ricleh,

I am a newbie when it comes to removing gaskets with scrapers. I want to be prepared when the time comes with the necessary scrapers and information.

Would you care to elaborate on the situations when you would use steel, ceramic, and plastic scrapers?

Are ceramic scrapers safer to use on aluminum than steel ones?

Thanks,

Dave

No, you can gouge aluminum just as easily with steel or ceramic. Aircraft maintenance workers use hard plastic scrapers like I mentioned - the Snapon mastic removal kit. Go to this link and read the description.

I did a search for mac scrapers and didn't see it. I'm not sure if it was a Mac that I used, but it had a square piece of carbide about a 1/4" thick at the end of a long handle. Best scraper I've ever used.

Dose anyone know where I can find a scraper like that? I have been looking online for about 2 hours trying to find one and have had no luck.

Search for Super Scraper. It's made by Johnson MFG in Princeton IA.

Yesterday, I received from Amazon the Kyocera CP-12-BK ceramic scraper. I was surprised to see "Made in Japan" on the back of the packaging considering its low price.

Interesting thread. Just this past weekend I was displaced from my 34+ year old KD tool scraper. Thought about this forum after improvising with a piece of scrap metal from an old mulching mower blade. I think I'll actuaully make some now in varying widths based on the model and handle from Ryan's original post. Just saying.

I still miss my old "Mr Gasket Co." steel scraper that disappeared from my roller cabinet.:( Always held an edge, perfect stiffness and didn't rust.

If it's always sharp why would you need a replacable blade?

I think he means it's always razor sharp, because you can put a new razor blade in it. I have to sharpen my old favorite gasket scrapers.

For aluminum I use a razor blade and brake clean. I tried a plastic hotel room card because a friend loves them for that, but if you are patient a razor seems better to me. I hear a new parting tool for a lathe works pretty darned good but I never tried one for that.

It seems like o-rings are the standard today, and creeping corrosion is what you need to remove. A sanding block with fine wet/dry sandpaper covered in oil seems to work well for that.

I really loved using skotch brite rite pads, but that is now considered a no-no.

So most of the stuff that I work on is old and old stuff has the tendency to be stubborn. By stubborn, I mean that often it just doesn't want to come apart. A great examp...

I just bought one of these super scrapers. I'm working on a 76' Honda CB550 top end and a regular razor or cheap $5 scraper won't touch the head gaskets!

Will this super scraper plow through this?
