus lateral file and welder is 12' so 25' and still have 15' left over for other stuff like compressor, fridge, gen set, mower etc. I could make high rim shelf around whole garage for bin storage which would give me approximately 90 linear ft 2, deep storage. I would think there's probably alittle extra space designed I. There's one on here I saw the ran front to back of a townhouse and believe it was wider than 12' and over 2 cars deep with a extra work area in back. I can SOOOO picture me setting up one of those.

The 5 Stitches Garage 20 x 22 in FL

Ok guys, I've been working out the details and things are for once working out the way I had planned. First off one of the main reasons for this change is I wanted layout options and honestly with the bench and vise location on old bench it seemed like I was always working at the end of the bench right at the door. Many times people hit the arm or if working wife would peek out of door to see if safe to come out. Moving the bench down just seems logical and also cleared up some of the pathway to inside.

The big cabinet swap to the lateral file freed up 3ft of floor space and 6ft of height allowing me to extend the lower shelf over 5 feet adding needed storage and put the 9 drawer bottom with its craftsman family on one wall. Yes, the tool box was lonely and wanted to play with its brothers. LOL. I then wanted for the most part to keep everything under that shelf as mobile as possible. Ok the floating bench isn't mobile but the bottom roller is so it easy to move it out and put chair in and sit and work at my bench.
b7074873cab58a34cdbf8e9de4abb8c1.jpg

Now the bench was cut down to 6'8" which I didn't like losing valuable work space but if I use the bench with one vise and DP is still allows for suitable work area for projects. One of the biggest things is I needed to move these toolboxes on the craftsman wall as needed. Say I find another chest or bottom roller I didn't want to rebuild entire wall but simply reconfigure it quickly. So here's my layout options

Option 1:
9552f6850a70080923e759563ee41cd0.jpg

b8eed22586fbe3f16c70fab3f5617f99.jpg

Option 2:

5ed5b56fef5ac8ec900b6025ca48e4b6.jpg

728691002ec8d82e9aaba90781d32bcd.jpg

bfe331c6c0e710dc67d64dd0b1f3ff99.jpg

This option gives me ton of space behind chests on left to hide stuff.

cb0e193ac96869875a3441cad5803a9c.jpg

Option 3:

Chest go on top of boxes (until I hang them on wall) and gives me open area on end.

7efa046a2a7f144fbbe1e152de2dc258.jpg

d172d13a84ab8936bedd1124e4ba274c.jpg

This gives me area to plug in 3 items.

d04b53c968f1380d0008a25487314040.jpg

Much much more work to go on this wall but at least I'm moving in a forward direction.

Option 3 with that extra space to place one of your carts of rolling tables looks great and versatile.
The whole change is coming along great.

The garage/storage consultant idea is not far fetched either. And not just to do whole garages but some folks need help with just basic storage layout like you did with tubs and pails.

Gerard, I receive mail flyers several times a year that are basically ads for home improvement businesses. One of them, HOMEPROS GUIDE always has garage makeover ads. I bet you could start a side business without quitting your day job. The only drawback is that most people who pay for garage makeovers don't want anything but the most expensive solutions. It might make you ill to have to install granite countertops and Honduran Mahogany drawer fronts on Lista cabinets. Here's the January-February 2016 Broward County (South Florida) edition cover:

Pros and cons of both as it stands now.

Option 1: gives max access to entry door but lose a spot for a cart or toolbox.

Option 2 : I love the look of the 9 drawer at the end and gives more storage area behind chest but sticks out alittle far unless I notch the lower 2x4 out to recess it another 1" 1/2 and lose and spot for a cart or tool box.

Option 1 and 2 give the most uncluttered feel. With only the DP and vise above waist height.

Option 3 : gives me that extra space at end for about anything like a cart or future tool box. I like that. The cart
2c96ae79a8d548853f802079bb5efd5e.jpg
will go bye bye and good pieces of steel will be recycled for future projects. The little gray cart can fit about anywhere or stay on floor cause it's so small.

There is a option 4 also... But throws of the look I wanted.

03669405908c3e6a2f1aef1e13d94694.jpg
4195b8140953f2f2599479f87d5bfcf7.jpg

This give me the option if I find another 3 drawer bottom but lose access to top of chest, I lose a DP idea I wanted to try but gives me wide open area. Many many options but I like having the options to play with also.

Gerard, your last option looks the goods but just let that sit a while and try it first.

Thanks 1/2 cup. I believe the beauty of this design is that I can configure very easily. I know that I want to find another bottom roller and another chest. When that time comes I will easily be able to bring in any piece without hours or days of work.

Option 1p is my favorite. It's option 1 but includes a painted wall.

I think you will like the power strip there.

I really like the openness and symmetry of option 1 but the far right reserved for the cart. Second choice would be option 3.

Are you getting rid of the HF44" roller? What are in the the two Craftman top boxes?

Wow, I wouldn't know where to begin if someone wrote a blank check to do a garage like that. I'm so used to building with stuff found from HD, Lowes, swap meets, and repurposed junk.
