Photo Storage Site Suggestion

I've seen a lot of references to broken links and deleted albums as many of the formerly free "big name" picture sites have changed or folded. I wanted to offer a perhaps lesser-known site that I have been using for sixteen years(!).
it's Photobase 'pbase'.
I use it for just miscellaneous stuff and have many galleries of totally unrelated pics. The first few years were free, but they started charging a fee at some point... I have been paying 23bux a year for ten years or so. The fee has not changed. I think that's for a gig.... and I've got lots more than a gig up there.
EDIT: I just discovered that they upped the storage to 2GIGs for the SAME PRICE(!)still $23
Also, the fee could last you longer than a year, based on your usage. Keep your storage amount lower and the time you have paid for *extends*.

They have NEVER lost a pic of mine and I don't recall the site EVER being 'down' in all these years. They don't pester me with offers/demands/spam/sharing ****/policy notices or anything. Actually, they leave me totally alone except for a renewal notice when needed.
I LIKE what they do for me and as importantly, what they DON'T do. They don't bother me, and they don't f-up my stuff.
You can change the layouts and appearance of your galleries if you care to play with css stuff. it's actually very customizable. My galleries are NOT a good example of that but if you browse the other galleries, many folks have pretty elaborate professional displays.
Here is on of my very simple galleries http://www.pbase.com/nufsed/drumbrake
I have no connection to the site other than just being a long time paying customer and a very satisfied one, at that.
EDIT 2: They also have an app for the iPhone which makes uploading pics straight from the phone really simple.

I pay godaddy around $150/year for my own web space. I can host anything I need there and it never goes away. Or I can move it lock/stock/barrel to another ISP and point my domains there. Technical for sure, but I've had pics online since the early 90s.

Yep, I pay about $100 a year for my own webspace as well. It's the best way to go if you have a lot of pics to host and never want them going away.

YES, it is a bit technical though. I manage my own dedicated server from Softlayer, my friend and I split it at $85 a month each.

That being said, for free stuff, if you have Android you can use the google photos (default) camera app and it automatically uploads all your pics (when you are on wifi) to "the cloud".

Then you just login to your google account and go to photos.google.com and they are all there, no muss no fuss, i love it.

no 3rd party linking though...yet...boo....so i save them to my pc and upload them here using GJ uploader.

Re: Photo Storage Site Suggestion

I went to the pbase to check things out. 30 day trial does not include 3rd party hosting. Not trying to be cheap, but I spend days of lunch hours moving my images from PB to Imgur just to discover that we cannot 3rd part here. I did get it to load on other sites, but nothing here.
I just don't want to take a chance on spending all that time to get burned again. $24 a year is cheap. Gladly pay $2 a month. I just want a true trial run first.

Are you wondering if you can link here? Well, let's see
Here's a copy paste of an image URL, note that it does not have the extension type (.jpg, etc)
http://www.pbase.com/nufsed/image/2079325
To embed it I can use the img tag (using Tapatalk) and I only need to append ".jpg" and it does this:
2079325.jpg

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

And before posting it looked like this

Hmm. I have a big google drive account through work. Maybe I should move my photobucket stuff there. I need to look and see how to get the IMG links from photos on there...

With the current cost of terra-byte sized HD I question the need for 3rd party storage.
Just DIY at no added cost and have control.

How exactly do you link to photos on that TB drive when posting on forums? That's really what we're discussing here, not bulk storage locally.

Re: Photo Storage Site Suggestion

I admit I am fairly ignorant on this stuff but was wondering if there is any problem uploading my Apple photos to any of these sites. I take most of my photos now days with my iPhone and ran into a problem with posting photos on another forum. When I used to use my windows laptop I could upload photos from my photo albums to posts but after going to a MacBook Pro it wouldn't work and I had to email photos to myself. Just got to be too much work.
So if I go with on of these hosting sites will I have to convert to jpeg first?
I used to use Photobucket too back when I had the Windows computer but haven't tried to upload to Photobucket since going to Apple and now with their changes I won't again.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

I was just thinking...I wonder if it's possible for Photobucket to tell where the link comes from. You can make the argument that the forums that have links should pay for the service since they are using Photobucket for storage they should have done themselves. Rather than charge (or try to charge) the people who put up the pictures, have some sort of yearly charge to garagejournal or whoever. In turn, the forum would have to generate some more income. There ain't no free rides.

Well said.

But following that logic, shouldn't everyone here then also pay to use this site, rather than use it for free?

That would truly follow your mantra of "There ain't no free rides".

Re: PHOTOBUCKET... What are the best options and alternatives...merged

I used PB for years to store and share my photos until the $399 a year charge popped up. I tried several options and after a free 14 day trial of Smugmug I subscribed to their basic service.

I never thought I'd pay for a picture hosting website but this one is great and easy for me to understand and use. With the discount code I was given the first year was $38.20 which I thought was reasonable.

The website is first class and so is their customer service. There is no limit to the number of pictures or videos you can upload to your page. I thought I would try it for a year and if I decide I no longer want to use it I just don't renew. You can also pay by the month. A couple of pics I uploaded to SM

What are people doing about old threads? Trying to fix them?

Im also going to be burned on this and was thinking it would be far simpler just to start a new build thread since im missing many images.

I see some folks are using Imgur....I thought the first post said they didn't allow third party hosting....what did I miss?

Cut and paste from first post...

-Imgur
TL;DR
NO linking or 3rd party hosting allowed!

Quote:
Stuff not to do

Don't upload gore, "hate speech" (i.e. demeaning race, gender, age, religious or ****** orientation, etc.), or material that is threatening, harassing, defamatory, or that encourages violence or crime. Don't upload illegal content such as child **** or nonconsensual ("revenge") ****. Don't hotlink to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent, warez, or Imgur rip-off sites. Don't impersonate someone else. Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. In my case the threads are done, photobucket had so many of my pictures (15k+) that I could not even download them, the process kept failing. I tried to make smaller buckets, and in the process the software decided to go all "delete" on me. Now I have lost thousands of pictures and there is no way I am going to repost links to several thousand broken ones.

I'm in the same boat. I can't even retrieve my pics from PB to move them to another hosting site either.

Re: Photobucket Just Screwed Me Real Hard

Photobucket has singlehandedly ruined a decade plus worth of threads across hundreds, if not thousands of forums.

So many build logs and how-to guides effectively vanished overnight. What a shame.

I dont have near as many images, but a similar boat on a smaller scale. Basically any picture i took on a phone i have no duplicates.

I have enough to start a condensed version of my build thread which i may do when the situation comes to a head later in the year

Well I can't, as well as several others, so please let us in on the secret.

I had to set all my albums to private so I could see them. Then you can download them to your computer. You still have to do this around all there pop up ads.
You can still use the site for free if you do not share any photos...crazy huh...

Wow, what a mess. I came here trying to get some ideas for my garage. Opened up a bunch of build threads and nada. No pics. Entire builds wiped out. Hopefully in 5 or 10 years this site is back to where it used to be, but I'm not holding my breath.

I was lucky. I only had a couple of hundred on PB. I clicked on each one individually and saved it to my desk top. Then one by one dragged them into my Pictures.

I went through my welding table build thread and edited all the posts with pictures. It wasn't easy because I had captions under all the Photobucket images. I deleted all the ransom demands and reworded the posts to make sense with the GJ images clustered at the bottom.

If you have a paid account, I think you should be good until Jan '18. My photos still show up, last time I checked but I'm still going to kick them to the curb. imageshack.com has much faster uploads and is only $18/year and unlimited photos.

Re: Attention GJers-Check your Photobucket accounts

I just started a thread posting picture from google photos without a problem.

I think the trick is not to use the URL in the address bar when you browse to your picture but instead to right-click on the picture itself and use "Copy image address...". You will get a long *** url that finished with something like =wXXXX-hXXXX. These last url parameter are the resolution of the image and you can change it! This is great so that a high res image can be scaled down to fit nicely in a thread post. For example I'll delete =w1234-h987 and replace it with simply =w600 so that my image is scaled down from 1234x987 down to 600px width (height is calculated automatically).

Google photo is great and cheap. Anyone with different experience?

I use Google Drive for storage, but I have yet to find an easy way to use it as a hosting service AND use it from my phone or iPad. At a PC it is workable, although painful.

Dont know if this is helpful or been mentioned but for smartphone users taptalk app will host your images and post them onto this forum for free and its very easy to do. May not work for everyone but worth a look i bet.

Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

I started using Tapatalk just before the PB explosion, but I have about 900 pictures held ransom. I tried contacting Tapa to understand if they would ever do this to me, but they never replied. I have no clue how they host the photos and whether or not there is a size or time limit to the upload. You are right though, it is pretty awesome and includes an automatic resize. I'm happy to pay them.

--

My hope is some company somewhere creates a program to automatically download and convert all your images to a new service and all you have to do is change the URL slightly (i.e. replace photobucket.com with fredsphotoservice.com and the rest stays the same) I'm still waiting on that. This would seem to be a massive opportunity to gain 100 million users.
