Thankfully, the shed has not fallen on me nor have I been staking out a spot for the bike shed. Been enjoying the summer with the fam. Haven't even touched the shed. I'll get back on it after the 4th.
Plus, no snake sightings!

Happy 4th to you Drives.
I'm oddly haunted by the whole snake hanging. Caught one in a bucket to show the kiddos while mowing today, but gave myself the shivers when I thought I saw one under the laundry basket I picked up in the basement. No, there was nothing there, weird.
On to business. I, of course, relied on photodouche to link my pics. I've deleted most, but I can recreate the thread.
So, imgur? Tips from anyone in the same situation?

SQ: Imgur isn't a good option either cause it has had issues with GJ. here's a thread i started so you and others in your situation might figure out a new plan. luckily i left PB about the time i joined GJ cause i hated all the big pictures and the multy quote with a one word comment taking up pages of quotes. Hence me multy member posting on most of the threads i visit.

here's the link to the PB solution thread and in my first post is what i've done for over 12,000 pictures (I know i post a lot, but had no idea i have a GIG of GJ's memory for my pictures). that way as long as GJ is alive even if i'm not my pictures will be on my threads.

Boiler, just noticed you posted. It's been a busy summer. Now the kiddos are back in school and the shed is coming together. Super slow, but that's what I got.
Anyway, the addition has been framed. I should have a couple hours tomorrow to get some paper on the roof and mess with siding.
I've been taking pics, but haven't dealt with the Photodouche issue yet. I will.
Thanks,

Thanks,

I hear ya' there! My July and August were packed! My son started middle school Aug. 9 and my daughter moved up to Purdue the following week. And my son joined the cross country team so he's busy Mon-Thurs with meets on Saturdays.

I finally got some time in my garage yesterday. I'll be updating my thread tonight. I'm using DropBox and really happy with it. I resize my pics in my DropBox so their file size shrinks dramatically and I don't use as much of my storage space...

Cheers mate!

Site cleared, piers set, and deck built. This is where the giant Vidmar will live. Blocking will be added where the Vidmar corners will rest.

Thanks Boiler,
I posted a sketch of the floor plan way back when. After a year, Sept 22, in the new place I finally brought the big tools home.
Pic one is taken from the doorway looking across the bench location into the addition, which houses the wall of drawers. 5ft Vidmar, flatfile, and card file.
Pic two is the opposite side with my back to the drawers. Shopsmith to the left currently powering the bandsaw. Lateral file for storage. The 40's Cman drill press, the Sawsmith radial, and Atlas metal bandsaw peaking out.

Today began work on the bench and vise planning. I had grabbed this 30 by 50in maple butcher block table top free for this very purpose. First step was to cut the bullnose edges off. It, of course, is too short, so I'll add a foot to the side against the wall made from the old top, a solid core door.
Thinking two woodworking vises, as I have them. The larger mounted to the front of the bench to the right. This will be my universal mounting position for my grinder and the like. The second will mount on the end of the bench.
Any of that sound silly? The pic.

Boiler, 30 wide is great, but I need more than 50in long. I've got a plan to add a foot. That should work nicely.
Mtech, I'm a couple hours down the pike.
Thanks Finally. The change is dramatic. Better than I envisioned. I think it's all about the height. Going up 18 inches made all the difference. Both in useable space and the feel.

Ah, got it. I thought you wanted it deeper and it was going to be against the wall...

You can always hinge the extension and brace it so that you can drop it down out of the way when you don't need the extra length...

I've been straightening my basement hobby shop area to make room for my new bench down there. I'm still trying to decide how I want to redo the wall where the bench will go. I have my outlets in conduit boxes mounted to the wall with peg board in between. Not really happy with it so the peg board is being binned, but I don't want to redo my electrical.

I've got the pieces cut. Got 5in maple strips for the edges and a piece of solid core door for the center. Grabbing a biscuit joiner this weekend. Then the bench will gow to 30 by 61.
Boiler, this bench is going all peninsula style. I got used to being able to work from multiple sides in my last garage. It actually works out to better use of space here too. Plus, I've got a 10in overhang on the back which should be a great spot for storage.
Oh, the 2 vises. They will mount flush with the top, so they shouldn't be in the way. I'll mount a third if I find one. Haha.

If you want a stainless top, I will save one for you. They are 48" by 30" if I remember.

Looking great, glad to see the Vid is still around.

Boiler, some people can do amazing things with pegboard. I'm not that guy. I prefer to just make shelves or stick nails where needed. My last shop was concrete, so I'm excited to be able to hang stuff wherever. Got a few of the random all-metal tools hung. They all work, except for that funky planer guy, but need cords. This way I can grab them and tinker.

Strout, thought you were lost in a sea of galvanized brackets, plastic containers, and empty shelves.
Hmmmmm? I do like stainless. But... wood is just so warm. When are you cruising through?
That Vid has changed my life. Each drawer is the size of my benchtop! That's rediculous.
Thanks again.

Yeah, I generally don't like peg board either, but I will probably order 4pcs of the Wall Control steel peg board for my garage. My basement shop area is going to get a wall cabinet of some kind. i have a few special wall brackets that I need to mount to wall under the cabinet but clear of the work bench when it is raised to standing height. I'll probably just attach 2x4 blocking on the wall to allow the back of the cabinet to clear the conduit and wall boxes. Or I will just make them 18" wide to fit in between like my peg board was.

I am still treading water, the tops are not going to scrap, I would save one for you if you want it, I think I will have either three or five depending on what I do with my configuration. Just let me know and I will put your name on it. They are MDF on the underside and it is thick. Easy to mount from the underside of a cabinet.

Super nice offer Strout! This may sound crazy, but I have to pass. I just don't have the use. I'm happy with the maple and I have no other serious surface. New dining room table? Laundry room? Just won't work.
Pass it along.

So we moved a couch from a friend's into our basement. I was down there and could not hear my wife's screams. I kind of agree once she showed me. What in the hell is that? It's like the size of a finger, undulating, and gross? Never seen anything like that.

I'm sure it's harmless Strout. Walked it about 100 yards up the street before tossing it in the woods.

We have a solid piece. 30 by 62. Drilled and spacers added for a pair of woodworking vises. That's a lot of real estate in a tiny shop, but it's going to work incredibly.

It's looking very spacious in your pics SF. I've been thinking of building a garden shed similar in style to your 8'x4' extension but I can probably get close to 9'x5'.

Did your 8'x4' area feel pretty good space wise before you moved the cabinets in ?

The shed link BMF posted a couple pages back is pretty much what I was thinking in my head so I'll check out GF's thread and the handyman site.

Did you work out what that weirdo finger thing was ?

Cheers GB

Thanks Strout.
Grumble, it's a Pandorus Sphinx Moth. At first I assumed that it was some giant grub, but it had little nubby legs. Never seen anything like it.
With my shed, the 4 by 8 addition was to give the 30in deep 5ft long box a place to live. Next to that lives the 24in wide card cabinet. So that space has 7ft of 30in deep cabinets. The drawers open into the main space.
It's not big. Toss a piece of plywood on the ground and walk around on it. For a garden shed it may just work. Stuffing the mower, snowblower, and long handled tools would get tight.
Keep us posted on the plan.

Glue is dry.
Cut a slab 17.5in wide and added a maple end. This will become the little lathe bench. The lathe is a Craftsman 101, 6 by 18. Perfect size for me and the shed.
I thought 16 would be wide enough, but after a little layout on the floor I went as wide as I dared. The Vidmar drawer just sneaks past.
Looking for ideas here? Do I squeeze it all up on top. I think it can work? Do I mount the motor below and cut for the belt?
I think I'm leaning towards mounting below. It may give a little more room for that pulley arm deal.

Got a minute on the lathe bench. Going timber and built in look. Those nasty brown beat drawers on the end. Craftsman drawers in the middle raised off the floor. Some random old drawers on the far side.

For the lathe motor, the old Delta lathes mounted the motor underneath on a hinged plate. The weight of the motor kept tension on the belt, so I would say mount in underneath on a hinged plate so you can use the motor to tension the belt.

The lathe stand looks really good.

What are you doing for dust control? My 17x19 garage fills with dust even when using the shopvac on the sander. The router makes a lot of dust to go with the chips too.

I have an old set of plans for a shop air filter that uses a squirrel cage fan and furnace filters, two in series on the inlet and one on the outlet. If you want, I can scan them into a pdf and email them to you. Send me a DM with your email...

After spending all day today eradicating the dust from my garage, I'm digging out those plans and building mine as soon as my mom's work table is finished.
