Dan, I forgot the vintage anvil and vise to form the metal.

Yes on Shorty on the coatings, he'll be perfect for that.

Yes on Cuda coming down.:lol_hitti

Shorty, I can assure you she's not invisible, you just kept missing the call.:lol_hitti

Thank you Craig. Shorty still thinks I'm making her up.

Alwright, I'm trying to save G's liver and get him out of his beer drinking staring trance.
Hers a solution that I scribbled out on a napkin and Shorty refined.

Build a wall supported shelf that the shelf portion detaches from the wall brackets and sets on top of and is anchored to the unmolested vintage cm bottom box so you can roll out for the bigger jobs.

When your done, roll box back in place, shelf ( that DP is sitting on) engages the wall bracket, angle braces are attached and the shelf s lifted off the box just enough that you can pull it out for mobile cart use.

My 2 minute version figured on turnbuckles/ bolts to elevate shelf.

Shorty went gold and used air/electric actuator move up down.

I think this would be a safe way to transfer DP from wall to box top as that sucker is heavy and can be unweildly. Then you'd be blaming me when it fell over hurt you, or worse, broke the drill press.:lol_hitti

And we can build a smaller base plate if needed.

Your idea of sourcing a shorter bench top length pole is a good one. I find they are readily available on CL and tool auctions. You may just find the same diameter pole from another make DP but could still be usable for you and let you save the original uncut floor model for future use or sale. A little patience and diligence at searching ads and I bet you find a deal.

Yes having a issue with that. I really can't afford to buy one now even though the guys found one on EBay. Other issue is that the columns I see say 2 3/4 but the original is approx 2.710 or 2 5/8. To add to that the column holds the 3rd pulley and its milled to fit that pulley.

It would be very very easy and cot effective just to cut the original, save other piece and just weld it back together. If needed I could always have CB run it on his lathe mill it ( if needed) but sand and polish it up and wouldn't look like it was welded. Like I posted before I'm not looking to resale it or make money off of it. I got it for good deal and the selling 3rd pulley alone could cover the DP plus make money. I not about that. I just wanted a cool DP to have for the Craftsman wall.

Gerard, as long as you didn't borrow the drill press, make it your own and put it where you want. I do like the idea of a floor model over a bench-top. I know there are ways to get around it but I've run out of depth using my bench-top several times, especially with an X-Y drill press vise.

You could probably get by with a vintage 1/2 aluminum body hand drill. Get rid of the floor DP and stop worrying about how it will fit.

:lol_hitti Gotta give you points for trying Shorty.

Gerard may have been tempted to take up one of your many generous offers of a good home for the DP, but I am quite sure that he has dismissed any inclination to do so purely in the interests of your personal safety...

A floor standing DP is a relatively top-heavy unit which could easily topple when moving it and we all know what happens when you attempt to move heavy items. :scared::eek:

Stay safe my friend. :D

Gerard, while I'm on here typing, I may as well add my 2 cents worth...

My first thought was to raise the shelf (I know you'll probably never require the full working size - but you'd be pretty annoyed if something wouldn't fit under it by the amount that you shortened it!).

If you do decide to cut the shaft, I agree with Craptain -cut it off the bottom.

JMO :dunno:

Look what I stumbled across, a picture of Gerard after thinking and staring at the WOC for a couple of hours…..or years. :D

He finally figured out what to do with DP.

I think I've come up with a solution based on Craig's turnbuckle idea.

Attact Unistrut or similar on the wall. Place a bar or turnbuckle for a bottom brace. Use a turnbuckle for the upper brace. I found they have turnbuckles with removable pins so this allows for quick release of DP from the wall brace when you want to pull out DP and roller. To pull out roller by itself, turning the upper turnbuckle lifts the DP up enough to clear roller. Two collars will be needed around the post.

On the turnbuckles, they would have to be at a angle and the shelf have a pivot point. With how you have it, that would work, turnbukles would just have to be Ridgid at u strut and DP collar, otherwise they would just pivot down on Gs toes.

We're getting there.some Acme thread may be in the works.

Instead of the lower turnbuckle a bracket with a 90 or a gusset on the bottom side would keep it from lowering. I was thinking with the right triangulation, the upper turnbuckle would support the DP in the up position.

Well CB made some demands of me and Shorty this weekend to make sure stuff is getting done in our garage. Well Friday night was out due to a family obligation Saturday was out because of me and my wife went out and Sunday was doing some chores around the house. Although I did make some forward progress on the drillpress. I decided definitely that I'm cutting it and today I started to clean it up.

Cleaned.

Unclean.
d758e04bb62f632ea69de4cafdd144e0.jpg

I tried using some simple green but it doesn't seem like it was working ended up using purple power which seem to remove the built-up grit and grime really quick. I also did clean up some of the lift table

7dd8b58c7a8ca9940124b38164fa8829.jpg

I have to admit it's pretty freaking awesome not to see a drill a hole in it. The motor I'm not sure what I'm going to do because of the pitting on the silver band.

0b78521a226c5322ca123833ca054e6a.jpg

I think the motor and the drill press head is going to clean up well so might rethink my painting idea and try to match the original color and repaint the lift table and the bottom base.

And maybe both of ours will be done before shorties lift is operational. LOL

Saying that won't "lift" his spirits it'll only "hoist" his level of despair. :lol_hitti

Hey Shorty, if you want to wait until I get down there in February, I'll get it up and running for you.:D

Well, it's been rough couple of weeks for me lately. FIL went into hospital but now he is ok and back home. I got in accident in work truck which was no fault of my own. I was sitting at a light waiting for car ahead to make left turn and was rear ended by another car doing about 30+ mph. Guy was sighted and ticketed for reckless driving. Went to ER and got X-rays and CAT scans and everything was still in its rightful place. Wife insisted to the doctors at that must be a couple screws loose and to look farer. Accident happen last Tuesday and spent rest of week and Labor Day recovering from whiplash and lower back spasms. Those all went away and went back to work this past Tuesday.

Well enough of me onto the garage. Over the past few weeks made some small changes.

I got new cabinet in place.

Still need to make dolley. This I decided in going to hold everything welding and this includes getting rid of some totes I had odds and ends metals pieces in. Still needs a lot or sorting but liking its location, drawer sizes and function.

In return I made this my new cabinet for nut, bolt and misc stuff.
ced2bfe716ec6ab16cec320969b47f7d.jpg

I also got last tool chest on the wall of craftsman.

e8c39edadad4777ae6ac1825592b9d96.jpg

And finally (thank you for all the input) decided faint of DP.

d61ca37e44d36f89a74103a8ae111097.jpg

It will eventually go on the wall bracket which then can move to the roller below for move around as needed.

I cut the tacks on new welding cart and put it in storage. I cut the spot welds out the the center shelf on AV cart and raised it to accommodate the welder and tanks on the bottom.

34e54765283ba37c56f6ebcb68f57cb7.jpg

This is just a trial run for this cart. Not sure if this cart going to work as planned and if not I'll reweld other back together and use AV cart as mobile table. I was just trying to gain space with one less cart.

Lateral file is still in middle of garage still undecided faint of it right now.

da5507bfd28d5145849f987683763f3a.jpg

The DP has a new home just waiting on when it will be picked up but doing some work to new one so no rush.

Now onto my newest project.

2d7d1f3efdf919638a62cfcb08fafaa6.jpg

I received this Craftsman cantilever from a good friend of mine. I really like these boxes and wanted to put it to use. Unlike most of my portable boxes I have them on the bottom shelf of my mobile worktable.
3dfe047003fd9b688ab748694e19a374.jpg

I use them on occasion but mostly in like ok I need to go work on something and let me get some tools and throw them in and go. Problem was I just threw in what I thought I needed for that job and while there I needed something else needed fixing and I didn't have the tool. Also been working around garage and getting frustrated somewhat of going back to get this or that tool. So I decided to do trial run or a experiment which is can I pack the cantilever box with the majority of everything I will need for general repairs? Well I worked on 2 vehicles and brought it to wife's job tonight and besides dropping my stones picking it up I believe this might work out in garage and to throw in back of truck.

82d903230499f11845c95bfc9bc96885.jpg

Around the garage I can use my ikea cart and used a folding hand truck to wheel in around at wife's place. Problems so far it's heavy to lift and ikea cart wasn't made to hold this which weight. The jury still out on how I'm going to handle it but it is somewhat refreshing to have a small toolbox with everything you need right at hand.

Well that's the overwhelming update of the 5 Stitches Garage and life dealings.

I love the drill press. That is a real winner. The metal drawer cabinet is fantastic and it should hold much stuff. I am sure your staying up nights trying to decide what color to paint the cabinet. A good brushing off and sand paper should ready it quickly.
The cantilever box is a lot like the one I got. I am glad your young and strong as I could not lift it full of tools. Looks like your place is brimming with lots of VERY nice stuff. Sorry about the accident, and glad you pulled out without too much injury.

Everything there is looking good!!!

Herb, that comment has a couple of us rolling on the floor laughing our guts out:lol_hitti
He might be awake at nights wondering about his shop, but it's not about painting!

It's some inside harrasment that we lay on G, you can read back in his threads and see some of it.

Sorry to hear about the misfortunes Gerard and I hope you are truly fit for work.

So did you cut the dp column, or did you find another one to use? Whichever it will serve well now.

Glad to hear you are mending from the accident and hope that continues. Good progress in the shop. I like your mods to the welding/AV cart. The drill press looks good in its new home. The cantilever box is nice but I know what you mean about weight. As I get older it prevents me from carrying a box that size. Maybe this will need your creative juices to flow and come up with a completely new design for making that portable without all the lifting?

Good to hear the last brace has been installed on the WOC. I need to do some test powder coating so send the brackets up so I can coat them and you can call the Wall complete.

On the tool box, can you put it on a scale as is and tell us how much it weighs. I think it would be interesting. I see a lot of duplication. How many ratchets are needed? A bit driver with an assortment of bits would eliminate all those screwdrivers.

Thank you for Ms. September.

Gerard, I think Stewart is on to something. Instead of all 3 Craftsman Nextec tools, you could get by with the drill and 1/4" hex impact driver. If you need to drive sockets, a 3-piece adapter set could handle all of them.
Z_xG6tpcpEx_.JPG

I prefer the hex driver so I use hex drive drill bits most of the time. With a hex drive twist drill set, spade drill set and hole saw set you wouldn't need the Nextec drill either. A spare battery would of course be handy.

Herb, it's great to hear from you by PM and posting here. Yeah, I been dreaming about paint but havnt been doing any of it. The guys have been giving me a load of **** about it but I've learned from experience that it's better to get things working and functional and see if that's how I'm going to keep it. Now that's funny right there. Things don't stay the same around here to often but I'm getting to a FINAL layout. I think it's always easier to make it all pretty later. Great to see you back here Herb.

Thanks Craptain. I'm okay to work until I picked up that F@CKING toolbox last night. LOL I ended up just cutting the original column and being done with it. Measured 46 times and thought it all out and one cut at 32". I have few inches in bottom base to raise inch or 2 if needed. It's taller cause bench top column of era I seen on eBay are 30" so it all worked out.

Thanks rmalkow. I'm all good right now until I lifted that damn box last night. I finally got DP settled just doing some minor cleaning and lube to get it better. I love the damn AV cart. It's a great size and height to work on. Although, I might have to build the welding cart cause I don't know if dedicated to just welding I could use it for other projects. I really don't want to get my welder and tanks all covered and stuff from doing other projects so don't know as of yet if the AV cart will be dedicated to welding

I'm got my thinking cap on. I've been researching somethings. Aviation mechanics used to use cantlever boxes these with little carts to pull around the tarmac and aircraft hangers or I should say box is similar to these. So I've been googling some things trying to find a little idea of a pull cart that I can in the garage but also small enough to throw in the back of a truck still working on some ideas but I'm also working on the box to see if it's actually going to work out.
