SQ: I also love the truck tool box attached to your shed. you might add a couple pieces of metal or wood on the end of the supports to keep the tool box from moving forward, but that's up to you.

This popped on Craig’s over the weekend. That’s the listing pic.
I’ve been looking for an old surfboard or water skis or something to hang on the garden shed. I passed as I didn’t know what it was and it was beat. It reposted today and I thought maybe I could repaint it as some surf shop style sign. Plus, it was in town.

And the gem of the underside! Any older wakeboard experts? Gave her a scrub and scraped off all the tree sap. Now, where to hang her up. She’s almost 5ft long. Would make a cool high shelf in the house. But again, the wife may have a different perspective.
I’ll post new pics after I get her waxed and shiny.

Heaved this onto the roof of my car and tossed a pair of ratchet straps on it. Luckily it was just up the street. Now we have a new outbuilding. Needed a hinge pin fixed and it’s ugly as sin. So, perfect behind the shop.

Watched a few videos on chrome restoration and had to try out the tin foil. Check out the rear fender on the Twosome! Lower left is rust, upper right is the section someone spray bombed silver, and the lower area is where I went at it with simple green and tin foil. The spray came off and the chrome will actually clean up. There is plenty where the chrome is flaking, but I can live with that. Now, do I just wax it and keep it waxed?

Waxing it definitely won't hurt it. I picked up some Turtle Wax chrome polish and rust remover. I haven't tried it yet, but if it does work, then it could be a good product for you to use too.

Taking a break from the house painting to mess with the bikes. I had picked up an early 70’s Atala road bike last summer. Last week I grabbed a late 70’s Ross for its aluminum wheels and nice tires. That bike had been upgraded and has much nicer components than the Atala. So, it’s all switching over. Just using the Atala frame, as the Ross is giant.
Started the tear down tonight with my fancy bike stand.

The clear won't last on bare steel. The amount of work you put into the Atala is up to you but that's a bottom end frame with cottered crank. Also verify that the wheels and brakes will work together. Many frames used 27" wheels in that era while European bikes had 700C. They don't play together well.

Thanks Wasfast. Definitely not a top tier frame or build. It’s all old school 27’s and work nicely together. The crank is being switched over from the donor bike. Slightly nicer.
What do I do to keep a bare steel look without going full on powder coat? BLO? This is garagejournal.

SQ: I use BLO on almost all my naked steel and I even put it over old painted steel too cause I like it's shine that dulls nicely.

if you want to read more on other methods of coating naked steel might I suggest reading the Vise Repair 101 thread and here's the link. if you don't find what you are looking for just ask and i'm sure one of the guys that has other options will show up to comment. Fluid film works, johnson paste wax in the yellow can and others, but those you usually have to apply more often than BLO.

as far as removing paint i usually use a wire wheel on some type of grinder, but your call on this one cause i've never done a bike frame.

here's my big 185 pound Reed 4c that was sandblasted and had 2 coats of BLO put on it maybe 4 years ago and here's my Reed 2c that was just cleaned and i put on a coat of BLO maybe 2 years ago so you can see how they age. of course these have just been sitting on a shelf so if you use them you might need to wipe on a coat of BLO more often. also be very careful to dispose of BLO or wood stained rags in either a metal covered bin or hang them to dry cause many a garage has burnt down from self combusting rags.

I've not seen anything that was successful for bare metal coating. Powdercoating often gets spider rust lines under it. Regular clears don't stick well to bare metal. There may be an option but I've not seen it.

For a steel frame I would just drop it off at a powder coater. They will sand blast it and then they can clear it. Or you can just pick out a color you like and have it done in a color.

If it was a higher end frame I would go color then a clear powder over that, but just a solid color with UV protection in the powder will save you some money over the 2-coat powder.

A single color bicycle frame shouldn't cost more than $250 for the frame and fork. If you're patient, find out what colors they run regularly for larger customers and piggyback on that run to save money. Most shops almost always run batches of black and bronze if they do any steel fencing, or safety yellow for guarding. A couple local shops here run red and white pretty regularly too.

Prismatic Powders will send you 4 or 5 color swatches free of charge. They have thousands of colors.

Not anymore!!! All the "Yeti cup moms" with toaster ovens have overrun the swatch department so much over the last couple of years that it had to be relocated to a different facility. The swatches are still technically free, but now they charge your credit / debit card a $6.50 shipping fee regardless of how many you order.


Squash, your frame shouldn't cost too much to coat in any color you desire. Rather than clearing the bare steel though, you can choose a finish that replicates the look. (For powder to adhere well and last a lifetime, the prep has to be done right -- and that includes media blasting to give the powder "tooth" or it won't last. Once it's blasted, that will kill any cool bare steel look but replicates exist.)

This is my first full bike breakdown education. Planning to keep it all in house. I’m down to a pair of bare frames and a replacement bottom bracket arrives today. Hopefully it fits and it’s time to strip the frame. Still deciding on a clear plan, but I’ve got access to a big blast cabinet if it all goes sour.
I’ll try to get some pics up later for fun.

Had to sneak out and try the new bottom bracket late last night. Was hoping all would just thread in super smooth, but of course I had not cleaned up the super fine threads enough. Before I destroyed the aluminum threads I sunk my head and stomped back to the house to crack a beer.
Stole a few minutes this morning to give a little clean and got things to thread. I think we have the parts squared away. I’ll just need cables and a cable holding plan?

That is a ridiculously clever idea! Those boxes appear for sale used every now and then. I use sawhorses and very weathered plywood as an outdoor bench. Idea stolen!

Thanks Outlander. The outdoor box is even better than I expected it to be. I use it constantly. Example: needed to cut a filler piece for a window a/c in the kiddos room this morning. Grab the chopsaw and toss it on the box. Done!
Any inside surfaces stay covered, like the bike spread out. The outside box stays clear as it’s outside in the weather.

I would reuse the original clamps. If the chrome isn't badly pitted it will clean up with 0000 steel wool. If it's pitted, have them blasted and Cerokoted.

Oh wow, that does ****. At least you can have them send you swatch books and only pay the $6.50 for shipping. Yeti cup moms ruin everything... I was impressed with the level of support I received from them after I explained that I'm not a pro shop, but have a need for a lot of samples for custom motorcycle builds. I'll still deal with them though since they have both the powders and ceramic coatings as well as custom color matching and matching between their powders and Cerokote.

Snagged this sad Wallyworld bike off the side of the road. It was piled in with the remnants of the garbage that didn’t sell following a yard sale. Really clean, but the chain is kinked and the rear derailleur is bent.
Toss it up on the 134th use of the outside box. Straightened out the chain and helped the derailleur some. It’s still not right and I’m not sure that I can help it.
It’s really sad what absolute garbage these bikes are. We’ve got some cheap beach cruisers rolling around. They are simple and are holding up just fine. You start adding fake front suspensions, fake rear suspensions, 18 speeds, and all the **** to support it, but keep a 100 dollar price point!

Yep, and it's really not worth fixing unless you have a spare rear derailer. I'd try to get it as straight as possible, then give it away to a homeless person or kid who could really use it.

Finally got around to ordering cables. Measured and gave the scrap frame a test drill. I’m liking this internal cable plan. Now to lay out the holes on the keeper frame and drill away.
