Bull, I get the feeling you don't intend on using these future screwdrivers as screwdrivers. :headscrat

Your feeling would be incorrect.

Vince, thanks for the info about the GW and those HF blue handled ones. I like the way the look of the HF pieces.

Just got home from the Wally World Black Friday,Every Man For Himself cage match lol. Just before that 90 year old woman flattened me,(cursing obsinities all the way), In my last few waking moments I looked up,and there they were, the six piece Stanley 100plus screwdriver set for about 8 bucks. I was about to black out just as I saw the words U.S.A. shining brightly on the clear handles of the drivers. Whatta way to die! lol

Monte,

WOW, that's an outright copy for sure! Only $6.99 for a set :shocking:

Bull,

Pardon me if it has been mentioned already, but what about Pratt-Read? They were a major producer of screwdrivers in the US and AFAIK, still produce them on this continent. Member "mrb" here is a distributor.

[EDIT] Whoops, I forgot the point of this thread was to divulge the best of the cheapest screwdrivers.

I picked up a 5 piece set of Craftsman Pro's at Sears a few weeks ago for $17 or $18. I don't know if they can be beat for that price.

that thorsen 20pc set is very appealing when it's listed for 20 and there's a 5 off code.

i think the craftsman drivers that someone pointed out that looked like kleins are made by pratt read. i've seen some pratt reads at ace hardware and they seem like good quality drivers. the pratt read craftsman are designated "pr" vice the "wf" seen on the cheaper ones.

Then I dont see why they are a good deal, no one can vouch for their quality or at least no one has spoken up about it. At least we have people here that actually use the HF stuff

I'm looking for screwdrivers too. With the way I treat them though its hard to spend a lot of course I have never had nice screwdrivers.

I'll probably buy a cheap craftsman set to abuse and a nice set to use.

I wonder how the Matco ones are? They are cheaper than Snap On

Wallyworld has a 6 piece set of Stanley screwdrivers for ~$5. They have the black and yellow handles that look pretty decent. They also had a larger set of "fancier" Stanley screwdrivers- I think it was 16 pieces for ~$20 that looked pretty decent. The fancier set had nicer looking handles.

The cheap set was Made in USA, the fancier set was made in China.

They had another set, Made in Mexico that had handles that felt similar to the standard Cman- but the handles weren't clear like the Cman.

Best cheap, I'd say WIHA. They are the bottom end of the German made stuff.

My acetate handled C-man have worked fine for me for years. Buy them on sale and they're cheap. I also use a set of Stanley "Handyman" with the black and yellow handles I got probably 20 years ago. Last year I opicked up a set of Stanley that have the black rubber over hard handles like the Kleins but I think they are actually slotted and posi drive rather than slotted and Phillips.

These

are popular with the guys at the local Chrysler dealership. No joke.

I've also had good luck with the blue & white handled Kobalts. The ones that look like Pratt-Read.

Only name brand screwdriver that I can say was really lousy was a C-man phillips with a black oxide shaft. The tip ground down after just a few screws so maybe it was just a bad one out of a good batch.

I thought you wanted cheap - $559 is not cheap.

That was a joke, Vance. If I had $500+ burning a hole in my tattered pocket, I would not be blowing it on some lame-*** Porsche screwdriver.

 Bull would have like 450 vintage ratchets coming for that kind of money, can't believe you were snagged on that one Merk.

Who would pay that money for a Porsche screwdriver:headscrat

Oh, really?

Any chance you could post some decent pics that really show the handles, shanks, and tips?

So far, you are the most positive review of any HF driver, so I am counting on you for the details. :)

One thing I forgot to mention is that the writing on the handles comes off with a few wipes of a silicone soaked rag. - yet even my hf drivers get cleaned and coated with silicone.

Sorry about the delay, lost my camera at work :(. Here are the pics of the screwdrivers from HF;

Thanks for getting the pics up. In your first post, you said you beat the heck out of those things. If that's true, then they seem to be holding up quite nicely. I'm interested enough to want to try them.

Now, since you have them side by side, on a scale of 1 to 10, how "similar" are they to the SOs in terms of feel? 1 being about as similar as a whittled stick, 10 being as similar as a clone.

The HF ones are smaller and smoother. The HF ones are more like the "old" hard handles. I'd say about a 3 on your scale compaired to the "newer" hard handles. Virtually identical to the old hard handles.

Yes, the tips have held up really well. 100% better than my USA made (western forge) Huskey screwdrivers.

Don't EVER touch a Snap On screwdriver... you will find it hard to touch anything else ever again.
I worked a lot with snap-on screwdrivers....and you know what? It's easy to find better ones....called Felo or Wiha!
