Wow, no faith in me. LOL

Sounds like yo need to build a new garage............

I wouldn't give up that third pully for anything, way to useful for that DP.
I'd cut the post, save the piece like you said and don't look back.
I make the above comment assuming that you are not going to modify the shelf and the drill press really belongs with the CM wall.
Now, if you got rid of some of the totes, you would have room there.![]()
I'm thinking those yellow bins aren't very vintage so they would need to be relocated. I would set the head at the best and safest operating height for you. Anything stick up would get trimmed. Then slide in place and enjoy a very nice DP.
Maybe a better idea is for me to come get it because the height is perfect for me.![]()
I would modify the shelf before the press. One more thought - are you going to put a mobile base on it so you can move it out when you need to work on longer material ? Might not be enough room there tucked in that corner....
I saw the post in the back of your truck and immediately thought you'd picked up a drill press and am happy to see it is just like the press I have, the Craftsman "150", I love that engine turned band on them.
I know this may be sacrilegious but I'd vote for modifying the drill press if everything works and is organized above it and in it's final location. However, this is the 5 Stitches garage, nothing is ever set in stone soo.... Don't mess with the drill press column, make the shelf work around the drill press somehow.
JB
I would not cut the the dp but rearrange the shelves
I'm trying to talk him into modifying the base cabinet with a slot in the back so it'll nest around the drill press, cause we know there's no way he'll be able to sleep with the cabinet base sticking out from the rest or the drawers not lining up.
It'd be a lot of work, but how cool to roll cab out to move DP when he needs to.
I really don't think he'll redo the wall of cm, but you never know.
I guess it's my fault for causing all this work for you G.
I say you go buy that last cabinet and cut down the totes and set up DP there. Then we can find you another cm box for the drill press stuff.
Do you really need a floor drill press? I happen to have a very similar one but a bench mount. As you know I am up for trades. You keep the speed reducer.
Just sayin.![]()
Cutting the pole and lowering the head is not the best idea. Depending on how tall you are you will be bent over when you use the DP. I would modify the shelf above it. And for sure keep the 3rd pulley.

I see great potential here for multiple chess moves at someone else expense. After reading all previous thoughts I would vote to conjure up your saddest face, tell the wife that because the DP is too tall and too classic to cut, you are just going to have to move to another state and buy a house with enough land to have a walk out basement, attached two car garage and, separate pole barn/shop that the DP will fit into. There problem solved!
PS. Blame all this on whoever gave you the DP.
Or, the simpler version, (when she kicks you out of the house) leave the DP alone and modify the shelf above.
I'm all for that. Me and wife talking lately and said I really wish I had a area or shop to myself. Even another bay in garage would work.

**** next house I said would like a basement and a oversized 2 or 3 car. The potential then for me to set up would be awesome.
I can't blame anyone but myself. I bought it and been looking for one. I guess I can blame CB for finding it for me.

Wife is cursing your ***. LOL no modifications to vintage cabinets will be done.

Hey Gerard, if you do make a stripper pole out of the base, maybe I can talk to Cuda and bring her and her fishnets down for a trial run.
CB, if you modify vintage boxes with said vintage welder, is Shorty going to supply some vintage paint to cover up said modification?

I'm set for vintage coatings.
Gerard can always invite the invisible neighbor over to test the pole.
