Ok guys I need your opinions here. I tried putting the Craftsman DP in its new home.

It's too freaking tall for MY space. To fit it where I want I would need to take min 3 1/2 inches out of the center pipe and make it flush to casting for belts to work with or without the 3rd pulley installed.

So here's the question? It's a vintage Craftsman King Seeley drill press and from what I seen on eBay go for some big money. Hell seen 3rd pulley good for $150 plus. Do I cut the 4in out of the tube needed to fit where I need it and save it to weld back on if want? 5 inches of the post sit inside the base so even if re weld it the weld won't be seen. Or do I keep it as original as possible? I don't have plans to sell this unit so resell isn't a concern. It's just like my Wall of Craftsman. Yes they are mine and can do what I want but try to keep original as possible and not drill holes or modify at all. P Opinions needed please.

I wouldn't give up that third pully for anything, way to useful for that DP.
I'd cut the post, save the piece like you said and don't look back.

I make the above comment assuming that you are not going to modify the shelf and the drill press really belongs with the CM wall.

Now, if you got rid of some of the totes, you would have room there.:lol_hitti

I'm thinking those yellow bins aren't very vintage so they would need to be relocated. I would set the head at the best and safest operating height for you. Anything stick up would get trimmed. Then slide in place and enjoy a very nice DP.
Maybe a better idea is for me to come get it because the height is perfect for me. :dunno:

I would modify the shelf before the press. One more thought - are you going to put a mobile base on it so you can move it out when you need to work on longer material ? Might not be enough room there tucked in that corner....

Do you really need a floor drill press? I happen to have a very similar one but a bench mount. As you know I am up for trades. You keep the speed reducer.

Just sayin. :dunno:

I think all of the replies are good. But I don't think the DP is going to find it's way to Shorty's or Craptains so if you're not going to build a "west wing" then it sounds like you need to modify the shelve and allow for casters 'cause as GB said, you're gonna want to pull that out at times. I saw the post in the back of your truck and immediately thought you'd picked up a drill press and am happy to see it is just like the press I have, the Craftsman "150", I love that engine turned band on them.

I know this may be sacrilegious but I'd vote for modifying the drill press if everything works and is organized above it and in it's final location. However, this is the 5 Stitches garage, nothing is ever set in stone soo.... Don't mess with the drill press column, make the shelf work around the drill press somehow.

I'm trying to talk him into modifying the base cabinet with a slot in the back so it'll nest around the drill press, cause we know there's no way he'll be able to sleep with the cabinet base sticking out from the rest or the drawers not lining up.:lol_hitti

It'd be a lot of work, but how cool to roll cab out to move DP when he needs to.
I really don't think he'll redo the wall of cm, but you never know.

I guess it's my fault for causing all this work for you G.:lol_hitti:beer:

I say you go buy that last cabinet and cut down the totes and set up DP there. Then we can find you another cm box for the drill press stuff.

I see great potential here for multiple chess moves at someone else expense. After reading all previous thoughts I would vote to conjure up your saddest face, tell the wife that because the DP is too tall and too classic to cut, you are just going to have to move to another state and buy a house with enough land to have a walk out basement, attached two car garage and, separate pole barn/shop that the DP will fit into. There problem solved!

PS. Blame all this on whoever gave you the DP.

Or, the simpler version, (when she kicks you out of the house) leave the DP alone and modify the shelf above.

Cutting the pole and lowering the head is not the best idea. Depending on how tall you are you will be bent over when you use the DP. I would modify the shelf above it. And for sure keep the 3rd pulley.

I can do away with 3rd pulley but pipe still would need to be flush at top for belt to work. Drill press WILL be on that wall.

I was thinking of making a low rise dolly for it so still that cut will be under 5in out of the pipe. Still enough for base to cover a reweld if wanted to go that route.

Your right. It is the 5 Stitches it's never set in stone. Just a matter of time energy and patience to do a lot of work for little overall gain. [emoji35]

I love the DP and finally have a good one.

I would not cut the the dp but rearrange the shelves

That's a idea. I thought about that went redoing the wall with new toolboxes. One issue with that is shelf above bench is tight with stuff top to bottom. I do have room to move top shelf. With stuff I have there I would only gain 2 in overall from the ceiling to bottom of lower shelf. Surly not worth all that work of removing everything off both shelves removing the bottom shelf to get to the screws to raise the top 2 in then redo all the brackets holding the top shelf then reinstall bottom shelf. Il would take a full day to get things back and still not all room I need to fit everything.

Don't know if want to trade out At least not at moment. I would like to keep it a floor model but wouldn't oppose a bench top unit.

**** next house I said would like a basement and a oversized 2 or 3 car. The potential then for me to set up would be awesome.

I can't blame anyone but myself. I bought it and been looking for one. I guess I can blame CB for finding it for me.

I'm 5'8 (68in) and DP is 70in. Cutting for wouldn't hurt it but as posted earlier if move the shelves I would only gain 2in. 3rd pulley on there in slow like think iirc 240 rpm and can go up to 9000+. Thing is awesome

I wondering how much a new pipe would be to make it a bench top version? I like the floor unit on casters but think bench top conversion. Then no shelf or drill press mods and the Wall of Craftsman stays intact. Not exactly what I wanted but think it going to have to do. I'll always keep the other pole in case want to make it a floor model again. Hmmmmm, I can use the old pipe to make a stripper pole in the garage. [emoji1303][emoji482]

Hey Gerard, if you do make a stripper pole out of the base, maybe I can talk to Cuda and bring her and her fishnets down for a trial run.:willy_nil

CB, if you modify vintage boxes with said vintage welder, is Shorty going to supply some vintage paint to cover up said modification?

Dan, I forgot the vintage anvil and vise to form the metal.

Yes on Shorty on the coatings, he'll be perfect for that.

Yes on Cuda coming down.:lol_hitti

I'm set for vintage coatings.

Gerard can always invite the invisible neighbor over to test the pole.

Shorty, I can assure you she's not invisible, you just kept missing the call.:lol_hitti
